Narrative Techniques: simile, contrast and personal voice
Why does the author use…?
Narrative techniques are the tools a writer uses to make a story vivid and personal. In Unit 2 the book asks you to use three of them in your diary entry: a simile, contrast and personal voice.
في Unit 2 (بعد القطعة الأدبية «Not Exactly a Relaxing Day») الكتاب بيطلب منك في Diary Entry Checklist تستخدم: a simile, contrast, personal voice ومعاهم narrative tenses وكلمات الدرس وreflection.
وأهم حاجة: إزاي تجاوب سؤال «Why does the author use ___?».
(Simile)
A simile compares two different things using like, as … as or as if / as though. It helps the reader imagine something clearly.
الـ simile يعني تشبيه: بنقارن حاجتين مختلفين باستخدام كلمة like (زي) أو as … as (… أو as if / as though (كأن).
|---|---|---|
| like + noun | زي | tiredness like warm sand |
| as + adjective + as | … | The road was as hot as an oven. |
| as if / as though + clause | كأن | He cycled as if nothing had happened. |
- "a deep, physical tiredness that sat in my legs and shoulders like warm sand"شبّه التعب بـ رملة دافية: تقيلة، قاعدة في جسمه، بس دافية ومريحة شوية.
- "continued cycling as if the heat were simply decoration"صاحبه سايق كأن الحر ده مجرد ديكور، يعني مش فارق معاه خالص.
- "as if … the distance were a minor detail"كأن المسافة حاجة صغيرة مش مهمة.
- After the match, my legs felt like jelly.
- The pool was as calm as glass in the early morning.
- I stared at my phone as if it were a magnet.
- The final kilometre stretched in front of me like a never-ending ribbon.
- Her paintbrush moved across the canvas like a dancer.
- ✗ I like cycling. ←
- ✗ He looks like his brother.
- ✓ He ran like the wind.
- الـ metaphor (استعارة) من غير like/as: «My legs were lead.»
- helps the reader picture / imagine the scene or feeling clearly — يخلي القارئ يتخيل.
- makes the description vivid and more interesting — يخلي الوصف حي.
- explains an abstract feeling (like tiredness) through something concrete we know — يوضح إحساس صعب بحاجة نعرفها.
- emphasises a quality (how heavy, how easy, how hot) — يأكد صفة.
- shows the narrator's feelings or attitude — يبين مشاعر الراوي.
- creates a mood (calm, tense, humorous) — يعمل جو معين.
- can add humour — ممكن يضحّك (زي «the heat were simply decoration»).
(Contrast)
Contrast means putting two opposite things next to each other: before and after, easy and hard, calm and tense. It makes the difference stand out and shows change.
كلمات بتدل عليه: but, however, while, whereas, then, instead, although, at first … by the end.
- Home vs the Nile trip: "complete stillness" on the sofa ↔ cycling for hours in the sun.
- The sun: "gentle and golden at dawn" ↔ "stronger and more direct".
- The friend vs the narrator: the friend cycles easily ↔ "I struggled to keep up."
- The ending: "exhausted" ↔ "strangely satisfied".
- Before vs after: leisure = doing nothing ↔ leisure can come "from effort".
- At first, I spent my evenings scrolling. By the end of the month, I was painting every night.
- While my brother found chess boring, I found it exciting.
- The gym was noisy and crowded, whereas the park was silent and empty.
- I expected a lazy afternoon. Instead, I climbed a mountain.
- highlights the difference between two things — يبرز الفرق.
- shows a change in the narrator's feelings or ideas — يبين التغيير.
- makes the message clearer (comfort vs challenge) — يوضح الرسالة.
- makes the reader compare and think — يخلي القارئ يقارن ويفكر.
- can show irony (what we expect vs what happens) — يبين المفارقة.
(Personal Voice)
Personal voice is the writer's own way of speaking to the reader. It uses the first person (I, me, my), honest feelings, private thoughts, questions to oneself and a natural, sometimes humorous style.
الكتاب في Unit 8 كمان بيقول: «Use the first person (I, my, me) to share your thoughts and experiences.»
|---|---|---|
| first person | ضمير المتكلم | "My idea of leisure was simple" |
| honest confession | اعتراف بصراحة | "I seriously considered giving up" |
| thinking aloud / possibilities | بيفكر بصوت عالي | "Perhaps it was pride … Or perhaps …" |
| humour about himself | بيضحك على نفسه | "laughed at my complaints" |
| private feelings | مشاعر داخلية | "I was genuinely curious whether I could finish" |
| direct reflection | تأمل ودرس | "That day changed my understanding of leisure." |
| short emotional sentences | جمل قصيرة فيها إحساس | "My legs ached. My breathing was uneven." |
- I'll be honest: I hated the first swimming lesson.اعتراف صريح + I = personal voice.
- Was I scared? Of course I was.
- My phone, my faithful friend, stayed in my bag all day, and I survived!
- I still don't know why I agreed, but I'm glad I did.
- makes the story feel real and believable — القصة تبان حقيقية.
- builds a close relationship with the reader — يقرّب القارئ من الراوي.
- helps the reader share / understand the narrator's feelings — نحس باللي هو حاسه.
- shows the narrator's personality (honest, funny, lazy, proud) — يبين شخصيته.
- makes the narrator likeable because he admits weakness — نحبه لأنه صريح.
- makes the lesson / reflection more convincing — الدرس في الآخر يقنعنا أكتر.
Why does the author use ___?»
When the question asks why the writer uses a technique, name the technique, quote it briefly, then give all the possible effects that fit the example.
لما يسألك «Why does the author use a simile / contrast / personal voice in line X?»
The writer uses a simile …
"like warm sand" …
- اشرح المعنى في جملة: … to compare his tiredness to warm, heavy sand.
- اكتب كل التأثيرات: to help the reader imagine…, to make the description vivid…, to emphasise…, to show his feelings…, to create a mood…
The author uses a simile, "like warm sand", to compare the narrator's tiredness to heavy, warm sand sitting in his legs and shoulders. The simile helps the reader to imagine exactly how his body felt. It makes the description vivid and turns an abstract feeling, tiredness, into something concrete that we can almost touch. It emphasises how heavy and deep his exhaustion was. At the same time, the word "warm" suggests a pleasant, comforting feeling, so the simile shows that his tiredness was mixed with satisfaction. Finally, it creates a calm, peaceful mood at the end of the story.
|---|---|---|---|
| Simile | like / as … as / as if | يخلي القارئ يتخيل ويأكد صفة | "like warm sand" |
| Contrast | but / however / while / then / at first … by the end | يبرز الفرق ويبين التغيير | "gentle and golden" ↔ "stronger" |
| Personal voice | I / me / my + مشاعر واعترافات | يخلي القصة حقيقية وقريبة | "Perhaps it was pride" |
- ✗ تكتب effect واحد عام: «to make it interesting» وبس ← ✓ اكتب كل الـ effects اللي تنفع.
- ✗ تقول simile لـ «I like cycling» ← ✓ like هنا فعل.
