Persuasive and Biased Language: intensifiers, rhetorical questions, absolute language
إزاي تكتشف الكلام المنحاز والأدوات اللي الكاتب بيستخدمها علشان يقنعك: كلمات التقوية، السؤال البلاغي، والكلمات المطلقة.
الدرس ده عن إيه؟
Biased language is language that shows a strong opinion and is not fair or neutral. Writers use persuasive techniques such as intensifiers, rhetorical questions and absolute words to push the reader to agree with them.
الدرس ده عن الكلام اللي بيحاول يقنعك بحاجة، أو بيعرض رأي واحد بس كأنه هو الحقيقة. هنتعلم نكتشف 3 أدوات بيستخدمها الكاتب: intensifiers (كلمات بتقوّي الكلام)، وrhetorical questions (أسئلة مش مستنية إجابة)، وabsolute words (كلمات «كله / دايمًا / أبدًا»).
في الكتاب الدرس ده في Unit 1 : Living Well in a Complex World، Section A: Social Reflection (صفحة 15-19): فيه بوست على السوشيال ميديا لواحد صاحي 5 الصبح وبيجري 10 كيلو، والكتاب بيطلب منك تحلل لغته. وبعدها في جدول Types of persuasive writing techniques & their effects (صفحة 19)، وبييجي عليه أسئلة في Consolidation Review A.
ليه ده مهم؟ لأن الكتاب عايزك تبقى قارئ ذكي: تعرف إمتى الكاتب بيعرض الحقيقة، وإمتى بيضغط عليك بالكلام علشان تصدّق رأيه. وكمان علشان تقدر تستخدم الأدوات دي إنت لما تكتب حاجة إقناعية.
يعني إيه biased؟
A biased writer or speaker supports one side unfairly. They show only the information that helps their opinion and ignore the rest.
كلمة biased معناها «منحاز». زي حكم ماتش بيشجع فريق واحد: بيصفّر لصالحه وبيتجاهل أخطاءه. الكلام المنحاز كده بالظبط: بيوريك ناحية واحدة بس من الصورة.
عكسها neutral يعني «محايد»: بيعرض الحقيقة بهدوء، من غير مبالغة، ومن غير ما يضغط عليك. ودي هتاخدها بالتفصيل في درس Hedging and Neutral Language.
| Biased (منحاز) | Neutral (محايد) | |
|---|---|---|
| الإحساس | قوي، متحمس، أحيانًا غضبان | هادي ومتوازن |
| الكلمات | always, never, everyone, extremely, the worst | some, many, may, might, research suggests |
| بيعرض إيه؟ | ناحية واحدة بس | أكتر من ناحية + دليل |
| مثال | Social media destroys all teenagers' confidence. | Excessive social media use may affect some teenagers' self-esteem. |
خلي بالك: مش كل كلام إقناعي «وحش». الإعلانات والخطب وحملات التوعية بتستخدم الأدوات دي عادي. المهم إنك تاخد بالك منها وتسأل: هل فيه دليل؟ ولا ده مجرد كلام قوي؟
الجدول الأساسي من الكتاب: 3 أدوات + اللغة المحايدة
The book compares three persuasive techniques with neutral language. Each one has a different effect on the reader.
| Technique | يعني إيه؟ | تأثيره على القارئ (effect) | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intensifiers | كلمات بتقوّي الصفة أو الفعل | make ideas stronger — بتخلي الفكرة أقوى وأخطر | very, extremely, really, significantly, incredibly, totally |
| Rhetorical questions | سؤال مش مستني إجابة، إجابته معروفة | make the reader think — بتخليك تفكر وتوافق من غير ما تحس | "Do I really need this?" / "Who wants to live in a polluted world?" |
| Absolute words | كلمات مفيهاش استثناء: 100% | state ideas with full confidence — بتقدّم الكلام كأنه حقيقة مؤكدة | always, every, never, all, nobody, no excuses |
| Hedging words (للمقارنة) | كلمات بتبيّن الحذر وعدم التأكد | show uncertainty or caution — بتخلي الكلام أدق وأعدل | may, might, could, possibly |
| Neutral language (للمقارنة) | لغة متوازنة وموضوعية | balanced, objective and free from bias | Research indicates that… |
الأداة الأولى: Intensifiers (كلمات التقوية)
An intensifier is a word (usually an adverb) that makes an adjective, adverb or verb stronger. It does not add new information. It adds force.
