Acknowledging an Opposing Viewpoint
Although / Despite / However.
A strong speaker does not pretend the other side does not exist. You acknowledge (admit) the opposing view politely, then respond to it and show why your opinion is still stronger. This is called conceding and refuting.
الكتاب بيطلب المهارة دي في وحدات كتير: Unit 2 (*acknowledge counter-arguments*)، Unit 3 (*recognize an opposing viewpoint* + concession clauses)، وUnits 6 – 10 كل presentation فيها جملة *Although some people believe…, I think…* وفيها سؤال Concede / Acknowledge.
When you mention the other side, you show that you are fair, informed and confident. Your listener trusts you more. But do not stop there: you must always answer the opposing view.
|---|---|---|---|
| ١. اعترف | Acknowledge / Concede | اذكر رأي الناحية التانية وقول إن فيه حاجة صح | Some people believe that… / It is true that… / Admittedly,… |
Nevertheless,… / But the problem is that… |
| ٣. ارجع لرأيك | Return to your position | قول إن رأيك لسه أقوى | That is why I still believe… / So, overall,… |
- Some people believe that online shopping saves time.١.
- However, free returns mean that many items are sent back and destroyed.٢.
- That is why I still believe returns should be limited.٣.
It is true that… / However,… / That is why….
(Concession Clauses)
Concession words introduce the idea you are admitting. Although / Even though / While are followed by a full clause (subject + verb). Despite / In spite of are followed by a noun or -ing.
|---|---|---|---|
| Although / Even though | جملة كاملة (فاعل + فعل) | بالرغم من إن | Although the GEM is very large, visitors find their way easily. |
| While it is true that… | While it is true that gaming is fun, it can reduce sleep. |
| Despite / In spite of | اسم أو فعل بـ -ing (مش جملة) | بالرغم من | Despite its modern design, the museum focuses on ancient history. |
| Admittedly, | جملة كاملة، وبعدها however | لازم أعترف إن | Admittedly, solar panels are expensive at first. However, they save money later. |
| It may be argued that… | جملة، وبعدها nevertheless | ممكن حد يقول إن | It may be argued that digital tours are convenient. Nevertheless, visiting in person is unique. |
| Some people believe / claim that… | جملة، وبعدها However | في ناس شايفة إن | Some people claim that hobbies waste time. However, they reduce stress. |
- ✗ Although fast fashion is cheap, but it harms the planet. ← ✓ Although fast fashion is cheap, it harms the planet.
- ✗ Despite it is expensive, … ← ✓ Despite the high price, … / ✓ Although it is expensive, … (despite
- ✗ Despite of the rain, … ← ✓ Despite the rain, … / ✓ In spite of the rain, … (of مع in spite بس)
- ✗ *You are wrong!* (قلة ذوق) ← ✓ *I understand your point, but…* (رد مؤدب)
In a conversation, be polite. First show that you heard the other person, then give your view. Never attack the person, only discuss the idea.
الكتاب في Unit 6 (The Wetland Meeting) وUnit 10 (The Convincing Post) بيدي جمل زي دي:
- Although some people believe that …, I think …
- Some people argue that … However, …
- It is true that … but …
- Admittedly, … However, …
- While it is true that …, …
- It may be argued that … Nevertheless, …
- I understand your concern, but …
- I see what you mean. However, …
- That's a fair point, but …
- I understand why you're doubtful, but …
- You're right that …, but have you considered …?
- I agree with you up to a point, but …
(Refuting)
- However, the evidence shows that …
- The problem with this view is that …
- This ignores the fact that …
- Nevertheless, …
- Even so, …
- That is why I still believe …
- So, overall, the benefits are greater.
- Even so, my view remains that …
- While other views exist, … remains more convincing.
(Compromise)
- A fair compromise might be …
- A balanced approach may be the best solution.
- Perhaps both sides could agree that …
|---|---|---|
| تقول إن الفايدة صغيرة جنب الضرر | minimise it | Black Friday saves some money, but the waste and debt it causes are much bigger. |
| تجيب دليل يعارضه | counter-evidence | Some say one person cannot help. However, Farida's Nile clean-up grew from five friends to over two hundred volunteers. |
| تقول إنه مش دايمًا صح | it is not always true | Hobbies can take time, but only ten minutes a day is enough to make progress. |
(Model Answer)
Unit 7 (*Although some people believe…, I think…*).
In my opinion, schools should ban mobile phones during lessons. This is because notifications break students' concentration, and it takes time to focus again after every message.
Admittedly, phones can be useful. Some people believe that students need them to search for information or to call their parents in an emergency. I understand this concern, and it is a fair point.
However, schools already have computers for research, and parents can call the school office if something urgent happens. Even though phones are helpful, they distract students far more often than they help them in class.
That is why I still believe a ban during lessons is the right choice. A fair compromise might be to let students use their phones during breaks, so they stay connected without losing focus in class.
- البداية: رأي واضح (*In my opinion*) وسبب (*This is because*).
- الاعتراف: *Admittedly* و*Some people believe that* وذكر سببين حقيقيين للناحية التانية (البحث والطوارئ). وقال *it is a fair point* علشان يبان عادل.
وكمان استخدم *Even though + clause* صح من غير but.
- الرجوع للرأي: *That is why I still believe* وبعدها حل وسط (*A fair compromise might be…*) زي ما الكتاب بيطلب في الديبيت.

What does your example concede or acknowledge about the genuine needs of local communities?

٢) Concede ثم conclusion (Unit 7 و10 — fact-checker):
Concede: Although some brands are making genuine improvements, many use vague language. Then give your conclusion.
