The Lost World: Fort Challenger، الـ iguanodons، هجوم الـ pterodactyls، المعسكر المكسور، ولغز الدخان، مع إجابات أسئلة الكتاب.
(Chapter Summary)
The explorers build a camp surrounded by thorny branches, and Lord John names it "Fort Challenger". Soon they see a group of iguanodons, large plant-eating dinosaurs. Even Summerlee is amazed and admits, "You were right." Later they find one of these animals torn apart, which shows that a dangerous meat-eating dinosaur lives nearby.
They discover a swamp full of pterodactyls. The scientists are excited, but one creature sees them and the whole group attacks. Malone is stabbed in the neck, Challenger is knocked down, and they escape only after Lord John fires his rifle. Back at camp, they find their supplies broken and scattered by something strong and clever.
Challenger is happier than ever, and Summerlee, now convinced, argues only about how to classify the animals. Lord John focuses on survival, while Malone tries to observe and survive. Every day they call to Zambo, who is still waiting below. They feel they are being watched, and Lord John finds a footprint that looks almost human. Finally, Malone climbs a tall tree and sees a lake, caves on the far side and a thin line of smoke. Someone, or something, is living on the plateau.
وفي الآخر Summerlee قال: «You were right».
Lord John: «وذكي كفاية إنه يدخل من غير ما يكسر سور الشوك».

Chapter Summative —
1. Answer the following questions.
1. Explain how the iguanodons provide strong evidence that Challenger's story is true.
Show answer
The iguanodons are living prehistoric animals, seen clearly in daylight by all four explorers at the same time. They are not drawings, unclear photographs or a single bone. There are adults and young ones, which shows that they are a living group, not one strange survivor. The evidence is so strong that even Summerlee forgets to argue and says, "You were right." 2. What happens at the pterodactyl swamp, and why are the explorers forced to escape quickly?
Show answer
The explorers find a swampy basin full of hundreds of pterodactyls with eggs and young. While the scientists study them excitedly, one creature sees the men and cries out. The others answer, and soon the sky is full of wings. The pterodactyls attack with their beaks and wings. Malone is stabbed in the neck and Challenger is knocked down, so they must run. They escape only when Lord John fires his rifle and the attack weakens. 3. Explain what the damaged supplies at Fort Challenger suggest about another danger on the plateau.
Show answer
The crushed food tins and the broken ammunition box suggest that something strong entered the camp. It got in without breaking the thorn wall and left no clear footprints, so it was also clever, and it may have climbed through the large branch over the camp. This suggests a new danger that is different from the dinosaurs: an intelligent creature that can steal from them. 4. Analyze how Summerlee's reaction to the prehistoric animals shows a change in his role as the expedition's skeptic.
Show answer
Before this chapter, Summerlee doubted every piece of evidence. When he sees the iguanodons, his face changes "from doubt to amazement" and he admits, "You were right." After that he becomes as energetic as Challenger, and their arguments are now about how to classify the animals, not about whether they exist. However, he still keeps his careful scientific attitude, saying, "Let us not create a theory before we have evidence." 5. How does the chapter present the lost world as both wonderful and dangerous?
Show answer
The plateau is wonderful because it is full of strange plants, brilliant insects, peaceful iguanodons and a large shining lake. For the scientists it is "a scientific treasure". At the same time it is dangerous. An animal has been torn apart by a meat-eating dinosaur, pterodactyls attack the men, something breaks into their camp, and a huge shadow moves between the trees. As Malone says, the facts here have teeth. 6. Analyze the contrast between the scientists' excitement and Lord John's practical response during the pterodactyl encounter.
Show answer
Challenger and Summerlee see the swamp as a treasure and whisper excitedly about wings, teeth and nesting. Even after the attack, Summerlee, bleeding, calls the creatures "Remarkable". Lord John and Malone, however, notice the sharp beaks and watchful eyes. When the attack starts, Lord John shouts "Run!" and fires his rifle to save them. The contrast shows that curiosity drives the scientists, while Lord John thinks first about survival. 7. Evaluate the explorers' decision to continue studying the plateau while they are trapped instead of focusing only on escape.
Show answer
I think it was a sensible decision, as long as they stayed careful. They could not escape at once, because the bridge was gone and they had to wait for Zambo and the rope they had requested. Exploring also helped them look for an escape route, as Malone does when he climbs the tree. However, studying dangerous places such as the swamp put their lives at risk, so their curiosity sometimes went too far. 8. Evaluate their decision to approach the pterodactyl rookery. Were they careful enough for the level of danger? Explain.
Show answer
No, I do not think they were careful enough. They did crawl forward quietly and tried to withdraw without being seen. However, they went very close to hundreds of creatures with sharp beaks, protecting their eggs and young. When one saw them, they were attacked at once. Malone was stabbed in the neck, Challenger was knocked down and Summerlee was cut. The scientists' excitement made them stay too long.
2. JRE (Justify, Reasoning & Evidence) —
Justify: Yes, by the end of this chapter Challenger's main claim has been fully proved to the other explorers.
Reasoning: Challenger claimed that prehistoric animals still live on the isolated plateau. Earlier, the evidence was indirect and could be doubted. Now the explorers see living animals with their own eyes, again and again, so there is no longer room for doubt. However, the world outside still has not seen this proof.
Evidence: First, they all see a group of iguanodons, both adults and young, feeding in a glade, and Summerlee admits, "You were right." Second, they find a swamp full of hundreds of pterodactyls, the same creature as the wing bone in London. Finally, Malone says Summerlee is "now convinced that prehistoric life had survived".
- Justify:
Summerlee.
Justify: Scientific curiosity is shown as both a strength and a danger in this chapter.
Reasoning: Curiosity is a strength because it leads the explorers to important discoveries and gives them energy and hope while they are trapped. However, it becomes a danger when it makes them forget the risk around them. The chapter shows that curiosity must be balanced by caution.
Evidence: Curiosity leads to the discovery of the iguanodons, which proves Challenger's story. But at the swamp, the scientists whisper excitedly about wings and nesting while the creatures have sharp beaks, and the attack leaves Malone stabbed in the neck and Summerlee bleeding. Even then Summerlee calls them "Remarkable". By contrast, Lord John's caution keeps them alive, and the camp is guarded by two fires and a watch.
The iguanodons attack the explorers.
The explorers see the creature that broke into their camp.
Malone sees people near the caves.
- غلط: Zambo has left. صح: Zambo لسه تحت faithful to his promise، واللي رجعوا ناحية النهر هم بعض المرشدين بجوابات Malone.
