Media Literacy: fact, opinion, bias and greenwashing
Media literacy is the ability to read media texts (posts, adverts, articles, videos) critically: to separate facts from opinions, to spot bias, and to judge whether a source is reliable before believing or sharing it.
Unit 1 («distinguish between a fact, an opinion, and a biased claim in a social media post or article» + بوست الـ 5 الصبح صفحة 18)، وUnit 3 (بوست «Dendera lightbulb» وجدول Reliability and Language صفحة 92 + Presentation Task كـ young fact-checker)، وUnit 6 (بوست أسماك القرش صفحة 24)، وUnit 10: Behind the Buy (مقال الـ fast fashion وكلمة greenwashing صفحة 141 + بوست TrendVibe صفحة 144-145). Consolidation Review E.
A fact can be checked and proved true or false. An opinion is what someone thinks or feels. A biased claim is an opinion presented as if it were a fact, usually one-sided and without evidence.
| Fact (حقيقة) | Opinion (رأي) | Biased claim (ادعاء منحاز) | |
|---|---|---|---|
I think, in my view, best, beautiful, should | always, all, everyone, proves, the truth, NO excuses |
| Example | The GEM is near the Giza pyramids. | The GEM is the most beautiful museum I have visited. | Everyone agrees the GEM is the only museum worth visiting. |
- لو فيها كلمة حكم (best, terrible, amazing, should) = opinion.
- خلي بالك: جملة واحدة ممكن يكون فيها fact + opinion: «The museum, which opened in 2025, is wonderful.»
- Fast fashion items are often discarded after only a few wears.Fact (claim
- Second-hand clothes are more stylish than new ones.Opinion — stylish =
- All fashion brands are liars who destroy the planet.Biased claim — all + liars + destroy +
- Growing cotton for one T-shirt can need over two and a half thousand litres of water.
- I think schools should teach media literacy.Opinion — I think + should.
- Experts CONFIRM our rivers will have NO fish left by next year!
The book uses a reliability table to analyse posts. Learn each feature, what to look for, and a typical example.
| Feature | What to look for | بالعربي | Typical example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emotional language | words designed to provoke, excite or alarm | كلمات بتخوّف أو بتحمّس | SHOCKING, COLLAPSING, MIND-BLOWING, guilt-free |
| Absolute language | claims with no qualification or evidence | كلام 100% من غير دليل | 100% SUSTAINABLE, every fishing boat, PROVE |
| Urgency signals | language creating panic, secrecy or pressure to act now | ضغط إنك تتصرف دلوقتي | Share before this gets deleted! Shop NOW, limited stock |
| Selective evidence | using only part of the image / information | جزء من الحقيقة بس | one carved picture used as "proof" |
| Conspiracy framing | suggesting hidden or suppressed truth | «فيه حد بيخبّي عليك الحقيقة» | Modern science is hiding the truth! |
| Missing information | no named source, study or specific data | مفيش مصدر ولا أرقام | "Scientists confirm" with no names |
| Oversimplification | a complex issue reduced to one villain or one cause | مشكلة كبيرة متلخصة في سبب واحد | Blaming every fishing boat equally |
| Contradiction | a claim that conflicts with the brand's own behaviour | الكلام عكس الفعل | "sustainable" + "new drop every week" |
الإجابة: emotional language, missing evidence and misleading claims مش عدد اللايكات.
Greenwashing is the practice of making a product or company appear more environmentally friendly than it really is. (This is the definition in Unit 10.)
| Example |
|---|---|---|
| Small green part, big normal business | حاجة صغيرة خضرا بتغطي على الباقي | one recycled-bottle jacket in a collection of thousands |
| Missing information | مفيش كلام عن المواد أو العمال أو المية | no mention of factories, wages or water use |
| Contradiction | الكلام عكس الفعل | "sustainable" + a new collection every week |
- What exactly?
- How much?
- Who checked it?
- What is missing?
- Does it match the behaviour?
Share
Before believing or sharing a post, follow these steps.
- Check the source:
- Ask who benefits:
@LeafLineWear (1.8M followers) — "Our NEW Earth Collection is 100% ECO-FRIENDLY! Made with love for nature. Every piece saves the planet. Hurry — only 48 hours left, new styles every Monday! #GreenLiving #GuiltFree" (310,000 likes · 52,000 reposts)
| Feature | Example from the post | Why it is unreliable |
|---|---|---|
| Emotional language | "Made with love for nature", "#GuiltFree" | It makes buyers feel good instead of giving information. |
| Absolute language | "100% ECO-FRIENDLY", "Every piece saves the planet" | No product is 100% harmless, and there is no evidence. |
| Urgency signals | "Hurry — only 48 hours left" | It pushes people to buy before they think. |
| Missing information | no materials, factories, wages or water use | Readers cannot check the claim. |
| Contradiction | "eco-friendly" + "new styles every Monday" | Producing new clothes every week creates more waste. |
الحكم بالـ JRE:
J: The post is unreliable and is a clear example of greenwashing.
R: It uses vague green words and emotional language to make the brand look responsible, but it gives no details that can be checked.
E: For instance, it claims to be "100% ECO-FRIENDLY" while also promising "new styles every Monday", which contradicts the idea of sustainability.
Model: بوست للـ media club (Fact-checker)
Is "100% Eco-Friendly" Too Good to Be True?
This week, a viral post from a clothing brand called LeafLine reached over 300,000 likes. It claims that its new collection is "100% eco-friendly" and that "every piece saves the planet". However, the post gives no details about materials, factory conditions or water use. It also uses urgency signals such as "only 48 hours left" to push followers to buy quickly. Most importantly, it promises new styles every Monday, which contradicts its green message.
Admittedly, a few brands are taking real steps, such as using recycled fabric or repairing old clothes. Nevertheless, many others rely on vague green words to look responsible while their business stays the same. This practice is called greenwashing, and it makes it harder for shoppers to recognise brands that are really trying to change.
So, before you believe a sustainability claim, ask three questions. What exactly is sustainable? Who has checked it? Does the brand's behaviour match its words? A claim that cannot answer these questions probably deserves your doubt, not your money.

- Concede: Admittedly, … Nevertheless, …
- ✗ Greenwashing = recycling. ← ✓ greenwashing =
- ✗ تكتب «the post is fake» وخلاص.

D. Read the short text, then answer.
FreshThreads has launched a 'Planet First' line made from recycled cotton. The line makes up about 2% of the clothes the company sells. The company releases around 400 new designs every month and has not published information about its factory wages.

Although using recycled cotton is a positive step, the 'Planet First' line is too small to make FreshThreads a responsible company. — concession + حكم.22. Write a neutral, hedged sentence about FreshThreads that a fact-checker could publish.
Show answer
The available information suggests that FreshThreads' green line may represent only a small part of its overall production. — suggests + may + مفيش مبالغة.
E. Writing task
23. You are a fact-checker for your school media club. Write a post (about 150-180 words) about ONE viral post that warns of an environmental disaster. Accept that some environmental problems really are serious, then show readers how to check such a post before they share it.
Show answer
→ Concede: Although some environmental problems are truly serious, exaggerated posts can make people stop trusting real scientists. → How to check: Stop – Source – Evidence – Compare – Who benefits. → Closing + 2-3 hashtags.
- جدول الـ reliability: emotional language, absolute language, urgency signals, selective evidence, conspiracy framing, missing information, oversimplification, contradiction.
قبل الـ share: Stop – Source – Evidence – Compare – Who benefits.
Although / Admittedly.