الـ intensifier زي «أوي / جدًا / خالص» في العربي. لما تقول «الأكل حلو» ده عادي، لكن «الأكل حلو جدًا جدًا» إنت بتضغط على الفكرة. الكاتب بيستخدمها علشان يخليك تحس إن الموضوع كبير أو خطير.
| Group | Words | Arabic |
|---|---|---|
| قبل الصفة (adjective) | very, extremely, really, so, incredibly, highly, deeply, seriously | جدًا / للغاية / بجد |
| تقوية كاملة (100%) | totally, completely, absolutely, utterly | تمامًا / خالص / بالكامل |
| مع الأرقام والتغيير | significantly, dramatically, sharply, hugely | بشكل كبير / بشكل رهيب |
| مع الاسم | such a, a real, a complete, a total | ده كارثة حقيقية / فشل تام |
- Screen time has dramatically changed how teenagers sleep.dramatically بتخلي التغيير يبان ضخم ومفاجئ.
- This app is incredibly addictive.incredibly = بشكل لا يُصدّق: بتخوّفك من التطبيق.
- Healthy food is really important for students.really بتأكد وبتقوّي important.
- It was such a waste of time.such a + اسم = تقوية للاسم: «ده كان تضييع وقت فعلًا».
الكلمات دي intensifiers، بس لأنها بتخلي الكلام 100% فهي كمان بتخلي الجملة absolute (مفيهاش استثناء). مثال من الكتاب: «Social media is completely dangerous». في سؤال «Which is an intensifier?» اختار extremely / very / really على طول، ولو لقيت always / never / every دي absolute words مش intensifiers.
الأداة التانية: Rhetorical questions (السؤال البلاغي)
A rhetorical question is a question that does not need an answer. The writer already knows the answer and wants the reader to agree with it.
الـ rhetorical question زي لما مامتك تقولك: «هو أنا هفضل أنادي عليك لحد إمتى؟». هي مش مستنية منك رقم! هي عايزاك تفهم إنك اتأخرت. الكاتب بيعمل نفس الحكاية: بيسألك سؤال إجابته واضحة علشان يشغّل دماغك ويخليك توافق معاه.
| Common forms | Example | الإجابة اللي الكاتب عايزها |
|---|---|---|
| Do we really want…? | Do we really want our children to grow up glued to screens? | No! (لأ طبعًا) |
| Who wouldn't…? / Who doesn't…? | Who wouldn't want to feel calmer and happier? | Everyone would. (كلنا عايزين) |
| Isn't it time…? | Isn't it time we put our phones down at dinner? | Yes, it is. (أيوه، جه الوقت) |
| How can we…? | How can we feel good about ourselves if we compare our lives to filters? | We can't. (مش هينفع) |
| What could be more important than…? | What could be more important than our health? | Nothing. (مفيش أهم) |
التأثير (effect) اللي تكتبه في الإجابة: It makes the reader think / It involves the reader / It suggests that the answer is obvious. يعني: بيخلي القارئ يفكر، بيشركه في الموضوع، وبيوحي إن الإجابة واضحة.
- اسأل نفسك: هل الكاتب مستني معلومة مني؟ لو أيوه = سؤال عادي: What time does the museum open?
- لو الإجابة معروفة ومفروضة (No! / Of course!) = rhetorical question.
- الـ rhetorical question غالبًا تيجي في أول مقال أو بوست (علشان تشدّك) أو في آخره (علشان تسيبك تفكر).
الأداة التالتة: Absolute words (الكلمات المطلقة)
Absolute words leave no room for exceptions. They present an idea as 100% true for everyone, every time. That is why they often make a claim unfair or untrue.
الكلمات المطلقة زي «كل الشباب»، «دايمًا»، «عمر ما حد…». المشكلة إن نادرًا ما يكون فيه حاجة صح 100% على كل الناس. فلما الكاتب يقول «All teenagers believe everything they read online» ده كلام منحاز لأن أكيد فيه مراهقين بيتأكدوا من المعلومة.
| النوع | Absolute words | بالعربي |
|---|---|---|
| ناس / حاجات | all, every, everyone, everybody, nobody, no one, none, nothing | كل / كل الناس / محدش / ولا حاجة |
| وقت | always, never, forever, at all times | دايمًا / أبدًا / على طول |
| تأكيد زيادة | completely, totally, 100%, definitely, certainly, proves | تمامًا / أكيد / بيثبت |
| عبارات | No excuses. / There is only one way. / The best… ever / The worst… ever | مفيش أعذار / مفيش غير طريقة واحدة / أحسن أو أسوأ حاجة في التاريخ |
- Every successful person starts the day with intense exercise.(من بوست الكتاب صفحة 18) every بتعمّم: كأن مفيش ناجح واحد بيصحى متأخر. ده مش حقيقي.
