The Lost World · Chapter 1: A Dream of Adventure
(Chapter Summary)
Edward Malone is a young reporter on the Daily Gazette in London. He is twenty-three and full of energy, but he does not know how to start a great life. He asks Gladys Hungerton to marry him. She refuses kindly and says she can only love a brave man who has faced danger.
Her words change Malone. London now feels too safe, so he asks his editor, Mr McArdle, for a dangerous assignment. McArdle tells him to interview Professor Challenger, a famous but very difficult zoologist. Challenger says he has found unknown animals in South America, but he will not give clear details, and he hates reporters.
Malone's friend Tarp Henry warns him not to mention newspapers. So Malone writes a letter and pretends to be a student who admires Challenger's work. Challenger replies angrily but agrees to meet him on Wednesday at eleven. At the house, Mrs Challenger warns Malone that her husband is an impossible person. Then Malone enters the study and meets the huge, frightening professor. The chapter ends with Challenger's rude question.
Professor Challenger.

(Themes & Techniques)
A theme is a big idea in the story. A technique is a method the writer uses to create an effect on the reader.
| Theme / Technique |
| بنحس بحماس Malone وقلقه من جوه: "I felt as if my real life had finally begun." |

Chapter Summative —
Show answer.
1. Answer the following questions.
1. Explain how Gladys's idea of courage changes Malone's plans for his future.
Show answer
Gladys tells Malone that she can only love a man who has done something brave, faced danger and travelled into the unknown. Her words make him feel that his safe life in London is not enough. As a result, he decides to look for a real challenge, and the very next evening he asks his editor for a dangerous assignment. 2. Why does Malone ask Mr McArdle to give him a dangerous assignment?
Show answer
He asks for a dangerous assignment because he wants to prove that he is brave, as Gladys described a brave man. He also feels that London has become too safe and he wants a challenge that will test him and give his life a clearer purpose. He tells McArdle that he wants "a real story". 3. Explain why Malone writes to Professor Challenger as if he understands Challenger's scientific work.
Show answer
Challenger hates journalists and often throws them out of his house. Tarp Henry warns Malone not to mention newspapers. So Malone copies a difficult sentence from Challenger's latest paper and pretends to be a student who admires his work. This is the only way he can get an appointment and enter Challenger's study. 4. Analyze what Mr McArdle's reaction to Malone's request reveals about Malone's attitude to danger.
Show answer
McArdle is surprised and says, "Most sensible people want to avoid it." His reaction shows that Malone's attitude to danger is unusual. Malone does not fear danger. He actually looks for it, because he sees it as a way to prove his courage. However, McArdle's words also suggest that Malone may be a little impulsive and not thinking carefully about the risks. 5. How do Mrs Challenger's warning and Challenger's first appearance build suspense at the end of the chapter?
Show answer
Mrs Challenger lowers her voice and warns Malone that her husband is "a perfectly impossible person" and that he should not argue too long. This makes the reader expect trouble. Then a deep voice roars from behind a closed door, and Challenger appears as a huge, broad man with a black beard and sharp eyes that seem to measure Malone's weaknesses. His rude first question leaves the reader nervous and eager to know what will happen in the interview. 6. Evaluate Malone's decision to use deception in order to get an interview with Challenger. Was his method acceptable? Give reasons.
Show answer
In my opinion, his method was not fully acceptable, although it is understandable. On the one hand, Challenger refused to speak to any reporter, so deception seemed to be the only way to reach him and find the truth about an important scientific claim. On the other hand, Malone lied about who he was and pretended to understand science he "barely understood". This was dishonest and risky, because Challenger could discover the trick at once, as Tarp Henry warned. 7. Evaluate Malone's desire for adventure at this stage. Does it show maturity, impulsiveness, or both? Explain.
Show answer
I think it shows both. It shows some maturity because Malone wants a life with "a clearer purpose" and he is ready to work hard for a difficult story. However, it is also impulsive. He decides to look for danger the day after Gladys refuses him, and he chooses a risky trick without thinking much about the results. At this stage his courage is real, but it is not yet guided by experience.
2. JRE (Justify, Reasoning & Evidence) —
Yes / No / To some extent + الفكرة. |
Justify: Yes, I believe that Gladys is a positive influence on Malone at the beginning of the story.
Reasoning: Her words push Malone out of his comfortable life. Before her answer, he has energy but no direction. After she explains her idea of courage, he starts to act. She also teaches him that true courage is not a show to impress other people, and this gives him a better reason to be brave.
Evidence: First, she tells him, "I love a man who has done something brave," and the very next evening he asks McArdle for a dangerous assignment. Second, she says a brave man acts "because courage is part of his character", not to impress someone. Malone leaves her house "strangely excited" and feels that London is "too safe".
(Yes … positive influence).
Justify: Not completely. Malone is brave and determined, but he is not yet fully ready for real adventure.
Reasoning: Being ready needs more than enthusiasm. It also needs knowledge, careful planning and the ability to face problems honestly. Malone has a lot of courage and energy, but his actions show that he depends on luck and tricks rather than skill.
Evidence: With McArdle, he asks for danger so quickly that his editor reminds him that "most sensible people want to avoid it". With Tarp Henry, he plans to trick Challenger using a sentence he "barely understood", and Henry warns him that he is "taking a risk". Finally, when he faces Challenger, the professor immediately mocks him as a young man who cannot understand "plain science".
- Justify: «Not completely» =
Malone.
Challenger.
Gladys refuses Malone because she loves another man.
- غلط: McArdle is a scientist. Challenger.
Malone tells Challenger that he is a reporter in his letter.
Tarp Henry works for the Daily Gazette.

Show answer
False — "he would not reveal the exact place" and he refused to give clear details.7. True or False? Justify: Malone feels nervous and afraid before the appointment.
Show answer
False — "I should have been nervous. Instead, I felt as if my real life had finally begun."8. Who said it? "Find out which." What does it mean?
Show answer
Mr McArdle — he wants Malone to find out whether Challenger is mistaken or lying. 9. Who did it? This person warned Malone in a low voice not to argue too long with Challenger.
Show answer
Mrs Challenger — she said her husband is "a perfectly impossible person".10. Explain why Malone's letter is described as a risk.
Show answer
Because Malone does not understand the science. He only copied one complicated sentence, so Challenger might realise at once that he knows nothing about the subject.
Challenger.
Challenger (suspense).
