Argumentative Paragraph
إزاي تكتب فقرة إقناع واحدة (150-180 كلمة) عن قضية بيئية: رأي واضح، أسباب وأدلة، رد على الرأي المعاكس، وخاتمة.
الدرس ده عن إيه؟
An argumentative paragraph is a structured unit of writing that focuses on one debatable claim supported by evidence, reasoning and analysis. Its purpose is to persuade the reader to accept a viewpoint or take a particular action.
الـ argumentative paragraph يعني فقرة جدلية / فقرة إقناع: فقرة واحدة فيها رأي واحد ممكن الناس تختلف عليه (debatable claim)، وإنت بتثبته بأسباب وأدلة، وبترد على الرأي المعاكس، علشان تقنع القارئ يوافقك أو يعمل حاجة.
في الكتاب الدرس ده في Unit 5: The Greenhouse Effect (Concept 5: Sharing the Planet)، صفحة Argumentative Paragraph (صفحة 148-149)، وبيتكرر في درس Greening Egypt (صفحة 161) وفي الـ Summative Assessment (صفحة 167). وفي كل مرة المطلوب: فقرة (150-180) words عن موضوع بيئي.
الوحدة عن أزمة المناخ: الـ greenhouse effect، الـ fossil fuels، الطاقة المتجددة (solar, wind, hydro, geothermal)، ومشروعات مصر الخضرا زي Benban Solar Park.
الفكرة ببساطة: محامي في فقرة واحدة
Think of yourself as a lawyer: you state your case, give your evidence, answer the other side, and then repeat your case in new words.
- Always start with a clear opinion in the Topic Sentence. = ابدأ دايمًا برأي واضح.
- Use linking words: First / Furthermore / However / As a result / In conclusion.
- The Concluding Sentence must RESTATE the opinion — not copy it word for word. = كرّر الرأي بكلام تاني.
- One paragraph = ONE main idea only. = فقرة واحدة = فكرة رئيسية واحدة.
الهيكل زي ما الكتاب بيعلّمه (4 أجزاء)
| الجزء | What to write | بالعربي | Useful language |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Topic Sentence | State your opinion clearly. This is the MAIN IDEA of the paragraph. | رأيك بوضوح في أول جملة، ودي الفكرة الرئيسية. | It is clear that … / I strongly believe … / There is no doubt that … |
| 2. Supporting Sentences | Give 2-3 reasons or pieces of evidence to support your opinion. | 2-3 أسباب أو أدلة. | First, … / Furthermore, … / In addition, … / As a result, … / Because of this, … |
| 3. Concession | Mention the opposite view, then refute it. This makes your argument stronger. | اذكر الرأي المعاكس وبعدين فنّده (رد عليه وبيّن إنه ضعيف). | Although some people believe … / While it is true that … / However, … |
| 4. Concluding Sentence | Restate your opinion in different words. Do NOT introduce a new idea. | كرّر رأيك بكلام مختلف، ومتدخلش فكرة جديدة. | In conclusion, … / To sum up, … / Therefore, it is evident that … |
كلمة مهمة: refute = تفنّد / ترد على رأي وتبيّن إنه مش مقنع. يعني مش بس تقول «بعض الناس بيقولوا كذا» وتسكت، لازم تكمّل: However / Nevertheless + ردّك.
القواعد اللي الكتاب طالبها جوه الفقرة
Unit 5 asks you to use cause-and-effect structures, modal verbs, and adverbials of degree and frequency in your argumentative paragraphs.

| Adverbials of frequency (تكرار) | always / often / increasingly / rarely / currently / generally | بتقول الحاجة بتحصل قد إيه | Heatwaves are increasingly common in Egypt. |

Topic sentence ← First … ← Furthermore … ← As a result … ← Although … However … ← In conclusion …
(Model Answer)
دي فقرة واحدة كاملة عن قضية بيئية. لاحظ إنها فقرة واحدة من غير ما نقسمها.
There is no doubt that single-use plastic bags should be banned in Egyptian supermarkets. First, plastic bags take hundreds of years to break down. As a result, they pile up in our streets, canals and seas. Furthermore, plastic in the sea leads to the death of turtles and fish, which often mistake floating bags for food. Because of this damage, several countries, such as Kenya and Rwanda, have already banned plastic bags. In addition, cloth bags can be used hundreds of times, so a ban would actually save shoppers money in the long term. Although some people believe that a ban would harm small shop owners, this argument is not convincing. However, shops could easily sell cheap reusable bags, and the government could support them during the change. In fact, doing nothing would cost far more because of the damage to fishing and tourism. In conclusion, it is evident that saying goodbye to plastic bags is a small step that would bring huge benefits to our environment and our economy.
- Topic sentence: «There is no doubt that … should be banned» = رأي واضح ومباشر من أول جملة، وبعبارة رسمية من الكتاب (There is no doubt that).
- Supporting sentences: 3 أسباب، كل واحد بأداة ربط: First (البلاستيك مبيتحللش) ← Furthermore (بيموّت الحيوانات البحرية) ← In addition (الشنط القماش بتوفر فلوس).
- Cause & effect: الكتاب طالب اتنين على الأقل، والفقرة فيها أكتر: As a result ، leads to ، Because of (مرتين)، وso. وده بيوضح علاقة السبب والنتيجة.
- Evidence: دليل حقيقي: دول زي Kenya and Rwanda منعت الشنط البلاستيك. والـ present perfect (have already banned) بيبيّن إن ده حصل ولسه ساري.
- Concession + refutation: «Although some people believe that a ban would harm small shop owners» = الرأي المعاكس، وبعدين الرد: this argument is not convincing + However وحل عملي (المحلات تبيع شنط رخيصة والحكومة تساعد) + In fact = «وفي الحقيقة» بتقوّي الرد بحجة أخيرة.
- Modal verbs: should (توصية) في الأول، could (إمكانية) في الرد، would (نتيجة متوقعة). ده بالظبط اللي الكتاب طالبه في الوحدة.
- Concluding sentence: In conclusion, it is evident that + نفس الرأي بكلام مختلف (saying goodbye to plastic bags is a small step …) ومفيش فكرة جديدة.
- One paragraph = ONE main idea: كل الجمل بتخدم فكرة واحدة: منع الشنط البلاستيك. وعدد الكلمات داخل في 150-180.
