Chapter 7 follows straight on from Chapter 6: Malone and Lord John go to rescue their captured friends from the ape-men.

Lord John: Lead the way.

Lord John and Malone move secretly through the forest to the ape-men's settlement. They see huts high in the trees and several prisoners: Summerlee, Challenger and some small, strong human prisoners. The ape-men are throwing human prisoners off the cliff onto sharp bamboo canes as part of a cruel ceremony. Summerlee is next.

Lord John shoots the ape chief, and Malone fires at the guards. The ape-men are confused by the rifles. Challenger pulls Summerlee to the trees, and the group, with the rescued human prisoners, escapes to their hiding place. Summerlee thanks them.

The rescued people are called the Accala. Their young chief explains with gestures that they live in caves on the far side of Lake Gladys and have fought the ape-men for generations. Lord John decides that the group should go with them. The Accala's people arrive in canoes and welcome them. In the caves the scientists find drawings of the plateau's animals. At a council the young chief wants to fight the ape-men. Summerlee does not want to join a war, but the others agree, and the next morning they get ready for battle.

  • “A shout could reveal our position.”Lord John حذر وذكي.
  • “a cruel ceremony”الكاتب بيوصف الـ ape-men بالقسوة.
  • “I believe I owe you and Lord John a considerable debt.”Summerlee
  • “You can repay it by staying alive.”
  • “A natural record of the animal life”Summerlee
  • “We did not come here to join a war.”
  • “Now we were about to take part in a battle for the lost world.”

Teamwork: Each explorer uses a different strength in the rescue. Lord John plans and shoots, Malone helps with the guards and the rifle, and Challenger saves Summerlee.

Courage for others: Malone now uses his courage to help others, as he decided at the end of Chapter 6.

Civilisation and cruelty: The ape-men are cruel, while the Accala are grateful, organised and live in protected caves with drawings.

Science versus survival: Challenger wants to study the caves, but Summerlee wants to escape first.

Conflict and violence: The explorers came for science, but now they are pulled into a war between two groups.

Chapter Summative —

1. Answer the following questions.

Q1. Explain how Lord John and Malone rescue Summerlee, Challenger, and the Accala prisoners.

Lord John and Malone move secretly through the forest and hide near the ape-men's settlement. They wait for a clear shot. When Summerlee is about to be thrown from the cliff, Lord John shoots the ape chief and Malone fires at the guards. The ape-men are confused by the rifles. Challenger pulls Summerlee to the trees, Malone gives him a loaded rifle, and Lord John covers the retreat while the Accala prisoners follow them to the hiding place.

Q2. Explain who the Accala are and what conflict has existed between them and the ape-men.

The Accala are a group of small, strong humans who live in caves on the far side of Lake Gladys. They have a young chief whom they respect greatly. They and the ape-men have fought for generations. The ape-men control the forest on the explorers' side of the plateau, and they often capture Accala hunters and carry them away.

Q3. Why do the explorers decide to travel with the Accala and why does the cave settlement interest the scientists?

They travel with the Accala because the ape-men know their old camp, so it is no longer safe. The Accala have friends, food and a position that is easy to defend. The caves interest the scientists because they may show how humans first reached the plateau, and because their walls have drawings of the plateau's animals, which are a natural record of animal life and perhaps its history.

Q4. How does the rescue scene show the value of teamwork and the different strengths of the explorers?

The rescue works only because each man uses his own strength. Lord John is the planner and the best shot, so he chooses the moment and covers the retreat. Malone is quick and brave, so he fires at the guards and runs out with a loaded rifle. Challenger is physically strong, so he pulls Summerlee away and helps to support him. Without any one of them, the rescue could have failed.

Q5. Analyze the disagreement between Summerlee and the others about becoming involved in the Accala conflict.

Summerlee believes that the explorers came for science and that their first task is to escape, so he does not want to join a war. Lord John and Challenger see it differently. Lord John argues that the ape-men will come after them anyway and that the Accala gave them shelter. Challenger thinks that a victory may give them safe access to the plateau. The disagreement shows Summerlee's caution and the others' practical thinking, and it shows how their mission is changing.

Q6. Analyze the importance of the drawings inside the Accala caves as a record of life on the plateau.

The drawings are important because they are evidence made by people who have lived on the plateau for a long time. They show iguanodons, flying reptiles, fish-like animals and creatures the explorers have not yet seen. Summerlee calls them “a natural record of the animal life”, and Challenger thinks they may also record its history. So the drawings help the scientists learn more and support Challenger's discovery.

Summerlee.

Q7. Evaluate the explorers' decision to take part in the coming battle. Was it justified, or did it take them too far from their original mission?

I think the decision was mostly justified. The ape-men were already hunting the explorers, so fighting was a form of self-defence. The Accala had also given them shelter, and the ape-men had shown great cruelty to prisoners. On the other hand, Summerlee is right that they came to search for scientific truth, not to join a war. However, staying alive is necessary before any science can continue, so I believe that their choice was reasonable.

Q8. Evaluate Lord John's decision to leave the old camp and travel with the Accala. Was it the safest option available? Explain.

Yes, I think it was the safest option. The ape-men knew where the old camp was, and they had already attacked it once. Staying there would put everyone in danger again. The Accala had food, many friends and caves high above the ground that are protected from large animals. Although the explorers could not understand their language, travelling with a large, grateful group was safer than being alone.

JRE 1123 words
Task: Are the explorers right to support the Accala against the ape-men? (Reasoning: the strongest reason for your view / Evidence: the prisoners, the danger to the explorers, or the Accala's help)

Justify: Yes, I believe that the explorers are right to support the Accala against the ape-men.

Reasoning: The strongest reason is that the explorers are already in danger. The ape-men have attacked their camp and are hunting them, so helping the Accala is also a way of protecting themselves. In addition, the Accala have helped the explorers, so it is fair to help them in return.

Evidence: The ape-men have shown terrible cruelty by throwing human prisoners from the cliff onto sharp bamboo canes in “a cruel ceremony”, and Summerlee nearly died this way. Lord John says that “the ape-men will come after us anyway”. Finally, the Accala welcomed the explorers, gave them shelter in their caves and bowed to them with thanks.

Accala.
JRE 2122 words
Task: At this point, should the expedition make escape its first priority rather than further scientific exploration? (Reasoning: which goal is more urgent and why / Evidence: Summerlee's argument and the group's situation)

Justify: Yes, I think escape should be the expedition's first priority at this point.

Reasoning: Escape is more urgent because the explorers' lives are in danger every day. Their scientific discoveries are valuable, but if they die on the plateau, no one in London will ever learn about them. Survival must come first, and science can continue later, perhaps on a better prepared expedition.

Evidence: Summerlee says clearly, “Our first task is to escape this place,” and he does not want to join a war. The group's situation supports him: they are exhausted, Summerlee could barely walk after the rescue, and the ape-men know their old camp. Even Challenger's wish to study the caves cannot help them if they do not survive.

  • الحكم واضح: escape first.
