Evaluating the Reliability of Online Content
A reliable source gives information that is accurate, supported by evidence and written by someone who knows the topic. An unreliable (misleading) source uses emotion, exaggeration and pressure instead of evidence.
الكتاب بيقولك: «Read this post carefully. You will analyze its language and assess its reliability».
The book gives five features to look for: emotional language, absolute language, urgency signals, selective evidence and conspiracy framing.
| العلامة (Feature) | تدوّر على إيه (What to look for) | بالعربي | أمثلة لكلماتها |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emotional language | words designed to provoke, excite or alarm | كلمات بتلعب على مشاعرك: تخضّك أو تحمّسك أو تخوّفك | MIND-BLOWING, SHOCKING, terrifying, heartbreaking, amazing, CAPITAL LETTERS, !!! |
| Absolute language | claims with no qualification or evidence | كلام مطلق ١٠٠٪ من غير «ممكن» أو «بعض» ومن غير دليل | always, never, every, all, nobody, PROVE, 100%, literally anyone |
| Urgency signals | language creating panic or secrecy | استعجال وضغط علشان تتصرف من غير تفكير | Share NOW, before it gets deleted, limited stock, last chance, before it's taken down |
| Selective evidence | using only part of the image / information |
| Conspiracy framing | suggesting official suppression of truth | بيقول إن العلماء أو الحكومة أو الإعلام «بيخبّوا الحقيقة» | They don't want you to know, science is hiding the truth, the REAL story |
Emotional – Absolute – Selective – Sense of urgency – Conspiracy.
Language is not the only clue. Also ask: Who wrote it? What evidence is given? When was it posted? Why was it written? Do other reliable sources say the same?
|---|---|---|---|
| Who?
| What evidence?
| When?
| Who else? |

THEY LIED TO YOU!!! The pyramids were NOT built by Egyptian workers. Every historian knows the truth but nobody dares to say it. This one photo PROVES everything. Share before this post disappears! #TheRealHistory
318,000 likes · 96,000 reposts
|---|---|---|
| Emotional language | THEY LIED TO YOU!!! |
| Absolute language | Every historian … nobody dares … PROVES everything | |
| Urgency signals | Share before this post disappears! | |
| Selective evidence | This one photo | |
| Conspiracy framing | THEY LIED … nobody dares to say it | بيوهمك إن فيه حد بيخبي الحقيقة. |
@GizaHeritageMuseum · Official museum account
Who built the pyramids? Excavations near Giza have uncovered the tombs of workers, as well as bakeries and living areas. According to archaeologists, these finds suggest that thousands of skilled Egyptian labourers worked on the pyramids in organised teams. Read the full research summary on our website.
- Official museum account
- Excavations near Giza have uncovered…
- According to archaeologists
- these finds suggest that…
- Read the full research summary
- Check the source:
- Look for evidence: فين المصدر؟ ولا «scientists say» وخلاص؟
- Read laterally:
- Decide: reliable / unreliable / need more information.
- ✗ «The post is unreliable because it is on social media.» ← ✓ لازم تذكر علامة محددة + مثال من البوست: «It uses urgency signals such as "Share before this gets deleted".»
- ✗ «It is reliable because it has 2 million followers.» ← ✓
- One feature that makes this post unreliable is [emotional language / urgency signals …].
- For example, the post says "…".
- This is designed to [make readers panic / share without thinking / believe without evidence].
- Therefore, I would not trust this post because … / Before sharing, we should always check the source.
الأسئلة في الكتاب بتيجي كده: «Explain two or three features that make the post reliable or unreliable (e.g. emotional language, urgency signals, selective evidence, absolute language).» و«Explain why checking online information is important before sharing it with others.» وكمان سؤال زي: «Is a smartphone video taken by a civilian more or less reliable than a news broadcast? Justify your view.»
Explain two features:
@QuickRich_Egy · 1.1M followers
I made 500,000 LE in ONE WEEK from my phone!!! No experience needed — literally ANYONE can do it. Only 20 places left in my course. Link in bio before the price goes up! #Success
Model answer: One feature that makes this post unreliable is absolute language. For example, it says "literally ANYONE can do it", which is a claim with no evidence or qualification. Another feature is urgency signals: "Only 20 places left" and "before the price goes up" pressure readers to pay quickly without thinking. Therefore, I would not trust this post, especially because the writer is trying to sell a course.
JRE (smartphone video vs news broadcast):
Model answer: In my opinion, a smartphone video can be useful but is usually less reliable than a news broadcast on its own. This is because a short clip may show only part of an event, so it can be a form of selective evidence. In contrast, professional news teams are expected to check facts and use several sources. However, the most reliable approach is to compare both, because even a news channel can make mistakes.

