English

(Chapter Summary)

The explorers travel up the Amazon on a steam launch called the Esmeralda. Challenger makes everyone promise not to publish enough information for strangers to find the plateau. When the river becomes narrow, he sends the Esmeralda back. They continue by canoe with two frightened local guides, and later on foot when the water is too shallow. The journey is exhausting, and Challenger and Summerlee argue all the time.

On the ninth day on foot, they see a large grey flying creature. Challenger calls it a pterodactyl, Summerlee says it is a bird, and Lord John says he has never seen a bird shaped like that. The next day they see the red cliffs, exactly as Maple White drew them. Summerlee says this only proves that the cliffs exist.

They cannot find a way up the cliff. So they climb the separate rock tower and cut down its tree to make a bridge across the chasm. All four cross onto the plateau. Then the tree bridge falls. Gomez appears on the tower and shouts that Pedro Lopez was his brother and that Lord John killed him. Gomez disappears, but loyal Zambo stays below and sends them food and ammunition by rope. The explorers have reached the lost world, but now they cannot leave it.

Challenger: «pterodactyl!».
Maple White Land.

Chapter Summative —

1. Answer the following questions.

  1. 1. Explain why the explorers leave the Esmeralda and continue by canoe and later on foot.

    Show answer
They leave the Esmeralda because the tributary becomes narrower and there will soon be rapids, which a steam launch cannot pass. So Challenger sends it back to Manaos and they use canoes. Later the water becomes too shallow even for canoes, so they hide them and continue on foot, carrying their food, rifles and supplies.
  2. 2. Explain how the explorers use the tree on the rock tower to reach the plateau.

    Show answer
The main cliff is almost vertical, but Challenger notices that the separate rock tower stands close to it. The explorers climb the tower with a rope and reach the tree on top. Lord John suggests cutting it down in the right direction. After hours of work with axes, the tree falls across the chasm, with its upper branches on the plateau, and they cross it like a bridge.
  3. 3. Why does Gomez destroy the tree bridge after the explorers cross it?

    Show answer
Gomez wants revenge on Lord John. He shouts that Pedro Lopez was his brother and that Lord John killed him, and he says, "I have waited years for this." By pushing the tree from the tower after they cross, he traps them on the plateau, hoping that they will never come down.
  4. 4. How are Zambo and Gomez presented as contrasting examples of loyalty and betrayal?

    Show answer
Gomez is a hired man who pretends to be calm and helpful, but he secretly waits for the chance to destroy the bridge and leave the explorers to die. Zambo is also a hired man, but he remains loyal. As soon as Gomez is gone, he climbs the tower, asks, "Tell me what to do!", sends them food and ammunition by rope and promises to stay below. One man breaks their trust, while the other keeps it when it matters most.
  5. 5. Analyze how the sighting of the strange flying creature develops the conflict between evidence and scepticism.

    Show answer
When the grey creature flies past, each man reacts differently. Challenger immediately cries, "A pterodactyl!", which shows his certainty. Summerlee laughs and says it is "a large bird", which shows that he still refuses to accept the claim. Lord John, who is not a scientist, says he has never seen a bird shaped like that. His neutral view adds weight to the evidence, but the sighting is too short to end the argument, so the conflict continues.
  6. 6. Evaluate the explorers' decision to cross the tree bridge. Was the scientific goal worth the physical risk? Give reasons.

    Show answer
In my opinion, the scientific goal was worth the risk, but they made one serious mistake. They had travelled for weeks and searched for days without finding another way up, so the bridge was their only chance to test Challenger's claim. They crossed carefully, one by one. However, they did not think of protecting the bridge behind them, and Gomez used this chance to trap them. The risk to their lives was greater than they realised.

2. JRE (Justify, Reasoning & Evidence) —

Model JRE answer (1)138 words
Task: Does Zambo deserve to be considered one of the heroes of the expedition?

Justify: Yes, I strongly believe that Zambo deserves to be considered one of the heroes of the expedition.

Reasoning: After Gomez's betrayal, the four explorers are trapped on the plateau with no bridge and no known road down. At that moment they depend completely on someone below. Zambo could easily have left with the others, but he chooses to stay. A hero is not only a person who fights danger, but also a person who keeps his promise when it is hard.

Evidence: First, "Zambo had remained loyal" and climbed the opposite tower as soon as Gomez and the others were gone. Second, he shouted, "Tell me what to do!" and helped them pull food and ammunition across the gap with a thin rope. Finally, he promised to stay below and help them in any way he could.

Model JRE answer (2)135 words
Task: Do Lord John's past actions help explain Gomez's betrayal?

Justify: Yes, Lord John's past actions help to explain Gomez's betrayal, although they do not excuse it.

Reasoning: Lord John acted against Pedro Lopez's group to help workers who were treated unfairly. This was a brave and fair action, but it made him enemies. Gomez saw Lopez's end as a personal loss, so he waited for years for a chance to take revenge. The past explains his motive, but betraying people who trusted him is still wrong.

Evidence: In Chapter 3, Lord John says that his actions against Lopez made him "some loyal friends" and "some dangerous enemies". In this chapter Gomez shouts, "Think of Pedro Lopez. He was my brother." He pushes the tree from the tower, and the four explorers are left on a plateau surrounded by cliffs, "with no known road down".

Gomez.
  • غلط: Manuel destroys the bridge. Gomez.
They reach the plateau by climbing the main cliff.
Summerlee is fully convinced when he sees the cliffs. صح: قال "That proves the cliffs exist. Nothing more."
  • غلط: Lord John crosses first.