- Health is a choice, always.always = مفيش استثناء. بيتجاهل إن فيه أمراض مش اختيارية.
- Nobody reads books any more.nobody = محدش خالص. مبالغة واضحة.
- Video games are the worst invention ever for young people.the worst… ever = أسوأ حاجة في التاريخ. ده رأي متقدّم كأنه حقيقة، ومفيش أي دليل.
أدوات تانية هتقابلها مع الـ biased language
Biased texts often use other signals too: evaluative adjectives, emotional language, capital letters and urgency.
| Signal | يعني إيه؟ | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Evaluative adjectives | صفات فيها حكم أو رأي (الكتاب ذكر: amazing, toxic, unrealistic) | an amazing smoothie / a toxic habit |
| Emotional language | كلمات بتخوّف أو بتحمّس أو بتزعّل | shocking, terrifying, heartbreaking |
| CAPITAL LETTERS / !!! | كتابة كبيرة وعلامات تعجب علشان «تزعق» في القارئ | There are NO excuses!!! |
| Urgency | ضغط إنك تتصرف دلوقتي | Act NOW before it's too late! |
| Direct address (you) | الكلام موجّه ليك شخصيًا علشان تحس إنه عنك | If you're not living like this, you may feel less successful. |
أمثلة من مواضيع الوحدة
- Everyone knows that exercise is extremely important.everyone = absolute (تعميم) + extremely = intensifier. الجملة منحازة لأنها بتفترض إن الكل متفق.
- Do you really want to spend your whole life staring at a screen?rhetorical question + really = intensifier. الإجابة المفروضة: No.
- Teenagers never think before they post.never = absolute. تعميم ظالم على كل المراهقين.
- This diet will totally transform your body in seven days!totally = intensifier بيخلي الوعد 100% + علامة تعجب = مبالغة.
- Isn't it obvious that filters create unrealistic beauty standards?rhetorical question: «Isn't it obvious» بتقولك إن اللي مش موافق مش شايف الواضح.
- All influencers lie about their lives.all = absolute. أكيد فيه influencers صادقين، فالجملة biased.
- Junk food is a seriously dangerous habit.seriously = intensifier + dangerous = evaluative adjective.
- Why should we pay for a gym when we can walk for free?rhetorical question: الكاتب عايزك تقول «مفيش داعي».
- Sleep is the most important thing in a teenager's life. No excuses.the most important + No excuses = absolute language: مفيش مجال لرأي تاني.
- Some studies suggest that walking may reduce stress.دي مش biased: some + suggest + may = hedging و neutral language. حطيناها علشان تقارن.
إزاي تكتب الـ effect (التأثير) في الإجابة؟
When a question asks about the effect of a technique, name the technique, quote the example, then explain what it does to the reader.
أغلب الطلبة بيعرفوا يطلّعوا المثال، بس بيقفوا عند «effect». استخدم القالب ده وانت مطمّن:
The writer uses [technique] "[example]" to [effect] the reader.
| Technique | Effect phrases (اختار منها) |
|---|---|
| Intensifier | to make the idea sound stronger / more serious / more urgent • to exaggerate the problem • to make the reader feel worried or excited |
| Rhetorical question | to make the reader think • to involve the reader directly • to suggest that the answer is obvious • to make the reader agree with the writer |
| Absolute words | to make the claim sound certain • to leave no room for other opinions • to make the reader feel there are no exceptions (which makes it biased / unfair) |
- The writer uses the intensifier "extremely" to make the problem of screen addiction sound more serious.تقنية + مثال + تأثير. إجابة كاملة.
- The rhetorical question "Do I really need this?" makes the reader think about their shopping habits.مثال الكتاب نفسه: السؤال بيخليك تراجع نفسك.
- The absolute word "every" makes the claim sound certain, but it ignores exceptions, so the post is biased.هنا كمان حكمنا على النص: biased، وده بيدخل في الـ JRE.
- ✗ «never» is an intensifier. ← ✓ «never» is an absolute word. (الـ intensifiers زي very / extremely)
- ✗ «may / might / could» بتقوّي الكلام زي الـ intensifiers. ← ✓ دي hedging words: بتبيّن الحذر وعدم التأكد، عكس الـ absolute.
- ✗ The effect of the rhetorical question is to get an answer. ← ✓ It makes the reader think (مش مستني إجابة).
