Modal Verbs (could, should, may, must)
إزاي تستخدم can / could / should / may / must علشان تقدّم الحقائق بحذر وتقيّم الأدلة وتدّي نصايح وتوصيات.
Modal verbs (can, could, should, ought to, may, might, must) are special helping verbs. We use them to present facts carefully, to evaluate evidence and to make recommendations.
Grammar Focus: Modal verbs to present facts carefully and evaluate evidence (Avoid stating everything as absolute fact).
Modals show how sure we are, or how strong our advice is. Compare: *Solar energy* solves *the problem* (100% fact) and *Solar energy* may solve *the problem* (possible, not certain).
- Battery storage solves the problem of intermittency.
- Battery storage may solve the problem of intermittency.
Modals
Modals never change their form: no -s, no -ed, no -ing. After a modal we use the base verb (infinitive without *to*). To make the negative add not. To make a question move the modal before the subject.
|---|---|---|
| بعد الـ modal الفعل مصدر من غير to | Solar energy could power cities. | could to power / could powers / could powering |
| الـ modal مبياخدش s مع he / she / it | The government must act. | The government musts act. |
| النفي = not بعد الـ modal | We should not (shouldn't) waste energy. | We don't should waste energy. |
| السؤال = الـ modal قبل الفاعل | Can wind farms power a whole region? | Do wind farms can power…? |
| ought to هي الوحيدة اللي فيها to | Schools ought to recycle. | Schools ought recycle. |
The book groups modals by function: possibility or potential, recommendations, uncertainty, and strong necessity.
|---|---|---|---|
| can | قدرة أو إمكانية مؤكدة (ability / capacity) | يقدر / يستطيع | Wind farms can generate electricity for entire regions. |
| could | إمكانية في المستقبل (potential)، أو قدرة في الماضي | ممكن / ممكن يقدر | Solar energy could power entire cities by 2050. |
| should / ought to | نصيحة أو توصية (recommendation) | المفروض / ينبغي | Households should switch to renewable energy. |
| may | احتمال، كلام حذر (hedge) | يمكن / من الجايز | Battery technology may solve intermittency. |
| might | احتمال أضعف من may | ممكن (بس احتمال ضعيف) | Some projects might fail without investment. |
| must | ضرورة قوية أو حاجة مستعجلة (necessity / urgency) | لازم / يجب | Governments must invest in clean energy now. |
رتّبهم كده من الأضعف للأقوى في الاحتمال: might ← may / could ← can ← (فعل عادي = حقيقة). وفي الإلزام: should / ought to (نصيحة) ← must (لازم).
- Egypt can produce huge amounts of solar power because it is sunny most of the year.
- Electric buses could reduce air pollution in Cairo.
- Experts believe electric cars may become the global standard within a decade.
- Rising seas might affect some villages in the Delta.
- Schools should consider installing solar panels on their roofs.
- Young people ought to turn off lights when they leave a room. نفس معنى should.
- We must act now to protect future generations.
- Factories must not dump waste into the Nile.
- Solar panels cannot produce electricity at night, so we need batteries to store energy.
- Should governments ban plastic bags? should قبل الفاعل.
Some pairs look similar but mean different things: must not vs do not have to, can vs could, may vs must (for deduction).
|---|---|---|
| must not (mustn't) | ممنوع | You mustn't burn rubbish in the street. |
| don't have to | مش لازم (براحتك) | You don't have to buy new solar panels. You can rent them. |
| must (التزام من المتكلم نفسه) | لازم (أنا شايف كده) | We must save water. |
| have to | لازم (قانون أو ظرف من برّه) | Factories have to follow environmental laws. |
| must (استنتاج) | أكيد (متأكد من دليل) | The air is grey. There must be a lot of pollution. |
| can't (استنتاج) | مستحيل يكون | That can't be true. Solar power is getting cheaper, not more expensive. |
- We should have planted more trees years ago.
- The floods could have been worse.
- The ice may have melted because of the heat wave.
Argument
In a leaflet, use should / can for friendly advice and must for urgent calls to action. In an argument, use may / could to hedge claims and evaluate evidence carefully.
(You should… / You can start small…) وفي الـ call to action ممكن must للتأكيد.
- تقييم الأدلة والـ JRE: بدل ما تقول «solar is the best» قول «solar may be the most important source at the moment» علشان تبقى دقيق ومتوازن.
The sun shines on Egypt almost every day. Why not use it? Solar panels can turn sunlight into electricity for your home. Extra energy may even be sold back to the grid. You should talk to your parents or your school about rooftop panels. If you are not ready for that, you could start small with a solar charger. The climate crisis is your generation's challenge, so we must act today!
لاحظ: can = قدرة مؤكدة، may = احتمال، should = نصيحة، could = اقتراح خيار، must = حاجة مستعجلة.
- ✗ Solar energy could to power cities. ← ✓ Solar energy could power cities.
- ✗ The government musts act. ← ✓ The government must act.
- ✗ Wind farms can generates electricity. ← ✓ Wind farms can generate electricity.
- ✗ We don't should waste water. ← ✓ We shouldn't waste water.
- ✗ Do we can stop climate change? ← ✓ Can we stop climate change?
- ✗ You mustn't buy new panels ← ✓ You don't have to buy new panels.
- ✗ Schools ought install panels. ← ✓ Schools ought to install panels.
- الكتاب بيحط المعنى بين قوسين: (ability) = can، (possibility) = may / could / might، (advice/recommendation) = should، (necessity) = must.
- لو الجملة فيها «although this is not certain» أو «but more research is needed» يبقى احتمال: may / might / could.
- لو فيها now / urgently / immediately غالبًا must.

Planting trees in cities ______ (possibility) lower summer temperatures, although results differ from place to place.
الإجابة: may / could.
2) Only one sentence in each group is grammatically correct. Choose the correct answer.

3) Rewrite the sentence more carefully using a modal verb. (hedging)
Solar energy is the answer to all of Egypt's energy problems.
Solar energy could / may be an important answer to many of Egypt's energy problems.
