(Plot Summary)
Chapter 1 (A Dream of Adventure) و Chapter 2 (Professor Challenger's Secret).
Edward Malone asks Gladys Hungerton to marry him. She refuses. She says she loves a man who has done something brave, but she also says a truly brave man does not act just to impress someone.
Malone asks his editor, Mr McArdle, for a dangerous assignment. McArdle sends him to Professor Challenger, a famous zoologist who hates journalists. With help from his friend Tarp Henry, Malone writes a letter pretending to be a student of science.
Challenger soon discovers that Malone knows nothing. Malone admits he is a reporter, and they fight until they roll out onto the steps. A policeman arrives, but Malone says "It was partly my fault" and will not press charges. Challenger respects this and invites him back inside.
Challenger shows his evidence: Maple White's sketchbook (with red cliffs, a rock tower and a stegosaurus-like animal), a damaged photograph and a piece of a wing from a creature he shot. He believes prehistoric animals survived on the isolated plateau.
جه عسكري (policeman)، بس Malone قال «It was partly my fault» ورفض يشتكي.
Chapter 3 (The Expedition Is Chosen) و Chapter 4 (Into the Unknown).
At a lecture at the Zoological Institute, Challenger says "There is nothing amusing about evidence." Summerlee agrees to test the claim himself. Malone and Lord John Roxton volunteer, so the three men form the investigating party.
Lord John tells Malone that he once helped local workers escape from a cruel rubber-trading group led by Pedro Lopez. At Para they hire Zambo, Gomez, Manuel and some Indigenous boatmen. At Manaos they open Challenger's envelope at noon: it is blank. Then Challenger walks in. He will guide them himself.
They travel up the Amazon on a steam launch, then by canoe, then on foot. They see the red cliffs, but cannot climb them. They climb the separate rock tower, cut down the tree on top, and it falls across the gap as a bridge. All four cross onto the plateau.
Then Gomez pushes the tree bridge down. He shouts that Pedro Lopez was his brother and that he wants revenge on Lord John. The four men are trapped. Zambo stays loyal: he climbs the tower, and they pull food and ammunition across with a thin rope.
Chapter 5 (Trapped in the Lost World) و Chapter 6 (Malone's Night Adventure).
The explorers build a camp called Fort Challenger. They see iguanodons, and Summerlee says, "You were right." They escape from a swamp full of pterodactyls. Something strong and clever breaks into their camp.
Malone climbs a tall tree and sees a large lake and smoke near some caves. He names the lake Lake Gladys. That night he goes out alone. He sees a stegosaurus, is chased by a huge meat-eating dinosaur and falls into a pit with old stakes. It is a trap made by people.
When Malone gets back, the camp is empty. That night Lord John returns: the ape-men have captured Challenger and Summerlee. Their chief looks like Challenger. Malone understands that real courage means going back into danger because other people need you.
شافوا iguanodons (ديناصورات بتاكل نباتات)، وهنا Summerlee اعترف وقال «You were right».
Chapter 7 (Prisoners of the Ape-Men) و Chapter 8 (The Battle for the Plateau).
The ape-men are throwing human prisoners from a cliff. Lord John shoots the ape chief, and the explorers rescue Summerlee, Challenger and the human prisoners. The prisoners are the Accala, a people who live in caves on the far side of Lake Gladys. Their young chief is later called Maretas.
The Accala and the explorers defeat the ape-men in a battle. Malone says he "found little joy" in this harsh ending. They see more creatures, and the Accala show them an old passage that an earthquake blocked. But the Accala do not want them to leave: they want them to stay as protectors.
Chapter 9 (The Hidden Way Home) و Chapter 10 (Proof Before the World).
Challenger makes a balloon from gas and an animal membrane, but the test fails. Then Maretas secretly shows Malone a hidden passage in a cave. The explorers leave at night with rope, and Challenger carries a large wooden case. Below, Zambo meets them with a rescue party.
At a special meeting at the Zoological Institute in London, some scientists still doubt the story. One asks for "the animal itself". Challenger opens the wooden case: a living pterodactyl climbs out, circles the hall and flies out of an open window.
