The Passive Voice for Formal Reporting
إزاي تكتب الخبر بشكل رسمي بالمبني للمجهول (was discovered / has been found / will be revealed / It is believed that…) News Report.
In the passive voice, the action or the thing that receives the action becomes the subject: A royal tomb was discovered in Luxor. We use it in news reports and formal writing when the action is more important than the person who did it.
Unit 3: Echoes of the Past، Lesson 3.4 (Social Media and Historical Events)، في الـ Writing Task: News Report (صفحة 98). I use the passive voice for formal reporting، وأمثلة الكتاب: A royal tomb was discovered in Luxor this week / Experts say more details will be revealed. Consolidation Review B: The inscriptions were translated by experts.
Active: the doer is the subject. Passive: the receiver (the object of the active sentence) is the subject. The doer can be added with by, or left out.
- Archaeologists discovered a royal tomb in Luxor.
- A royal tomb was discovered in Luxor (by archaeologists).Passive (مبني للمجهول): المفعول (a royal tomb) بقى في الأول، والفاعل ممكن نذكره بعد by أو نشيله خالص.
- حط be في نفس زمن الفعل الأصلي (is / was / has been / will be…)
- حط الفعل الأصلي في التصريف التالت (past participle = V3): discover ← discovered، find ← found، write ← written.
Passive = be (in the correct tense) + past participle. Only the form of be changes.
| الزمن | Active | Passive | التركيب |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present simple | Experts study the papyrus. | The papyrus is studied. | am / is / are + p.p. |
| Present continuous | Experts are studying the papyrus. | The papyrus is being studied. | am / is / are being + p.p. |
| Past simple | Divers found statues. | Statues were found. | was / were + p.p. |
| Past continuous | They were cleaning the mask. | The mask was being cleaned. | was / were being + p.p. |
| Present perfect | The team has discovered a tomb. | A tomb has been discovered. | has / have been + p.p. |
| Past perfect | Thieves had robbed the tomb. | The tomb had been robbed. | had been + p.p. |
| Future (will) | Experts will reveal more details. | More details will be revealed. | will be + p.p. |
| Modals | Visitors must handle it carefully. | It must be handled carefully. | modal (can / must / should / may) + be + p.p. |
- الـ passive = be + V3.
- بعد will / can / must / should / may دايمًا be (من غير s): will be revealed.
- بعد has / have / had دايمًا been: has been discovered.
We use the passive in formal reporting when: (1) the doer is unknown, (2) the doer is obvious or not important, (3) we want to keep the focus on the event or object, and (4) we want to sound objective.
The statue was stolen in the 1970s. |
The tomb was excavated last month. |
A royal tomb was discovered in Luxor this week. |
It has been announced that the site will open soon. |
Ancient Tomb Discovered in Luxor = An ancient tomb has been / was discovered in Luxor.
Reporting Passive: It is believed that…
Formal reports often use reporting verbs in the passive: It is believed / said / reported / thought / estimated that …, or The tomb is believed to be … / is thought to have been …
|---|---|---|
| It + passive + that | It is / was / has been + p.p. + that + جملة | It is believed that the tomb belongs to a royal princess. |
| Subject + passive + to + infinitive | الحاجة + is / are + p.p. + to be / to have + p.p. | The tomb is believed to belong to a royal princess. |
| لو الحدث في الماضي | is thought + to have been / to have + p.p. | The papyrus is thought to have been written 4,500 years ago. |
- It is estimated that the GEM will receive millions of visitors every year.
- It has been confirmed that the statue is genuine.
- The city is said to have been an important port in ancient times.
- The coins are thought to date from the Ptolemaic period.
- A royal tomb was discovered in Luxor this week. (What + Where + When).
- The discovery was announced by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
- Dozens of statues have been found under the water near Alexandria.
- The fragile papyrus is being examined in a special laboratory.
- More details will be revealed next month.
- The artefacts must be handled carefully.
- In the past, discoveries were reported slowly in newspapers.
- Today, photos of the site are shared online within minutes.
- The inscriptions were translated by experts. (Review B)
- The tomb had been robbed before it was found.
News Report
The book's news report has five parts: Headline – Lead – Details – Background – Closing. The passive fits naturally in every part.
|---|---|---|
| Headline | عنوان قصير وجذاب | Ancient Papyrus Found in the Delta |
| Lead | إيه حصل + فين + إمتى | An ancient papyrus was discovered in Kafr El-Sheikh on Sunday. |
| Details | مين اكتشفه، إيه هو، ليه مهم | It was found by a team of Egyptian archaeologists. It is believed to be over 2,000 years old. |
| Background | خلفية عن الموضوع | In the past, such discoveries were shared only in academic journals. |
| Closing | نهاية وتوقع | Experts say the papyrus will be displayed at the GEM next year. |
Sunken Statues Found Near Alexandria
Three granite statues were discovered under the sea near Alexandria last Tuesday. The statues were found by a team of Egyptian divers at a depth of eight metres. They are believed to have stood at the entrance to an ancient temple.
In the past, news of such finds was published weeks later. This time, photos were shared online within hours. The statues will be cleaned and studied before they are displayed to the public.
- العنوان: قصير ومن غير be (Found = were found).
- الـ Lead: إيه + فين + إمتى بالـ passive (were discovered … near Alexandria last Tuesday).
- الـ reporting passive (are believed to have stood) بيخلي الخبر موضوعي.
- الخلفية والنهاية: passive في الماضي (was published) وفي المستقبل (will be cleaned).
Only transitive verbs (verbs with an object) can be passive. Verbs like happen, arrive, die, appear, disappear, exist have no passive form.
- ✗ The accident was happened near the temple. ← ✓ The accident happened near the temple.happen مالهاش passive.
- ✗ Many old posts were disappeared. ← ✓ Many old posts disappeared.disappear مالهاش passive.
مثلًا: Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamun's tomb.
- ✗ The inscriptions was translated. ← ✓ The inscriptions were translated. (inscriptions
- ✗ The inscriptions were translate. ← ✓ were translated.
- ✗ The inscriptions have translating. ← ✓ have been translated. (Review B)
- ✗ The tomb discovered last week. ← ✓ The tomb was discovered last week.
- ✗ More details will revealed. ← ✓ will be revealed.
- ✗ A statue has be found. ← ✓ has been found.
- ✗ The site was visited from thousands of tourists. ← ✓ by thousands of tourists.
- ✗ It believes that the coins are Roman. ← ✓ It is believed that the coins are Roman.
- اتأكد من 3 حاجات: be في الزمن الصح، be متفقة مع الفاعل (was / were)، والفعل V3.
- كلمات الزمن بتحدد الـ be: yesterday / last week ← was / were · since / already ← has / have been · next month / soon ← will be.
