Reading for Gist and Key Detail
إزاي تفهم الفكرة العامة لأي قطعة بسرعة (gist) وإزاي تلاقي المعلومة المحددة اللي السؤال عايزها (key detail).
الدرس ده عن إيه؟
Reading for gist means reading quickly to understand the general idea of a text. Reading for key detail means looking carefully for specific information: names, numbers, reasons and examples.
الدرس ده عن أهم مهارتين في القراءة: إنك تفهم الفكرة العامة للقطعة (gist)، وإنك تلاقي المعلومة المحددة اللي السؤال بيسأل عنها (key detail).
المهارة دي موجودة في كل الوحدات. الكتاب بيقولها صريحة في أهداف Unit 2: «read a report, an article and a narrative for gist and detail»، وفي Unit 4 (مقال مجلة عن الاستهلاك) وUnit 5 (مقال عن المناخ). وكمان كتير تحت القطع تلاقي سؤال زي: «Read this paragraph and give a sentence that summarizes the main idea».
يعني إيه Gist ويعني إيه Key Detail؟
Gist = the big picture (What is the text about? What is the writer's main point?). Key detail = the small facts that answer a question exactly (Who? How many? Why? When?).
| تدوّر على كلمة معينة وتقرا حواليها بالراحة (scanning = البحث السريع عن معلومة) | According to the text… / How many… / Why… / Give ONE example |
- Gist = طيارة: بتبص على القطعة من فوق، تشوف الشكل العام.
- Detail = عدسة مكبّرة: بتقرب على سطر واحد وتقراه كويس.
- في الامتحان: الطيارة الأول، وبعدين العدسة.
إزاي تلاقي الـ Gist؟ (4 خطوات)
To find the gist, read the title, the first paragraph, the first sentence of each paragraph (the topic sentence) and the last paragraph. Do not stop at difficult words.
Topic + what the writer says about it. e.g. "Screen time + can harm sleep, but small changes can help."
يعني: الموضوع + الكاتب بيقول عليه إيه. جملة واحدة، من غير أمثلة ومن غير أرقام.
إزاي تلاقي الـ Key Detail؟ (4 خطوات)
To find a key detail, underline the key word in the question, scan the text for it (or for a synonym), then read the sentence before and after carefully.
|---|---|---|
| reduce | cut down on / lower / decrease | يقلل |
| teenagers | young people / adolescents / students | المراهقين |
| throw away | waste / get rid of / end up in the bin | يرمي |
| important | essential / vital / key | مهم |
| problem | challenge / issue / difficulty | مشكلة |
| old objects | artefacts / ancient pieces | قطع أثرية |
أمثلة: Gist ولا Detail؟
- What is the main idea of the article?Gist: عايز الفكرة الكبيرة للمقال كله.
- Which is the best title for the text?Gist: العنوان الصح لازم يغطي القطعة كلها، مش فقرة واحدة.
- What is the writer's main purpose?Gist: الهدف (purpose) = الكاتب كتب ليه؟ يعلّم؟ يقنع؟ يحذّر؟ يحكي؟
- Give a sentence that summarises paragraph 2.Gist لفقرة واحدة: اقرا الـ topic sentence بتاعتها.
- How many hours of sleep do teenagers need?Detail: بتدوّر على رقم.
- According to the text, why do students waste food at school?Detail: بتدوّر على سبب (because / due to / as a result of).
- Give ONE example of an active leisure activity.Detail: مثال واحد بس من القطعة.
- What does the word "curated" in paragraph 3 mean?Detail (vocabulary in context): معنى الكلمة من الجملة اللي حواليها.
قطعة للتطبيق
اقرا القطعة دي (قطعة أصلية عن موضوع Unit 2: وقت الفراغ). طبّق خطوات الـ gist الأول، وبعدين جاوب على أسئلة الـ detail.
Switch Off, Tune In: One School's Screen-Free Friday
[1] Last year, a secondary school in Cairo noticed a worrying pattern. Many students arrived in the morning looking tired, and teachers complained that concentration dropped sharply after the first two lessons. When the school asked students about their evenings, more than half admitted that they spent over four hours a day on their phones, mostly scrolling through short videos.
