Reflective Writing
Reflective writing is personal writing in which you look back at what you have learned or experienced, explain how your ideas have changed and why, and decide what you will do next.
Unit 1 : Living Well in a Complex World وفي آخر كل جزء فيه Self-Reflection (صفحة 20)، وفي الـ Summative Assessment (صفحة 36) فيه Reflection Questions زي: «How have your views about lifestyle and well-being changed throughout this unit?».
A good reflection moves through time: Before (what I used to think) → Now (what I have learned and why my view changed) → Next (what I will do).
Analytical
| Analytical paragraph | Reflective writing | |
|---|---|---|
(It can be argued that…) | I / my / me طول الوقت |
| الدليل | من النص (According to the text…)
| الأزمنة | Present simple غالبًا | used to / past simple ← present perfect ← present ← future |
| النهاية | Therefore + الرأي | Reflect and Act: هعمل إيه بعد كده |
Use the book's reflection questions as your plan: 1. Starting point – 2. What I learned (with evidence) – 3. How and why my view changed – 4. Honest doubts or new questions – 5. Action (what I will do).
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Starting point | How have your views… changed? | قول كنت فاكر إيه قبل الوحدة | Before this unit, I used to believe that… |
| 2. What I learned | Which claims were based on solid evidence? | حاجة أو اتنين اتعلمتهم + دليل من النص | The text showed that… / I learned that… |
| 3. How my view changed | How have your views changed? | رأيك دلوقتي وليه اتغير | As a result, I now realise that… |
| 4. Doubts / new questions / culture | What new questions do you now have? How did your cultural background influence you? | اعترف بحاجة لسه مش متأكد منها، أو أثر ثقافتك | I am still not sure whether… / As an Egyptian, … |
| 5. Action (Reflect and Act) | How can you apply what you've learned to your daily life? | خطوة عملية هتعملها | From now on, I intend to… |
لو المهمة سؤال واحد (زي How have your views changed?)
Reflection
Reflective writing uses tenses to show change over time: used to / past simple for the past, present perfect for change up to now, present simple for what you believe now, and will / intend to / be going to for the future.
|---|---|---|
| used to + verb | عادة أو فكرة قديمة خلاص اتغيرت | I used to think that screens were harmless. |
| Past simple | حاجة حصلت خلاص (قريت، سمعت) | The listening made me question perfect photos. |
| Present perfect | تغيير حصل ولسه أثره موجود دلوقتي | My views have changed a lot. |
| Present simple | رأيك أو فهمك دلوقتي | Now I understand that well-being is also mental. |
| will / intend to / be going to | خطتك للمستقبل | I intend to switch off my phone at 10 p.m. |
- I used to believe that a healthy life only meant dieting.used to = «كنت زمان…»
- This unit has made me more careful about what I watch online.has made = present perfect:
- I didn't realise how much sleep teenagers need until I read the text.past simple + until = «
- I now realise that comparison online may affect self-esteem.present simple + hedging (may).
- I am still not sure whether apps should limit screen time.
- From now on, I am going to walk to school twice a week.

Before this unit, I used to believe that a healthy life simply meant eating less sugar and going to the gym. I rarely thought about sleep, and I certainly did not connect my phone with my mood. However, my views have changed in two important ways.
First, I have realised that well-being is both physical and mental. The text explained that exercise releases endorphins, which reduce stress, so a short walk may help my mind as much as my body. Second, the broadcast about the 'highlight-reel effect' made me question the perfect photos which I see online every day. I now understand that many of them are edited and may create unrealistic expectations.
I am still not sure how much responsibility belongs to social media companies and how much belongs to users like me. Honestly, my Egyptian background, in which family gatherings matter a lot, made me value social connection more than some writers did.
From now on, I intend to switch off my phone an hour before bed and spend more evenings with my family.
- Starting point: «Before this unit, I used to believe…»
- الانتقال: «However, my views have changed in two important ways.»
- What I learned + evidence: كل نقطة (First / Second) معاها دليل من الوحدة (endorphins – highlight-reel effect).
- Relative clauses: «endorphins, which reduce stress» و «the perfect photos which I see online».
- Hedging: «may help», «may create».
- Honest doubt + culture: «I am still not sure…» و «my Egyptian background…»
- Inverted commas: 'highlight-reel effect'
- Reflect and Act: آخر جملة خطوة عملية محددة (an hour before bed). مش «I will be healthy» وخلاص.
The text says exercise releases endorphins. Sleep is important. ✓ The text explained that…, so I now realise that…
This unit was very nice and useful. I used to…, but now I…
✓ نوّع: used to – have realised – now understand – intend to.
- ✗ I use to think. ✓ I used to think.
I will be better. ✓ I intend to switch off my phone an hour before bed.
Social media is completely bad. ✓ Social media may affect some teenagers' self-esteem.
(I am still not sure…)
Reflect and Act.
1) Self-Reflection box (أسئلة قصيرة بعد كل جزء) زي: «Which skill do you need more practice with?»
Answer: I need more practice with evaluating arguments. Sometimes I accept a claim because it sounds confident, even when it has no evidence. From now on, I will look for a source before I believe a post.
3) سؤال «evidence or opinion?»: «Which claims in the unit were based on solid evidence, and which were mostly opinion?»
Answer: The claim that teenagers who sleep fewer than seven hours are more likely to report anxiety was based on solid evidence, because it came from published research. In contrast, the post saying that social media 'destroys' confidence seemed to be mostly opinion, since it used absolute language and gave no source.
Unit 1.
