Opinion Article
An opinion article gives your view on a topic and supports it with reasons. It is usually written for a magazine, a newspaper or a website, so it has a catchy headline and speaks to many readers.
Unit 4: The Power of Choice (Concept 4: Consumption and Choice)، صفحة Writing — Opinion Article (صفحة 116)، والمهمة فيها: مقال (150-180) words لمجلة المدرسة عن الـ brand culture.
An opinion paragraph is one block of writing. An opinion article is longer and has six parts: a headline, an introduction, two body paragraphs, a concession and a conclusion.
| Opinion paragraph | Opinion article | |
|---|---|---|
The book's Writing Guide gives six parts. Each part has one job.
| الجزء | What to include (English) | يعني إيه بالعربي | عبارات مفيدة |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Headline | a short, catchy title that shows your opinion | عنوان قصير وجذاب، يبيّن رأيك من أوله | Black Friday: A Bargain That Costs Us More |
| 2. Introduction | give the topic and state your main opinion clearly | قدّم الموضوع في جملة أو اتنين، وبعدين قول رأيك بوضوح | The issue of … affects many young people today. / In this article, I will argue that … / In my opinion, … |
| 3. Body paragraph 1 | first reason + example or evidence | السبب الأول + مثال أو دليل | First of all, … / For example, … / As a result, … |
| 4. Body paragraph 2 | second reason + example or evidence | السبب التاني + مثال أو دليل | Furthermore, … / In addition, … / Research has shown that … |
| 5. Concession | mention one point from the other side | اذكر نقطة واحدة من الرأي التاني، ورد عليها | Admittedly, … However, … / On the other hand, some people argue that … However, … |
| 6. Conclusion | restate your opinion and end with a strong final sentence | كرّر رأيك بكلام تاني، واقفل بجملة قوية تفضل في دماغ القارئ | In conclusion, … / To sum up, … / Next time you …, ask yourself … |

Unit 4 teaches three language points that you should use in your article: linking words, the present perfect and fronting.
|---|---|---|
| Linking words (أدوات ربط) | بتربط الأفكار وتخلي المقال مترتب | Furthermore, cheap clothes are thrown away quickly. |
| Present perfect (have/has + p.p.) | بتتكلم عن حاجة حصلت ولسه أثرها موجود دلوقتي، أو تجربة شخصية | Food waste has become a serious problem in recent years. |
| Fronting (تقديم جزء من الجملة) | بتقدّم عبارة (وقت / نتيجة / مقارنة) لأول الجملة علشان تأكيد وأسلوب رسمي | As a result of clever adverts, many teenagers buy things they do not need. |
- Unlike careful shoppers, impulse buyers rarely check the price.
- In Egyptian schools, a lot of bread ends up in the bin. A lot of bread ends up in the bin in Egyptian schools.
- Many teenagers have spent more on brands than on books this year.Present perfect: this year
- Since I deleted the shopping app, I have saved a lot of money.
- Brands sell feelings, not just products. As a result, we pay more for a logo.As a result =
- Although sales seem attractive, they often encourage unnecessary spending.
؟ لو السؤال «How much do you agree?»
ينفع سؤال (Are We…?) (Stop …, Start …).
(As a result …).
(Model Answer)
Black Friday: A Bargain That Costs Us More
Every November, shops and apps fill with signs promising huge discounts, and young people rush to buy. In my opinion, however, events like Black Friday do far more harm than good, because they push us to buy things we do not need.
First of all, sales create a false sense of urgency. Countdown clocks and messages such as ‘Only two left!’ make shoppers panic. As a result, many teenagers buy without thinking. My cousin bought three hoodies last year, and she has worn only one.
Furthermore, these events encourage waste. Cheap clothes are soon thrown away, which harms the planet. Unlike careful shopping, impulse buying fills our wardrobes and empties our pockets.
Admittedly, sales can help families buy expensive items, such as a laptop, for less. However, this is only true when the purchase is planned.
To sum up, Black Friday is not about saving. It is a trick to make us spend. Next time you see a ‘50% off’ sign, ask yourself one question: do I really need this?
Black Friday.
In my opinion, … do far more harm than good.
- Body 1: بيبدأ بـ First of all + السبب (false sense of urgency) + مثال (countdown clocks و‘Only two left!’) + نتيجة بـ As a result + مثال شخصي فيه present perfect: she has worn only one.
Unlike careful shopping, …
- Concession: Admittedly = «لازم أعترف إن».
- علامات الترقيم: الـ inverted commas حوالين ‘Only two left!’ والـ colon قبل do I really need this?
| # | Writing Checklist |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | I write a short, catchy title that shows my opinion. | |
| 2 | I state my main opinion in the introduction. | |
| 3 | I support it with an example or evidence. | |
| 4 | I give a second reason with an example. | |
| 5 | I mention one point from the other side. | |
| 6 | I restate my opinion. |
(First of all / Furthermore / However / As a result)؟
- مفيش اختصارات زي don't / can't؟ (اكتب do not / cannot علشان الأسلوب رسمي).
- ✗ عنوان طويل أو من غير رأي: «An Article About Brands» ← ✓ «The Real Price of a Logo» (قصير وفيه رأي).
- ✗ تقف مع الرأيين: «Brands are good and bad.»
Brands harm us» ← «A logo should not decide how we feel about ourselves.»
- ✗ سبب من غير مثال: «Brands are bad because they are bad.»
Guys, brands are sooo bad!!» ← ✓ «Many young people are influenced by brands more than they realise.»
- ✗ فاصلة قبل However بين جملتين كاملتين: «… a lower price, however, it …» However, …»
First of all → Furthermore → Admittedly … However → To sum up.
1) Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d.
Which sentence is the best concession for an article against long screen time?
a. To sum up, screens are harmful.
b. Admittedly, some apps help students learn. However, most teenagers use their phones for entertainment, not study.
c. First of all, screens damage our sleep.
d. Stop Scrolling, Start Living
2) Writing task with a plan.
‘Modern consumption is making people less happy, not more.’ How much do you agree? Write an opinion article of (150-180) words.