Malone visits Gladys. She has married William Potts, an ordinary man. She says that perhaps she wanted a quieter life. Malone is hurt at first, but he understands that his life does not need her approval.
Lord John shows diamonds from the blue clay in the pterodactyl swamp, worth at least two hundred thousand pounds, in four equal shares. Lord John plans another expedition to the plateau, and Malone decides to go with him.
|---|---|---|
| لندن | London (the Gazette, Challenger's house, the Zoological Institute) | بداية ونهاية القصة: الجريدة، بيت Challenger، المحاضرة والاجتماع الأخير |
| الأمازون | the Amazon, Para and Manaos | طريق الرحلة بالمركب والقوارب في الغابة |
| الهضبة | the plateau (Maple White Land) | فيها الديناصورات والـ ape-men والـ Accala |
Gladys |

- Q: Why does Challenger invite Malone back into the house after their fight?
- A: Because Malone refuses to press charges when the policeman arrives. He admits that it was partly his fault. Challenger is impressed by his fairness, and his anger changes into respect.
- Q: Evaluate Malone's decision to use deception in order to get an interview with Challenger. Was his method acceptable?
- A: In my view, it was not fully acceptable, because lying is dishonest and it made Challenger very angry. However, it was understandable, since Challenger refused to meet journalists. Also, Malone later admitted his fault, and the meeting led to a great discovery.
|---|---|---|
| J = Justify | قول رأيك / حكمك | Yes, I believe Zambo deserves to be a hero. |
| R = Reasoning | اشرح ليه | His loyalty after Gomez's betrayal kept the explorers alive. |
| E = Evidence | هات دليل من القصة | He climbed the rock tower and helped them pull food and ammunition across. |
Justify: Yes, I strongly believe that Zambo deserves to be considered one of the heroes of the expedition.
Reasoning: After Gomez's betrayal, the four explorers were trapped on the plateau with no bridge and no known way down. At that moment they depended completely on someone below. Zambo could easily have left with the others, but he chose to stay. A hero is not only a person who fights monsters, but also a person who keeps his promise when it is hard.
Evidence: As soon as Gomez had gone, Zambo climbed the rock tower and shouted, "Tell me what to do!" The explorers used a thin rope to pull food and ammunition across the gap. He stayed at his camp below for weeks, and at the end he was waiting with a rescue party. Without Zambo, the explorers might never have survived.
(Yes … deserves).

(Answer the questions)
15. Explain how Maple White's sketchbook, the damaged photograph and the wing fragment support Challenger's claim.
Show answer
Each piece of evidence is weak alone, but together they are much harder to dismiss. The sketchbook shows the cliffs and an animal like a stegosaurus. The photograph, although damaged, shows the rock tower and a winged shape. The wing fragment comes from a creature Challenger shot. 16. Why do many scientists in London refuse to believe Challenger at first?
Show answer
Because his claim seems impossible and his evidence can be questioned: the photographs are damaged and could be called false. Also, Challenger is rude and refuses to give exact directions. 17. What does Zambo do after Gomez's betrayal?
Show answer
He climbs the rock tower, helps the explorers pull food and ammunition across with a rope, and promises to stay below and help them. Why is the ending with Gladys surprising?
Show answer
Malone hoped she would admire him as a hero, but she has married William Potts, an ordinary man, and says she perhaps wanted a quieter life. 19. To what extent was the expedition a success? Justify your answer.
Show answer
To a great extent. They proved Challenger's claim with a living pterodactyl, made many discoveries and found diamonds. However, they were nearly killed many times and were betrayed by Gomez. 20. JRE: Was Challenger right to keep the exact location of the plateau secret? Give J, R and E.
Show answer
J: Partly yes. R: Careless visitors could destroy the place, but secrecy also made people doubt him. E: In Chapter 4 he made everyone promise not to publish the route, and in London Summerlee described the route without revealing the exact location.
- The Lost World — Arthur Conan Doyle — 1912 — نسخة الوزارة 10 فصول.
