The Lost World · Chapter 9: The Hidden Way Home
Chapter 9 follows the secret plans at the end of Chapter 8: now the explorers finally find a way down and return home.
Challenger shows his plan: a balloon made from a huge dried membrane of a prehistoric animal, filled with hydrogen gas from a mud pool. In the first test the balloon lifts so strongly that it almost carries the men away, then the rope snaps and it flies off. Challenger says the principle is proved, but no one wants to ride in it.
Zambo tells Malone that help is coming. Lord John is still “studying” at the swamp. Then Maretas secretly leads Malone into a cave and shows him a hidden opening that leads down. That night the four men follow a long dark tunnel and find a round opening in the outer cliff. Through it they see the moon. With their rope, the descent is possible.
They prepare to leave secretly, because they are not sure the Accala will let them go. Challenger insists on carrying a large wooden case. Before entering, Malone looks back at the plateau and thinks about how it has changed them. They climb down, reach Zambo and a rescue party of twenty men, and travel back to England. Challenger guards his case, Lord John keeps a small box, and Malone wonders what Gladys will say.
قال: “Our way down.”
- رد Challenger: قام ونفض هدومه وكان مبسوط: “An excellent demonstration” و“The principle is proved.”
Lord John صرخ: “The moon!”
Zambo جري عليهم بابتسامة كبيرة: “You come back! I knew you would come back!”

- “Our way down,”Challenger
- “The principle is proved.”
- “A way out?”
- “The moon!”
- “A plan that does not involve flying inside a dinosaur.”
- “We had learned to depend on one another.”
- “You come back! I knew you would come back!”Zambo
Science and its limits: Challenger's balloon is clever, but it is dangerous and fails. The real solution comes from Maretas.
Local knowledge and kindness: Maretas helps the explorers, perhaps because they saved his life, even though his people want them to stay.
Teamwork: In the balloon test and in the escape, the explorers literally hold on to one another.
وMalone قالها صريحة: we had learned to depend on one another.
Loyalty: Zambo never gives up. He waits, sends news and welcomes them with joy.
Change and growth: Looking back at the plateau, Malone sees how the journey has changed all of them.
Freedom and secrecy: The explorers leave secretly because freedom matters more than comfort.
(Techniques)
|---|---|---|
| Humour (كوميديا) | all of them “dragged across the ground together” | منظر مضحك بيخفف التوتر وبيورينا الفريق ماسك في بعض. |
| Suspense | “a red glow seemed to block the passage” | |
| Imagery (صور وصفية) | small fires, the forest, Lake Gladys reflecting the moon | بتخلينا نشوف الهضبة جميلة قبل ما يسيبوها، فنحس بالوداع. |
| Reflection (تأمل الراوي) | “Yet the lost world had also changed us.” |
| Foreshadowing / mystery | Challenger's wooden case, Lord John's small box | |
| Contrast | Challenger's dangerous balloon ↔ Maretas's simple secret path | |
- ✗ The explorers escape in Challenger's balloon. ← ✓ The balloon fails. They escape through a hidden passage shown by Maretas.
- ✗ The red glow was a fire. ← ✓ It was the moon seen through an opening in the cliff.
- ✗ The Accala leaders said goodbye to them. ← ✓ They left secretly, without telling the Accala leaders.
- ✗ Maretas went down the tunnel with them. ← ✓ Maretas was gone that night, perhaps to avoid being seen helping them.
- ✗ Challenger tells Summerlee what is in the case. ← ✓ He only says “Scientific material” and refuses to explain.
- ✗ Challenger went down first. ← ✓ Lord John went first. Challenger came last, protecting his case.
- سؤال balloon plan and why it fails ← اشرح الفكرة (hydrogen + membrane) وبعدين السبب (lifted too strongly ← the rope snapped).
- سؤال limits of Challenger's plans and local knowledge ← قارن: البالون خطير وفشل ↔ Maretas عارف المكان والحل آمن.
- سؤال To what extent ← جاوب بدرجة: to a great extent / partly وهات أمثلة.
Chapter Summative —
1. Answer the following questions.
Q1. Explain Challenger's balloon plan and why the first test fails.