- ✗ تكتب المثال من غير تأثير. ← ✓ اكتب الاتنين: example + effect، الكتاب بيطلب جدول فيه العمودين.
- ✗ Every persuasive text is biased. ← ✓ مش شرط. الإقناع بدليل وتوازن مش انحياز. الانحياز = ناحية واحدة + مبالغة من غير دليل.
- Intensifier = Increase: بيزوّد القوة (very, extremely).
- Absolute = All or nothing: يا كله يا مفيش (all, never, always).
- Rhetorical question = Reader thinks: القارئ يفكر بس مش بيرد.
- Hedging = Hmm…: كلمة فيها تردد وحذر (may, might).
إزاي بييجي في الأسئلة؟
الأسئلة في الكتاب والمراجعات بتيجي بالشكل ده. خد البوست ده (بوست خيالي للتحليل) وبعدين شوف 3 أنواع أسئلة عليه:
@FitLifeLeila — "I drink a green smoothie EVERY morning and I have never felt better! Honestly, it is the most incredible habit in the world. Why would anyone start the day with anything else? All doctors agree that green food is extremely powerful. If you skip it, you are seriously harming your body. No excuses!"
النوع الأول: MCQ تحديد التقنية
Which persuasive technique is used in "Why would anyone start the day with anything else?" a. Hedging words b. Intensifiers c. Rhetorical questions d. Absolute words
Show answer
c. Rhetorical questions — سؤال مش مستني إجابة. الكاتبة عايزاك تقول «مفيش حاجة أحسن».
النوع التاني: جدول Example + Effect (زي جدول الكتاب صفحة 17)
| Example from the post | Effect on the reader | |
|---|---|---|
| Rhetorical question | "Why would anyone start the day with anything else?" | It makes the reader think the answer is obvious and agree that the smoothie is the best choice. |
| Intensifier | "extremely powerful" / "seriously harming" | It makes the benefits sound bigger and the danger sound more frightening. |
| Absolute words | "EVERY morning", "never", "All doctors", "No excuses" | It makes the claim sound 100% certain and leaves no space for other opinions. |
النوع التالت: JRE — Is the post balanced or biased?
Justify (claim): The post is clearly biased.
Reason: The writer presents one personal habit as the only healthy choice and uses exaggerated language instead of evidence.
Evidence: For example, she claims that "All doctors agree" but she does not name any doctor or study, and she ends with the absolute phrase "No excuses!", which ignores people with different needs.
لاحظ: الـ J هو الحكم (biased)، الـ R هو السبب (ناحية واحدة + مبالغة من غير دليل)، والـ E هو الدليل من النص بين علامتي تنصيص. ده بالظبط اللي الكتاب بيطلبه في سؤال «Is it balanced or biased? Support your judgment with evidence from the text».

15. Find ONE rhetorical question in the post. Why does the writer use it?
Show answer
"why would you destroy your own future?" — The writer uses this rhetorical question: (1) to make the reader think about their own habits, (2) to involve the reader directly (it speaks to "you"), (3) to suggest that the answer is obvious (nobody wants to destroy their future), (4) to make the reader feel guilty or worried about studying late, and (5) to push the reader to agree with the writer's opinion. — أي إجابة من دول صح، والأحسن تكتب 2 أو 3 منهم مع المثال.16. Walking to school is extremely / really / incredibly good for you.21. Rewrite this sentence so it uses absolute language (to see how biased it becomes): "Many teenagers enjoy video games."
Show answer
All teenagers love video games. / Every teenager loves video games. — لاحظ إزاي الجملة بقت تعميم ومنحازة. (خلي بالك: All + جمع + love، لكن Every + مفرد + loves. والتمرين ده علشان تفهم الفرق، مش علشان تكتب كده في المقال)22. Explain in one sentence why "Everyone knows exercise is essential" is biased.
Show answer
Because the absolute word "Everyone" presents an opinion as a fact that all people accept, without giving evidence. — everyone + مفيش دليل.
- Biased = منحاز: ناحية واحدة + كلام قوي من غير دليل. Neutral = محايد ومتوازن.
- Intensifiers (very, extremely, really) = بتقوّي الفكرة.
- Rhetorical questions = سؤال مش مستني إجابة، بيخلي القارئ يفكر ويوافق.
- Absolute words (all, every, always, never, no excuses) = 100% من غير استثناء، وغالبًا بتخلي الكلام غير عادل.
- في الإجابة اكتب دايمًا: technique + example + effect، وفي الحكم استخدم JRE.
