Pair and Group Discussions
In a pair or group discussion you share ideas with other students. It is not a speech: you listen, respond, agree or disagree politely, ask others for their views and, often, reach an agreement together.
في الكتاب ده موجود في كل الوحدات تقريبًا تحت *Discussion in groups of four* أو *Small-Group Discussion*، والأسئلة مكتوب جنبها أفعال زي Explain / Analyse / Evaluate. (Unit 4 – Food waste: *Can you reach an agreement?*)، واجتماع لجنة تخطيط (Unit 5 – Eco-Leaders Programme: *Discuss as a group and agree on a final two-day plan*)، وGlobal Skills Roundtable في Unit 8.
Presentation
| Presentation | Discussion | |
|---|---|---|
I agree with Mariam, and I'd add that…* ده بيبين إنك سامع وفاهم.
Explain / Analyse / Evaluate
The book labels discussion questions with thinking verbs. Each verb asks for a different kind of answer.
|---|---|---|---|
| Explain | اشرح إيه اللي بيحصل أو إزاي | How are young people taking action to protect the environment? | Young people are… For example,… |
| Analyse | حلل: ليه؟ | Why are young people becoming more active in the fight against climate change? | One reason is that… This is connected to… |
| Do you think young people can make a real difference? Why or why not? | I believe that, to some extent,… because… |

|---|---|---|---|
What do you think, Ali? |

- Building on what Omar said, notifications also damage our concentration when we study. (Unit 2 – screen time).
- What do you think, Youssef? Have you ever trusted a viral post about history? (Unit 3 – social media and history).

(Model Discussion)
Ali (leader): OK, let's start. The question is whether young people can make a real difference in the climate crisis. Mariam, what do you think?
Mariam: I think they can, to a large extent. Young people are very active online, so they can spread awareness quickly. For example, in the text, a girl from Luxor started a Nile clean-up with five friends, and it grew to over two hundred volunteers in a year.
Omar: That's a good point, and I'd add that young people are also inventing solutions. The engineering student built a low-cost solar water heater. That's real change, not just talking.
Nour: I see your point, Omar, but I'm not sure I agree completely. A clean-up or one heater is great, but the climate crisis is huge. Big changes, like solar parks, need governments and companies.
Ali: So, are you saying that young people can't really make a difference, Nour?
Nour: Not exactly. I mean they can make a difference, but they can't solve the problem alone.
Mariam: I agree with Nour up to a point. However, young people can also push governments to act. When thousands of students speak up, leaders listen.
Ali: We have one minute left. Shall we agree on a final answer?
Omar: How about this: young people can make a real difference by raising awareness and starting local projects, but they need support from governments to make large-scale change.
Nour: Yes, I agree with that.
Ali: Great. So, to sum up, our group thinks young people can make a real difference, especially locally, but the biggest changes need everyone working together.
- Mariam: رأي بدرجة (*to a large extent*) + سبب + دليل من نص الوحدة = JRE صغيرة جوه المناقشة.
- Omar: وافق وضاف فكرة جديدة (*That's a good point, and I'd add that…*) بدل ما يكرر نفس الكلام.
- Nour: اعترضت بأدب (*I see your point, but I'm not sure I agree completely*)، ولما اتسألت وضّحت قصدها (*Not exactly. I mean…*).
- Mariam تاني: *I agree with Nour up to a point. However,…* = اعتراف + رد.
- الوصول لاتفاق: *Shall we agree…? / How about this:…* ← ده المطلوب في أنشطة الكتاب (*agree on a final plan / reach an agreement*).
As Ali said,…*
- ✗ *You are wrong.* / *No, this is wrong.* ← ✓ *I see your point, but…*
What do you think, Sara?*
- ✗ تتكلموا كلكم في وقت واحد ← ✓ *Sorry to interrupt, but…* واستنى دورك.
So, we all agree that…*
I agree with … because…* / *I see your point, but…* / *What do you think?*
- سؤال زميلك (*Can you give an example?*) مشاركة كاملة ومحسوبة لك.
٢) Rank and agree (Unit 4):
Rank the causes of food waste from most serious to least serious: overbuying, poor storage, festivals, misunderstanding labels. Compare your ranking with another group. Can you reach an agreement?
الحل: *I'd put overbuying first because it happens every week. — I see your point, but I think misunderstanding labels is more serious because people throw away food that is still safe. — How about putting overbuying first and labels second?
٣) Planning meeting (Unit 5): *Each person presents their ideas… Discuss as a group and agree on a final plan… Present your group's programme using claim + reason + evidence.* ← استخدم جمل الكتاب: *I think we should include… / What if we started with…? / I agree / disagree because…*
