The Present Perfect (since, for, just, already, yet, ever, never)
إزاي تستخدم have / has + V3 علشان تربط الماضي بالحاضر، ومعاه since / for / just / already / yet / ever / never، والفرق بينه وبين الماضي البسيط.
We use the present perfect (have / has + past participle) to talk about something that started or happened in the past and is still important now. It connects the past to the present, because we care about the result, not the exact time.
Unit 4: The Power of Choice، Lesson 4.4 (عن الـ sales والـ Black Friday)، جزء Grammar Focus وGrammar in Context (صفحة 126-128)، ومعاه Writing Task: اكتب 5 جمل عن الـ sales culture بالـ present perfect، وبيرجع في Consolidation Review B. الكتاب بيقول إنه منتشر جدًا في التقارير والمقالات والكتابة الأكاديمية، وبيركز على الكلمات دي: since, for, just, already, yet, never, ever.
Past simple = a finished action at a finished time (yesterday, in 2010). Present perfect = a past action with a present result, or a situation that is still true — the time is not finished or not important.
- I lost my wallet yesterday.Past simple:
- I have lost my wallet.Present perfect:
Food waste has become a serious problem. |
| 2. لسه مستمر (since / for) | بدأ في الماضي ولسه بيحصل لحد دلوقتي | Egypt has faced this issue for many years. |
(مش مهم إمتى) | Have you ever fallen for a loss aversion trick? |
| 4. حاجة حصلت حالًا أو مستنيينها (just / already / yet) | حصلت من شوية / حصلت بدري عن المتوقع / لسه ما حصلتش | Scientists have just published new research. |
(Form)
have / has + past participle (V3). Use has with he / she / it and singular nouns, have with I / you / we / they and plural nouns.
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative (مثبت) | subject + have / has + V3 | Supermarkets have reduced their prices. |
| Negative (نفي) | subject + haven't / hasn't + V3 | Supermarkets haven't changed their habits yet. |
| Question (سؤال) | Have / Has + subject + V3 …? | Has Egypt introduced food waste laws? |
| Short answers | Yes, I have. / No, she hasn't. | Have you ever bought something you didn't need? — Yes, I have. |
| Contractions (اختصار) | I've / we've / they've / he's / she's / it's | She's spent all her money. (she's هنا = she has) |
- الأفعال العادية (regular): نزوّد -ed زي التاني بالظبط: use ← used، waste ← wasted، introduce ← introduced، stop ← stopped، study ← studied.
- الأفعال الشاذة (irregular) لازم تتحفظ: buy ← bought، spend ← spent، find ← found، become ← become، fall ← fallen، see ← seen، go ← gone، eat ← eaten، throw ← thrown، give ← given، take ← taken، write ← written، be ← been.
he's ممكن تكون he is أو he has. لو بعدها V3 يبقى has: He's bought = He has bought. لو بعدها -ing أو صفة يبقى is: He's buying / He's happy.
الكلمات اللي بتيجي معاه: since, for, just, already, yet, ever, never
These time markers go in fixed positions. just / already / ever / never go between have and the V3. yet goes at the end. since / for usually go at the end.
V3 | Scientists have just published new research on food waste. |
| already | خلاص / بالفعل (بدري عن المتوقع) | بين have و V3 (في المثبت) | Some schools have already started teaching food literacy. |
(في السؤال) | آخر الجملة، في النفي والسؤال بس | The government hasn't acted on this problem yet. / Have you paid yet? |
| ever | قبل كده؟ / في أي وقت (في حياتك) | بين subject و V3 في السؤال | Have you ever bought something just because it was on sale? |
| never | عمري ما… | This topic has never received enough attention. |
| since | من ساعة / منذ + نقطة بداية | قبل الوقت، غالبًا في الآخر | Food waste has been a problem since the 1990s. |
| for | لمدة + مدة زمنية | قبل المدة، غالبًا في الآخر | Egypt has faced this issue for many years. |
since ولا for؟
since + a point in time (when it started). for + a period of time (how long).
| since + نقطة بداية | for + مدة |
|---|---|
| since 2020 | for six years |
| since last Black Friday | for a long time |
| since January | for three months |
| since I was a child | for ages |
| since the 1990s | for decades |
| since this morning | for two hours |
← since. ← for.
- لو بعدها رقم + وحدة زمن (two hours, ten years) ← غالبًا for.
I have saved money since I started my budget.
How long have you used this app? — For two years. / Since 2024.
If the sentence has a finished time (yesterday, last week, in 2019, two days ago, when I was ten), use the past simple, not the present perfect.
| Past simple | Present perfect |
|---|---|
| وقت خلص ومحدد: yesterday, last year, in 2019, ago, when… | وقت مش محدد أو لسه مخلصش: ever, never, just, already, yet, since, for, so far, recently, this week, today |
| I bought a jacket last Friday. | I have bought a jacket.
| Prices rose in 2023. | Prices have risen since 2023. |
| She didn't buy anything yesterday. | She hasn't bought anything this week.
| When did you start using the app? | How long have you used the app? |
- ✗ I have bought these shoes two days ago. ← ✓ I bought these shoes two days ago.ago =
- ✓ I have bought these shoes, and I wore them yesterday.
She has bought a jacket during the sale: ده صح لأن الـ sale لسه شغال (الفترة مخلصتش). لو الـ sale خلص وبنحكي عنه كحكاية، نقول: She bought a jacket during last week's sale.
been ولا gone؟
has gone to = went and is still there. has been to = went and came back (experience).
- Ahmed has gone to the mall.
- Ahmed has been to the mall three times this month.
- Have you ever been to a Black Friday sale? (been مع ever).

- This topic has never received enough attention.
In reports and opinion articles, the present perfect presents recent findings and changes that matter now: Studies have shown…, Prices have risen…, Consumers have become…
Justify: Sales events do not really help consumers save money. Reason: Shops have designed clever tricks such as countdown clocks and 'Only 3 left!' signs. Evidence: Research has found that people who shop during sales spend more overall. In Egypt, many young people have started buying online because apps have made shopping faster than ever.
لاحظ: has found / have designed / have started بيقولوا إن الكلام ده حصل ولسه ليه أثر النهارده.

- ✗ I have lived here since five years. ← ✓ for five years.
- ✗ I have seen that advert yesterday. ← ✓ I saw that advert yesterday.
- دوّر على الكلمة الدليل: since / for / just / already / yet / ever / never / recently / so far ← present perfect.
- لو لقيت yesterday / ago / last / in + سنة فاتت ← past simple.
