Rhetorical Devices and Their Effects

English

Rhetorical devices are language techniques that writers and speakers use to persuade or affect their audience. In an exam you must identify the device and explain its effect on the reader.

Unit 1 (Reading: «recognize rhetorical devices such as rhetorical questions and intensifiers, and understand their effects»). الكتاب بيعرض في جزء Writing in Action جدول اسمه «Types of persuasive writing techniques & their effects» فيه 4 أدوات: rhetorical questions, intensifiers, hedging words, absolute words + الـ neutral language. Consolidation Review A.

The same idea can sound strong, careful or certain depending on the device the writer chooses.

  • Do you really need your phone in bed?Rhetorical question:
  • Using your phone late at night is extremely harmful.Intensifier: extremely
  • Using your phone late at night may affect your sleep.
  • You should never, ever use your phone in bed. No excuses.Absolute words: never / no excuses =

Hedging wordsكلمات بتخلي الكلام حذرmay, might, could, some, often, research suggestsshow uncertainty or caution — تبيّن حذر وعدل، وتخلي الكاتب يبان موثوق
Absolute wordsكلمات من غير أي استثناءalways, every, never, all, no excuses, everyonestate ideas with full confidence — بتخلي الكلام يبان أكيد 100%

  • Intensifier = Increase (يزوّد القوة).
  • Hedging = Hesitate (يتردد / يحذر).
  • Absolute = All or nothing

Writers also use direct address, inclusive language, repetition, the rule of three, emotive language, statistics and expert opinion, and contrast.

  • The writer uses the intensifier "extremely" to emphasise how serious the problem is. This makes readers take the issue more seriously.

Look Up!

(1) Good morning, everyone. Have you ever counted how many times you check your phone in a single day? (2) I tried it last week, and the number was extremely embarrassing: eighty-three times. (3) We all know the feeling. (4) A message arrives, and we reply. (5) A video ends, and we watch another. (6) A friend posts a perfect photo, and we feel a little worse about ourselves.

(7) I am not saying that phones are evil. (8) Research suggests that social media may help some teenagers stay connected with friends who live far away. (9) However, a school counsellor told me that students who spend many hours online often find it harder to sleep and concentrate. (10) That is a really serious price to pay.

(11) So, what can we do? (12) We can switch off notifications. (13) We can leave our phones outside the bedroom. (14) We can spend breaks talking, laughing and playing together. (15) Your phone will always be there tomorrow. (16) Your school days will not. (17) Look up, my friends. Look up!

سؤال 1 (MCQ زي المراجعة): Which persuasive technique is used in line (1)?

a. Absolute words b. Rhetorical questions c. Intensifiers d. Hedging words

الإجابة: b. «Have you ever counted…?»

2: Why does the speaker use "may" and "some" in line (8)?

Answer: He uses hedging ("may", "some") to show caution, to avoid exaggerating, to sound fair and balanced and to make himself seem more reliable. This makes the audience trust him more because he does not exaggerate.

3: Find an example of repetition in paragraph 3 and explain its effect.

Answer: "We can… We can… We can…" (lines 12-14). The repetition emphasises that there are many simple solutions and makes the message memorable and positive.

  • تفتكر إن أي سؤال = rhetorical question ← لو الكاتب هيجاوب عليه على طول (زي line 11 «So, what can we do?»)
  • تكتب تأثير عام زي «to make it nice» ← استخدم تأثيرات من الجدول: make the reader think / emphasise / show caution.
  • دوّر على very / extremely / really / totally ← intensifier.
  • دوّر على may / might / could / some / suggests ← hedging.
  • دوّر على always / never / every / all / no excuses ← absolute.
  • وبعدين اكتب: device + quotation + effect.

    Show answer
b — show uncertainty or caution.

B. Read the speech "Look Up!" again. Answer the questions.

  1. 7. Find an intensifier in line (2). What is its effect?

    Show answer
"extremely embarrassing" — possible effects: it makes the feeling stronger, it emphasises how serious his phone habit is, it shows his strong and honest feelings (he was surprised by his own habit), and it makes the audience take the problem seriously.
  2. 8. Find an example of inclusive language in paragraph 1. Why does the speaker use it?

    Show answer
"We all know the feeling" (line 3) — possible effects: to make the audience feel that everyone shares the problem, to build a connection with them, to create a sense of shared responsibility, and so that they do not feel attacked.
  3. 9. What device is used in lines (4)-(6)? What is its effect?

    Show answer
Repetition of the same pattern ("…, and we…"). You can also call it the rule of three (three examples in a row). Possible effects: it shows how automatic our phone habits are, it emphasises the point, it makes the message memorable and it creates a strong rhythm.
  4. 10. Line (9) mentions "a school counsellor". Which device is this, and why is it used?

    Show answer
Expert opinion — possible effects: to give the argument credibility, to give evidence, to make the argument more convincing and to make the speaker sound reliable.

"talking, laughing and playing" — 3 activities that make the solution sound fun and memorable.
  6. 12. Lines (15)-(16) use contrast. Explain the effect.

    Show answer
"Your phone will always be there tomorrow. Your school days will not." — possible effects: the contrast shows that school days are precious and limited, it makes the right choice clear, and it persuades the audience to value their school days more than the phone.
  7. 13. "Your phone will always be there tomorrow." Is "always" biased here? Explain.

    Show answer
Not really biased — it is an absolute word, but it is used for emphasis about something almost certainly true, not to attack anyone. Absolute words are a problem when they make unfair claims.
  8. 14. Why does the speaker repeat "Look up!" at the end?

    Show answer
To emphasise his main message, to make it memorable, and to end the speech in a strong and motivating way.

C. Name the device in each sentence.

  3. 23. Rewrite this absolute sentence with hedging: "Leftovers always go in the bin."

    Show answer
Leftovers often end up in the bin in some homes.
  4. 24. Why does a writer use hedging in an argument? Give TWO possible effects.

    Show answer
Any two: to show caution / to avoid exaggerating / to sound fair and balanced / to seem more reliable.
Model answer: analysing devices in a paragraph94 words
Task: How does the speaker of "Look Up!" use rhetorical devices to persuade his audience? Refer to TWO devices.

The speaker uses rhetorical devices to make his audience think about their phone habits. Firstly, he opens with a rhetorical question, "Have you ever counted how many times you check your phone in a single day?" This makes listeners reflect on their own behaviour from the very first line. Secondly, he uses repetition in "We can switch off notifications. We can leave our phones outside the bedroom." This emphasises that the solutions are simple and possible, so the audience feels hopeful rather than guilty. Overall, these devices make the speech persuasive without sounding aggressive.