[2] Instead of banning phones completely, the school decided to try a gentler idea: Screen-Free Friday. Every Thursday evening, students were encouraged to put their phones away until Friday night and replace screen time with an active hobby. Some chose football or cycling, others joined a drawing club, and a few started cooking with their families.
[3] The results surprised even the organisers. After eight weeks, students reported falling asleep faster on Thursday nights, and many said they felt calmer at the weekend. Teachers also noticed that students who took part regularly were more focused on Sunday mornings. However, not every student found it easy. Several admitted that they felt anxious during the first few weeks because they were afraid of missing messages from friends.
[4] The school's counsellor believes the experiment worked because it did not punish students. "We didn't tell them that screens are evil," she explained. "We simply gave them a chance to notice how they feel without them." The school now plans to offer the scheme to parents as well, so that whole families can take part.
[5] Screen-Free Friday will not solve every problem connected to technology. Still, it shows that small, voluntary changes can help young people build a healthier balance between their online and offline lives.
| Word / phrase | Meaning / use |
|---|---|
| worrying pattern | حاجة بتتكرر وتقلق |
| concentration | التركيز |
| admitted | اعترفوا |
| encouraged | اتشجعوا (من غير إجبار) |
| voluntary | اختياري |
| counsellor | الأخصائي / المرشد النفسي في المدرسة |
| scheme | خطة / برنامج |
| balance | توازن |
إزاي بييجي في الأسئلة؟ (أمثلة محلولة)
سؤال 1 (Gist — main idea, MCQ):
What is the main idea of the text?
a. Phones should be banned in all Egyptian schools. b. A school tried a voluntary screen-free day and found it had real benefits. c. Students in Cairo sleep less than students in other cities. d. Cooking is the best hobby for teenagers.
الإجابة: b. إزاي عرفنا؟ أول فقرة = المشكلة، التانية = الفكرة (Screen-Free Friday)، التالتة = النتايج، والأخيرة = الخلاصة «small, voluntary changes can help». يعني القطعة كلها عن تجربة اختيارية ونجحت. اختيار a غلط لأن القطعة بتقول Instead of banning phones. واختيار c مش مذكور. واختيار d تفصيلة صغيرة مش الفكرة الرئيسية.
سؤال 2 (Detail):
According to the text, why did some students find the scheme difficult at first?
الكلمة المفتاحية: difficult ← في القطعة مرادفها not every student found it easy (فقرة 3). اقرا الجملة اللي بعدها: «they felt anxious… because they were afraid of missing messages from friends».
Answer: Because they felt anxious about missing messages from their friends.
سؤال 3 (Gist لفقرة — summarise in one sentence):
Give a sentence that summarises paragraph 4.
Answer: The counsellor thinks the scheme succeeded because it encouraged students rather than punishing them.
Why…? ← Because… / How many…? ← They need… .
- في سؤال «According to the text» لازم الإجابة تبقى من القطعة، حتى لو رأيك مختلف.

Leftovers with a Future
Every day, the canteen at a school in Alexandria used to throw away trays of rice, bread and vegetables. A group of Year 11 students decided to find out why. After a week of observing, they discovered that portions were too large for younger pupils and that many students skipped lunch because the queue was too long. The group suggested two simple solutions: offering small and large portions, and opening a second serving point. Within a month, the amount of food in the bins had fallen noticeably. The students are now writing a short guide so that other schools can copy their idea.

The counsellor says, "We didn't tell them that screens are evil." Why was this important? Use evidence from the text.
Show answer
It was important because students did not feel punished, so they were more willing to try. The text says the experiment worked "because it did not punish students" and it simply gave them "a chance to notice how they feel". — السبب + الدليل من الفقرة 4.
A Cairo school noticed that students were tired and unfocused because of heavy phone use. Instead of a ban, it introduced a voluntary Screen-Free Friday. After eight weeks, students slept better and felt calmer, although some felt anxious at first. The school now plans to involve parents too.
- أول جملة = المشكلة (gist الفقرة 1).
- تاني جملة = الفكرة (gist الفقرة 2) بكلمة voluntary اللي بتلخص الأسلوب.
- تالت جملة = النتايج + المشكلة الصغيرة (فقرة 3) في جملة واحدة.
- آخر جملة = الخطوة الجاية (فقرة 4). مفيش اقتباسات طويلة ومفيش رأي شخصي، وده المطلوب في التلخيص.
