Stated vs Unstated Information

English

Stated information is said directly in the recording. Unstated information is not said in words: either the speaker suggests it (we can infer it), or it is simply not in the recording at all (Not Given).

True / False / Not Given + Justify.

Unit 3 («distinguish between stated and unstated information» في الـ media reports عن الاكتشافات)، وفي Units 6, 7, 8, 9, 10: المزارعة والأفيال، مجموعة الدراجات بتاعة Youssef، التعليم الفني، العلاقات اللي بتساعدنا نكبر، والـ swap events.

Stated (مذكورة)اتقالت صريح بالكلام ده أو بنفس المعنى«The swap takes place on the first Saturday of every month.»The swap is held once a month. ← True
Implied (ضمنية، مش متقالة بس مفهومة)مقالهاش بالحرف، بس الكلام يوصلك ليها بالعقل«Every week we run out of chairs.»The event is popular. ← مفهومة (inference)
Not Given (مش موجودة)التسجيل مقالش حاجة عنها خالص، لا أيوه ولا لأ(مفيش أي كلام عن الأسعار)Items at the swap are cheap. ← NG

خلي بالك في سؤال T / F / NG: لو المعنى الضمني واضح جدًا ومفيش تفسير غيره (زي «the first Saturday of every month» = once a month) بيتحسب True.

Not Given.

True ولا False ولا Not Given؟

True: the recording says the same thing (often in different words). False: the recording says the opposite. Not Given: the recording does not give enough information to say true or false.

  2. قارن المعنى مش الكلمات: «a monthly event» = «the first Saturday of every month» ← True.
مثال: الجملة «more frequent» والتسجيل «less often».
  • الكلمات المطلقة: only, always, never, all, completely, entirely, guarantees ← لو التسجيل قال «many» أو «sometimes» أو «can help» تبقى الجملة False غالبًا.
  • المقارنة: more / less / faster / the most ← لازم التسجيل يقارن فعلًا. لو قال «it is fast» بس، الـ «faster than» ممكن تبقى NG.
  • الأرقام والأزمنة: «over twenty years» والتسجيل «eighteen years» ← False. «last year» ← اتأكد من الزمن.
لو الجملة «The speaker believes…»

Justify

T – The reporter says the swap happens 'on the first Saturday of every month'.
F – She says organisers found it hardest to convince people to take things, not to give.
NG – The report mentions the items, but it does not say whether they are repaired. It would need to say 'volunteers repair items before…'.

Justify

  • The speaker clearly states that…
  • According to the report, …
  • The recording says the opposite: …
  • This is not mentioned. The audio would need to say…
  • The speaker only mentions…, not…

(Inference)

  • This suggests that…
  • The speaker implies that…
  • We can infer that…
  • This shows that…, although it is not said directly.

1: The Hidden Mosaic – Evening News Report

REPORTER: Good evening. I'm standing on a small site near Alexandria, where a team of Egyptian archaeology students has just finished three weeks of work beside a small storage building. Last Tuesday, while clearing sand from an old floor, one of them noticed a few coloured stones. By the end of the week, the team had uncovered part of a mosaic showing fish and birds.

The head of the team, Dr. Tarek Mansour, has taught archaeology for eighteen years. He told us the mosaic is probably from a private house, not a temple. 'We have to be careful,' he said. 'We have uncovered only about a quarter of it. The rest may be damaged or may not exist at all.'

Within hours, photos of the stones appeared online. One post, shared more than ten thousand times, claimed the mosaic was 'the biggest discovery of the year'. Dr. Mansour smiled when I read it to him. 'People love a big headline,' he said, 'but we will need months of careful documentation before we can say what it really is.'

Not everyone is happy about the online attention. A local guard explained that, since the photos appeared, groups of visitors have arrived at the gate every evening. The site is still closed to the public.

The team will return in the spring with conservation experts. Until then, the mosaic has been covered with sand again to protect it. For Evening News, near Alexandria.

1: True / False / Not Given + Justify

1. Dr. Mansour has taught archaeology for over twenty years.

2. The team has uncovered the whole mosaic.

3. The students used special cameras to find the mosaic.

1. False. التسجيل قال «for eighteen years» والجملة بتقول over twenty ← عكس. 2. False. قال «only about a quarter of it». كلمة whole فخ. 3. Not Given. كان لازم يقول «The team used special cameras…» علشان تبقى True.

2: Stated or unstated? (Inference)

What does Dr. Mansour's reaction to the online post suggest about his opinion of it?

It suggests he thinks the post exaggerates. He smiled and said 'People love a big headline' and that they need months of documentation.

2: Fix It, Don't Bin It – A Community Report

REPORTER: It's a Friday afternoon in a youth centre in Heliopolis, and the room is full of noise: the buzz of a small drill, a fan being tested and lots of conversation. This is the 'Fix It, Don't Bin It' repair café, which opens on the last Friday of every month.

The idea is simple. People bring broken things, such as lamps, radios, school bags and small electrical items, and volunteers try to repair them for free. The café was started two years ago by Nour Hamdy, a university student studying mechanical engineering. 'At first, only my friends came,' she said. 'Now we usually have around forty visitors each time.'

Visitors don't just watch. They are asked to sit next to the volunteer and learn how the repair is done. 'The aim is to teach skills, not just to fix objects,' Nour explained.

According to the volunteers' own records, the café has saved more than eight hundred items from being thrown away. However, not all repairs succeed. Some modern devices are designed in a way that makes them very difficult to open, and spare parts can be expensive.

Critics say small projects like this cannot solve the problem of waste on their own, because factories keep producing cheap products that break quickly. Nour agrees that bigger changes are needed. 'But we can't wait for factories,' she said. 'We can start with the lamp on your desk.'

  • BBC Learning English – 6 Minute English (audio): بعد ما تسمع، اكتب لنفسك 3 جمل: واحدة True، وواحدة False، وواحدة Not Given، وارجع للتسجيل وبرّر.
  • BBC World Service – news reports: .
  • BBC Sounds podcasts:
  • تمرين الكلمات المطلقة: اكتب جمل فيها only / always / completely / never وجرّب تغيّرها لـ some / often / partly.
Not Given = مفيش معلومة خالص.
