Chapter 10 is the final chapter: the explorers are back in London, where they must prove their story, and Malone learns the true meaning of his adventure.

In London, many scientists still doubt the explorers' story, because photographs, drawings, insects and bones can all be questioned. A special meeting is held at the Zoological Institute. Summerlee, once the sceptic, now gives the main report as a witness, but some people are still not convinced. One sceptic says that only the animal itself would satisfy him.

Challenger smiles. With Zambo's help, Malone brings the heavy wooden case. Challenger opens it, and a living pterodactyl climbs out, flies round the hall and escapes through an open window. No one laughs at Challenger after that. The story is proved.

Malone goes to see Gladys, but she is now married to a quiet, ordinary man, William Potts. Malone feels foolish and hurt, but he soon understands that his life does not need her approval. Later, Lord John reveals a box of diamonds that he found in the blue clay of the pterodactyl swamp, worth at least two hundred thousand pounds, and shares them equally. Challenger will build a museum, Summerlee will retire and finish his work, and Lord John will lead another expedition. Malone chooses to go with him. He has learned that courage is a choice made again and again.

You are back. William Potts.
I would rather go with you.”

صندوق Challenger = pterodactyl عايش (الدليل).

  • “He was a witness.”
  • “The animal itself,”
  • “No one laughed at Professor Challenger after that.”
  • “Perhaps I learned that I wanted a quieter life.”Gladys غيّرت رأيها.
  • “My life no longer needed Gladys's approval to have value.”
  • “Not yet… I would rather go with you.”Malone
  • “Courage is a choice made again and again”

Evidence versus belief: From the beginning, people laughed at Challenger. Only the living pterodactyl, the strongest possible evidence, makes everyone believe.

True courage: Courage is not a prize you win once. It is a choice you make again and again, especially when others depend on you.

Personal growth: Malone loses Gladys, but he gains something more valuable: knowledge of himself.

Fame, love and wealth: The novel shows all three (the public success, Gladys, the diamonds), but none of them is Malone's real reward.

Change of character: Summerlee changes from sceptic to witness, and Malone changes from a boy who wants to impress into a man who chooses for himself.

Irony: Malone travelled the world to become an adventurer for Gladys, but she married an ordinary man who has never had an adventure.

Why does the living pterodactyl convince the audience ← قارن: other evidence can be questioned ↔ a living animal cannot be faked.
To what extent does the ending complete the theme of courage ← اربط الفصل الأول (Gladys تطلب بطل) بـالفصل العاشر (Courage is a choice).

Chapter Summative —

1. Answer the following questions.

Q1. Why does the living pterodactyl convince the audience when the other evidence does not?

The other evidence, such as damaged photographs, drawings, insects and bones, can all be questioned. A sceptic argues that photographs can be altered, specimens can come from other places, and even honest travellers can make mistakes. A living pterodactyl, however, cannot be faked or explained away. Hundreds of people see it climb out of the box and fly round the hall with their own eyes, so no one can doubt the story any more.

Q2. Explain how Gladys's marriage changes Malone's understanding of the purpose of his adventure.

At first Malone feels foolish and hurt, because he started the expedition to prove himself to Gladys. However, the shock makes him think again. He realises that the journey became much larger than Gladys: he faced danger for his friends, worked as part of a team and saw things no reporter expected to see. He understands that his life no longer needs Gladys's approval to have value.

Q3. How did Lord John discover the diamonds and what do the four explorers plan to do with their shares?

Lord John noticed blue volcanic clay in the pterodactyl swamp. He had seen clay like that before in a diamond mine, so he kept going back to the swamp in his cane cage and secretly collected stones. After returning, he had one tested, and it was a valuable diamond. Challenger plans to build a private museum, Summerlee will retire and finish his postponed work, Lord John will organise another expedition to the plateau, and Malone wants to join him.

Q4. Analyze the significance of Lord John's diamonds and Malone's decision to join another expedition.

The diamonds explain Lord John's mysterious trips to the swamp and give the explorers wealth and freedom to follow their dreams. Each man's plan shows his values: science for Challenger and Summerlee, adventure for Lord John. Malone's decision to join another expedition is even more significant. He does not choose marriage or comfort, but adventure for its own sake. This shows that he is no longer trying to impress anyone, and that he has discovered who he really is.

Q5. Analyze the importance of Summerlee's changing from Challenger's strongest skeptic to a public witness supporting the discovery.

Summerlee's change is very important because it gives the discovery credibility. At the start, he was Challenger's strongest critic and joined the expedition to test his claim. Because everyone knew he had doubted Challenger, his report carries great weight. His change also shows good science in action: he changed his mind only after he saw real evidence on the plateau. However, his report alone is still not enough for everyone, so the living pterodactyl is needed.

Q6. To what extent does the ending complete the theme of courage that begins in chapter 1?

The ending completes the theme of courage to a great extent. In Chapter 1, Malone believes that courage is something heroic that will win Gladys's admiration. During the journey, especially in Chapter 6, he learns that real courage means going into danger for others. In the final chapter he loses Gladys but understands that courage is “a choice made again and again”, when fear is real and someone depends on you. His decision to join another expedition shows that he now chooses adventure for himself, not to impress anyone.

وبدأنا بـ to a great extent.

Q7. Evaluate Challenger's decision to use a living pterodactyl as proof at the public meeting. Was it effective and responsible? Explain.

It was extremely effective, because it silenced every doubter at once, and no one laughed at Challenger after that. However, it was not very responsible. A wild flying reptile was released in a crowded hall, people screamed and stood on chairs, and the animal escaped through an open window into London. It could have hurt someone, and the scientists lost the chance to study a living specimen. So the decision was effective but risky and careless.

JRE 1171 words
Task: By the end of the novel, is Malone a hero according to the lesson he has learned about courage? (Reasoning: what kind of courage the story values / Evidence: the final chapter and at least one earlier chapter)

Justify: Yes, by the end of the novel Malone is a true hero according to the lesson he has learned about courage.

Reasoning: The story does not value courage that is used to look heroic or to impress others. It values courage that is chosen again and again, when fear is real and when other people depend on you. Malone shows this kind of courage when he risks his life for his friends, and at the end he chooses adventure freely, not to win anyone's approval.

Evidence: In Chapter 6, Malone goes out alone because of pride, but then he understands that real courage is going back into danger for others and follows Lord John to rescue his friends. In Chapter 7, he fires at the guards and helps to support Summerlee as they escape. In the final chapter, even after Gladys marries William Potts, he realises that his life does not need her approval. He then chooses to join Lord John's next expedition, saying, “I would rather go with you.”

JRE 2162 words
Task: Does the ending suggest that personal growth is more valuable than fame, love, or wealth? (Reasoning: what Malone gains compared with what he first wanted / Evidence: Gladys, the public success, the diamonds, and Malone's final decision)

Justify: Yes, the ending clearly suggests that personal growth is more valuable than fame, love or wealth.

Reasoning: At the beginning, Malone wanted to become a famous hero so that Gladys would love him. By the end, he has fame, he has lost love, and he has gained wealth, but none of these is his real reward. What he really gains is self-knowledge, true friendship and a mature understanding of courage. These things stay with him and guide his choices.

Evidence: The public meeting brings great success, and no one laughs at Challenger any more, but Malone's biggest moment is a private one. Gladys marries William Potts, yet Malone understands that his life “no longer needed Gladys's approval to have value”. Lord John gives each man a share of diamonds worth at least two hundred thousand pounds, but Malone does not use his share to settle down. Instead he chooses another expedition, because adventure is “about discovering what you were capable of”.