Post A — @OceanAlert_Now · 3.1M followers
SHARKS ARE FINISHED!!! Scientists CONFIRM it is already too late. Every beach in the world will be shark-free by next year. The media is hiding this. SHARE before it's banned!
Post B — @MarineScienceClub_CU · University marine science club
A study published in a scientific journal reports that some shark populations in open oceans have fallen sharply since the 1970s, mainly because of overfishing. Not all species are affected in the same way, and some protected areas show signs of recovery. Link to the study in the comments.
7. Which post is more reliable? a. Post A, because it has more followers b. Post B, because it names its evidence and uses careful language c. Post A, because scientists confirm it d. Both are equally reliable

Show answer
«The media is hiding this.»9. Find an example of absolute language in Post A.
Show answer
«Every beach in the world will be shark-free by next year.» أو «it is already too late».10. Which words in Post B show careful (hedged) language? Give TWO.
Show answer
«some shark populations» و«Not all species are affected in the same way» (وكمان «mainly»). 11. State whether the statement is True (T) or False (F). Justify your answer. Post B gives readers a way to check its information.
Show answer
True — Justification: «Link to the study in the comments.»12. State whether the statement is True (T) or False (F). Justify your answer. Post A names the scientists who made the discovery.
Show answer
13. Although Post A is unreliable, is the problem it talks about completely false? Explain using Post B.
Show answer
No. Post B shows that some shark populations really have fallen because of overfishing. The problem is real, but Post A exaggerates it. Unit 6: «exaggeration can make people distrust real evidence».
Choose the correct answer.
14. Which of these is the strongest sign that an online source is reliable? a. It has a blue tick b. It has thousands of likes c. Other trusted sources report the same information d. It uses capital letters
Show answer
(a) و(b) مش دليل.15. A post says, "Only 3 hours left to buy at this price!" This is an example of ______ a. selective evidence b. urgency signals c. conspiracy framing d. expert opinion
Show answer
b — ضغط بالوقت.16. "These finds suggest that…" The word *suggest* makes the claim ______ a. more absolute b. more careful and honest c. more emotional d. more urgent
Show answer
17. The main aim of a post that says "Link in bio to learn my EXACT secret method" is probably to ______ a. inform readers about history b. sell something to readers c. warn readers about danger d. share a scientific study
Show answer
b — «Link in bio» + «secret method» = عايز يبيعلك كورس أو منتج.
18. Explain TWO features that make this post unreliable: "UNBELIEVABLE!!! The Nile will be completely dry by next summer! One satellite photo PROVES it. The experts are hiding the truth!"
Show answer
Model: First, the post uses emotional language, such as "UNBELIEVABLE!!!", to alarm readers instead of informing them. Second, it uses conspiracy framing: "The experts are hiding the truth" suggests that experts are lying, without any evidence. (You could also mention selective evidence: "One satellite photo" is used to prove a huge claim.) Therefore, the post is unreliable.19. Rewrite this post so that it is reliable: "Drinking coffee ALWAYS ruins teenagers' sleep!!! Share NOW!"
Show answer
Model: "According to sleep experts, drinking too much caffeine in the evening may make it harder for some teenagers to fall asleep. Try to avoid coffee after 4 p.m. Source: a national health website." Why is it important to check online information before sharing it? Give TWO reasons.
Show answer
Model: Firstly, sharing false information can spread fear or harm people, for example by making them buy useless products. Secondly, when exaggerated posts spread, people may stop trusting real evidence about serious problems such as climate change.21. A fashion brand posts: "Our clothes are 100% eco-friendly!" What TWO questions should you ask before believing it?
Show answer
Model: 1) What evidence or certificate shows that the clothes are eco-friendly? 2) Why is the brand posting this — to inform me or to make me buy more? — أسئلة What evidence? وWhy? 22. Is a post by an official museum account always more reliable than a post by an ordinary visitor? Justify your view.
Show answer
Model: An official museum account is usually more reliable, but not always (J). This is because a museum has experts and is responsible for what it publishes, while a visitor may not check facts (R). For example, the museum post in this lesson names archaeologists and uses careful language such as "suggest" (E). However, an ordinary visitor can also share useful first-hand photos, and even an official account can make mistakes, so it is still wise to compare sources.
Emotional language – Absolute language – Urgency signals – Selective evidence – Conspiracy framing.
Who? What evidence? When? Why? Who else says it?
