The Lost World · Chapter 3: The Expedition Is Chosen
(Chapter Summary)
At the Zoological Institute, the lecturer mentions stories of prehistoric creatures surviving in remote places, and part of the audience laughs. Challenger stands up angrily. Professor Summerlee, a thin elderly scientist, challenges him to give the place and provide proof that can be tested. Challenger asks if Summerlee will test it himself, and Summerlee agrees. Challenger then asks for younger volunteers. Malone and Lord John Roxton, a famous explorer, stand up, and the three men are chosen as the investigating party.
Lord John invites Malone to his rooms and asks about his skills. Malone says he can learn what he does not know. Lord John tells him that he once helped local workers escape from a cruel rubber-trading group led by Pedro Lopez. Before leaving England, Malone visits Gladys, but he does not say he is going for her.
In Brazil the team hires Zambo, Gomez, Manuel and several Indigenous boatmen. Challenger's instructions must be opened at Manaos at noon on 15 July. When Lord John opens the envelope, the paper is blank. Then Challenger walks in. He has travelled secretly to guide them himself. The four explorers are very different, but they now share one question: is there really a lost world?

| proud، secretive (كتوم)، dramatic، confident | "There is nothing amusing about evidence." |
| sceptical (شكّاك)، honest، determined، sharp | "provide proof that can be tested" |
| experienced، calm، modest (مش بيتفشخر)، fair/brave | "I know the Amazon country" |
| interested in adventure | "Then you have found your chance." |

Chapter Summative —
1. Answer the following questions.
1. Explain why Professor Summerlee agrees to test Challenger's claims in person.
Show answer
Summerlee is a sceptical scientist who believes that a claim must be supported by proof that can be tested. When Challenger asks him whether he would be willing to test it himself, he cannot refuse without looking unfair. He agrees because he is honest and determined to discover the truth properly, even if it means a long and dangerous journey. 2. How do Malone and Lord John Roxton become members of the expedition?
Show answer
Challenger says that Summerlee should not travel alone and asks for younger volunteers. Malone stands up almost without deciding and says, "I volunteer." At almost the same time Lord John Roxton stands up and says that he knows the Amazon country. Challenger proposes that Summerlee, Roxton and Malone should form the party, and the motion is accepted. 3. Explain why Challenger sends a blank sheet of paper and then appears in Manaos himself.
Show answer
Challenger had secretly decided to guide the team himself. He believed that no written directions could be as reliable as his own memory. He kept his plan private because he did not want arguments, reporters or curious travellers following him. The blank paper kept the location secret and allowed him to make a dramatic entrance. 4. Analyze the contrast between Challenger and Summerlee. How might their different personalities affect the expedition?
Show answer
Challenger is proud, loud and completely sure that he is right, while Summerlee is thin, sharp and openly doubtful. Challenger wants people to accept his evidence, but Summerlee wants proof that can be tested. This contrast may cause arguments and tension during the journey, as Summerlee is already "horrified" to travel with Challenger. However, it may also help, because Summerlee's doubt will make the final proof stronger. 5. How do the four main members of the expedition bring different strengths to the team?
Show answer
Challenger knows the route and has seen the plateau before. Summerlee brings scientific knowledge and careful doubt, and he studies insects and plants on the way. Lord John brings experience of the Amazon, knowledge of the rivers and of "the language used by many local traders and guides", and skill in choosing men. Malone brings youth, energy and the ability to keep a written record for the Gazette. 6. Analyze how Malone's final conversation with Gladys before leaving England shows a change in his motivation.
Show answer
Malone wants to tell Gladys that he is doing it for her, but he remembers her words that a brave act done only to win approval is not true courage. So he only says, "I hope I can make good use of it." This shows that his motivation is changing. He is no longer acting only to impress Gladys. He is beginning to want the adventure for its own value. 7. Evaluate Malone's decision to volunteer publicly for the journey. Was it courageous, impulsive, or both? Explain.
Show answer
I think it was both. It was courageous because Challenger had clearly said that the journey would be difficult and dangerous, yet Malone stood up in front of everyone. However, it was also impulsive, because he says, "I do not remember deciding to stand." He acted on a sudden feeling, without asking whether he had the right skills, as Lord John later checks. 8. Evaluate Challenger's decision to hide his plan to join the expedition. Was his secrecy sensible or unnecessary? Give reasons.
Show answer
In my view, his secrecy was mostly sensible. It protected the location from reporters and curious travellers, and his memory was more reliable than written directions. It also avoided arguments before the journey. However, it was partly unnecessary and unfair, because the team travelled all the way to Manaos without knowing the truth, and the blank paper made Summerlee angry.
2. JRE (Justify, Reasoning & Evidence) —
Justify: Yes, I believe that forming a team with such different personalities was a wise decision, although it carries some risk.
Reasoning: A difficult journey needs many different skills, and no single person has all of them. The differences may cause arguments, but they also mean that each member can cover another member's weakness. Even the disagreement between the two scientists can help, because a claim that survives doubt becomes stronger.
Evidence: Lord John knows "the rivers, the language used by many local traders and guides", which could keep them alive. Summerlee is "openly doubtful" but determined to investigate properly, so he will test every piece of evidence. On the other hand, Summerlee is "horrified" at travelling with Challenger, which shows that the team may face tension.
Justify: Yes, Summerlee's scepticism is very valuable to the expedition.
Reasoning: Science should not accept a claim only because a famous man is sure of it. Someone in the team must question the evidence, so that the final result is fair and convincing to the world. Summerlee's doubts may slow things down, but they push the expedition towards real proof.
Evidence: At the meeting, he demands that Challenger "provide proof that can be tested", and he agrees to test it himself. During the preparations he remains "openly doubtful" but is "determined to investigate them properly", and Malone respects his honesty because he is "willing to risk a long journey to discover the truth".
Challenger is chosen as a member at the lecture.
The envelope had a map inside.
Malone tells Gladys he is going to South America for her.
They hired the men in Manaos. Manaos.

9. Who said it? "The scientific value of my company will more than compensate for any personal discomfort." What does it show?
Show answer
Challenger — it shows his pride and humour. 10. Explain why Challenger's map is still not enough to find the plateau.
Show answer
Because "the final destination was not marked" on it. Challenger still keeps the exact place in his memory only.
