The Speaker's Perspective
A speaker's perspective is their point of view: what they think and feel about the topic. To find it, listen to how they say things, not only what they say: their word choice, their tone, the evidence they choose and their final message.
في الكتاب ده في Unit 1 (broadcast عن السوشيال ميديا وصورة المراهق عن نفسه: الكتاب بيدربك على «media bias, intensifiers, and rhetorical devices»، وبيسألك «What message is the speaker trying to convey?»)، وفي Unit 5 (الكتاب بيقول: «the speaker's perspective on renewable energy»، وبيسألك «Why is Dr. Hussain optimistic…?»).
يعني إيه Perspective؟
Perspective = attitude (positive / negative / balanced) + purpose (to inform / persuade / warn / advise) + certainty (sure / cautious).
|---|---|---|
| positive / supportive | مؤيد، شايف الموضوع كويس | This is a huge opportunity. / I strongly believe… |
| negative / critical | معارض، بينتقد | This is a serious problem. / Sadly, … |
| balanced | متوازن، بيعرض الناحيتين | On the one hand… on the other hand… / It has benefits, but… |
| optimistic | متفائل بالمستقبل | I'm confident that… / We're getting closer every year. |
100% | This may / might / could… / The evidence suggests… |
| worried / concerned | قلقان | What worries me is… / I'm concerned that… |
It is completely obvious that… |
- الكلمات اللي بتخفف (hedging): may, might, could, perhaps, it seems, suggests.
- الكلام المطلق (absolute language): always, never, everyone, nobody.
- الأسئلة البلاغية (rhetorical questions): «Do we really want our children to…?»
- Social media is absolutely destroying young people's confidence.intensifier + كلام قوي ← رأي سلبي جدًا وممكن يكون biased.
- Heavy use may be linked to lower self-esteem, although more research is needed.hedging (may) + although ←
- What worries me most is how quickly teenagers compare themselves to others.«اللي مقلقني» ← المتكلم concerned.
- Solar power has become remarkably cheap, and I'm confident the trend will continue.remarkably + I'm confident ← optimistic.
- Do we really believe a perfect photo shows a perfect life?
- Renewables are growing fast. However, the grid isn't ready yet.
- Everyone knows that gaming is a waste of time.«الكل عارف» ← كلام مطلق ← bias (مفيش دليل).
- The evidence suggests that short breaks improve focus.suggests ← بيقدّم دليل بحذر ← objective / cautious.
Do not mix the speaker's opinion with facts or with other people's opinions that the speaker reports.
|---|---|---|
| «Sixty per cent of users are under twenty-five.»
| «I think this figure is alarming.» | speaker's opinion | I think + alarming |
| «Some parents argue that phones should be banned.» | reported opinion |
| «Critics claim solar farms take too much land.» | reported opinion | Critics claim =
| «Personally, I disagree with them.» | speaker's opinion | Personally + I disagree |

1: Behind the Filter – Youth Radio Debate
PRESENTER: Welcome to Behind the Filter. Today we're asking: do beauty and lifestyle influencers harm teenagers' self-image? I have two guests: Dr. Samir Ezzat, a school psychologist, and Hassan Rady, a fitness content creator with half a million followers.
DR. EZZAT: Thank you. I'd like to start carefully. Social media is not the enemy, and many young people use it in healthy ways. However, what concerns me is the constant comparison. In my clinic, I meet students who feel ugly or lazy after scrolling for an hour. The research suggests that teenagers who spend more than three hours a day on image-based apps may be more likely to report low self-esteem. 'May' is important here. It is a link, not proof that one causes the other.
HASSAN: With respect, I think people blame influencers far too much. My videos show real workouts and healthy meals. Thousands of young men have messaged me to say they've become fitter and more confident. Isn't that a good thing? Of course, I use good lighting, like any professional. But I never pretend my life is perfect.
DR. EZZAT: I believe Hassan wants to help, and his intentions are good. But even honest creators show the best ten seconds of a long day. A teenager watching at midnight doesn't see the bad days. So I'd ask parents and schools to teach media literacy: the habit of asking 'What am I not seeing?'
PRESENTER: Hassan, a final word?
HASSAN: Just this: switch off when you feel bad, and follow people who make you feel stronger, not smaller.
PRESENTER: Two perspectives, one important message: it's not only what we watch, it's how we watch it.

1: Choose the correct answer (attitude)
Which best describes Dr. Ezzat's perspective?
a. Social media should be banned for teenagers.
b. Social media has no effect on self-image.
c. Social media can be healthy, but constant comparison may harm self-esteem.
d. Influencers are deliberately lying to young people.
الإجابة: c. بدأ بـ «Social media is not the enemy» (يعني مش ضدها خالص)، وبعد However قال اللي مقلقه: «the constant comparison». وd غلط لأنه قال «his intentions are good».
2: Which words show… ? (Analyse)
Which words show that Dr. Ezzat is cautious about the research?
الإجابة: 'The research suggests', 'teenagers… may be more likely', and 'It is a link, not proof'.
3: What message is the speaker trying to convey? (Evaluate)
The presenter's final message is that the problem is not only the content we watch, but the way we watch it. Both guests also give advice: Dr. Ezzat suggests media literacy, and Hassan tells young people to switch off when they feel bad and follow people who make them feel stronger.

2: Is Egypt Ready for Wind? – The Energy Hour Podcast
HOST: Welcome to The Energy Hour. With me are two guests with very different views: Eng. Mostafa Hegazy, who designs wind farms in the Gulf of Suez, and Dr. Ibrahim Sobhy, an economist.
ENG. HEGAZY: Honestly, I'm extremely excited. The Gulf of Suez has some of the strongest and most regular winds in the world. Every year, the turbines become bigger and more efficient. I truly believe wind could become one of the main sources of Egypt's electricity within our lifetime. This is a golden opportunity, and we must not miss it.
DR. SOBHY: I share the goal, but I'm a little more careful. Building wind farms is expensive at the start, and the money often has to be borrowed. We also need new power lines to carry the electricity from the desert to the cities. If we move too quickly without planning, costs could rise for ordinary families. So yes to wind, but step by step.
ENG. HEGAZY: Of course planning matters. But think of the alternative. How long can we keep burning fuel that pollutes our air and gets more expensive every year?
DR. SOBHY: That's a fair point. Perhaps the real question isn't 'if', but 'how fast'.
HOST: A good place to stop. In our next episode, we'll ask young engineers what skills this new industry will need.