Challenger finds a mud pool where hot gas containing hydrogen bubbles up from the ground. He collects the gas inside a huge dried membrane from a prehistoric animal to make a balloon that could carry one person at a time down from the plateau. In the first test he ties a heavy stone to it, but the balloon lifts far too strongly. It drags Challenger, Malone and Lord John across the ground, and then the rope snaps and the balloon flies away.
Q2. How does Maretas help the explorers discover a hidden way out of the plateau?
Maretas waits for Malone secretly and makes sure no one is watching. He leads him up a narrow stair into a deep cave passage. At the back wall he moves several stones and reveals a small opening. Then he points at Malone, at the opening and finally downwards, to show that it is a way out. Malone and his friends follow this passage and find an opening in the outer cliff.
Q3. Analyze what the hidden passage suggests about the limits of Challenger's scientific plans and the value of local knowledge.
Challenger's balloon is a clever scientific idea, but it is dangerous and nearly kills the men. The hidden passage, which Maretas knows about, is simple and safe. This suggests that science alone cannot solve every problem. The people who live in a place often understand it better than visiting experts. Real success comes when scientific knowledge and local knowledge work together.
Q4. To what extent does the chapter show that the explorers have learned to depend on one another?
To a great extent. During the balloon test, Malone grabs Challenger and Lord John grabs Malone, so they literally hold on to one another. They explore the dark tunnel together with lamps and rope, and they climb down one after another. Malone also says directly, “We had learned to depend on one another.” However, they still keep some secrets, such as Challenger's case and Lord John's box.
To what extent = قد إيه: بدأنا بـ To a great extent + أمثلة + however (لسه فيه أسرار).
Q5. Analyze the significance of Malone looking back at the plateau before entering the hidden passage.
This moment is a farewell and a reflection. Malone sees the fires of the Accala, the forest and the moon on Lake Gladys, which shows the beauty of the lost world. He remembers that in London he only dreamed of adventure. He realises that although they were frightened, injured, trapped and divided, the plateau has changed them and taught them to depend on one another. It shows his growth and prepares us for the end of the adventure.
Q6. Evaluate the explorers' decision to leave the Accala secretly. Was secrecy necessary, even after the Accala had helped them?
I think secrecy was necessary, although it was a little ungrateful. The Accala had treated them generously, but they wanted the explorers to stay as protectors and had refused to give them ropes or timber. If the explorers had announced their plan, the Accala might have stopped them or closed the passage. Maretas himself disappeared to avoid being seen helping them, which shows the danger. So secrecy was the only way to protect their freedom.
Q7. Evaluate Challenger's insistence on carrying the heavy wooden case during the escape. Was this scientifically responsible or unnecessarily risky?
In my opinion, it was risky but scientifically responsible. The case was heavy, and carrying it through a narrow tunnel and down a rope could slow the group or cause an accident. However, Challenger knew that the world might not believe them without strong proof. He called it “Scientific material” and guarded it carefully, and he came down the rope last, still protecting it. In the end, the risk was worth it because science needs evidence.
Justify: Yes, I believe that Maretas is the key person in the explorers' escape.
Reasoning: Other people helped, but their help could not work without Maretas. Challenger's scientific plan failed, and Zambo's rescue party could do little while the explorers had no safe way down. Maretas gave them the one thing they really needed: a hidden way out. His local knowledge succeeded where science had failed.
Evidence: Challenger's balloon shot upwards, dragged the men across the ground and flew away when the rope snapped. Meanwhile, Zambo could only report that help was coming. Then Maretas secretly led Malone into a cave, moved several stones and revealed a small opening, pointing “finally downwards”. Through this passage the explorers found the opening in the outer cliff and climbed down with their rope.
- الفكرة القوية: local knowledge succeeded where science had failed.
Justify: Yes, I think Zambo's loyalty is just as important as the scientists' knowledge.
Reasoning: The scientists' knowledge gives the expedition its purpose, because they understand and record the discoveries. But knowledge is useless if the explorers cannot survive and return home. Zambo's practical loyalty keeps a link with the outside world, gives them hope and makes sure that help is ready when they come down. The two qualities work in different ways, but the expedition needs both.
Evidence: Zambo stayed at his camp below the cliff for weeks and never abandoned them. He told Malone that a messenger had gone to find stronger ropes and more men. When the explorers came down, a rescue party of twenty men with ropes and equipment was waiting, and Zambo ran to them, saying, “I knew you would come back!” Without this help, the long journey back to the Amazon would have been much more dangerous.
