Characters, Themes and Key Events
This lesson studies the characters, the themes (big ideas) and the key events of *The Lost World* (the Ministry reader, 10 chapters). For each character you will learn two or three traits (qualities) and the evidence from the story that proves them.
A trait is a quality of a person, such as *brave*, *proud* or *loyal*. Evidence is what the character says or does in the story that shows this trait.
- Lord John is brave and calm. For example, he walks across the tree bridge last "with a balance and calm" that Malone can hardly believe.
- Gomez is treacherous (خاين). He pushes the tree bridge down and traps the explorers.
1) Edward Malone — الراوي (the narrator)
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| ambitious / wants a challenge | عايز تحدي ويثبت نفسه | After Gladys's words, he asks McArdle for a dangerous assignment (Ch 1). |
| clever but dishonest at first | ذكي بس استخدم الكدب | He pretends to be a student of science to meet Challenger (Ch 1). |
| fair / honest | عادل وبيعترف بغلطه | He tells the policeman "It was partly my fault" and will not press charges (Ch 2). |
| proud and sometimes reckless | عنده كبرياء وأحيانًا متهور | He leaves Fort Challenger alone at night, and "pride kept me moving" (Ch 6). |
| brave / grows more mature | شجاع وبيكبر وينضج | He goes back into danger with Lord John to rescue his friends (Ch 6–7). |
2) Professor George Edward Challenger —
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| bad-tempered / violent | عصبي وبيضرب | He throws reporters out of his house and fights Malone at their first meeting (Ch 1–2). |
| brilliant / certain | عبقري ومتأكد من كلامه | "I do not believe," he says. "I know." (Ch 2) |
| proud | مغرور | When Summerlee says "You were right", he replies, "Of course I was right." (Ch 5) |
| secretive / loves surprises | كتوم وبيحب المفاجآت | He sends a blank sheet of paper, then walks into the room at Manaos (Ch 3). |
| inventive / determined | مبتكر ومُصِرّ | He builds a balloon to escape and brings the living pterodactyl to London (Ch 9–10). |
3) Professor Summerlee —
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| sceptical | بيشك ومش بيصدق بسهولة | At the lecture he asks for "proof that can be tested" (Ch 3), and he calls the flying creature "A large bird" (Ch 4). |
| honest / fair-minded | أمين ومنصف | When he sees the iguanodons, he says, "You were right." (Ch 5) |
| argumentative | بيحب الجدال | He and Challenger argue all through the journey (Ch 4). |
| a true witness | بقى شاهد على الحقيقة | In London he gives the main report as a witness, not a sceptic (Ch 10). |
4) Lord John Roxton —
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| brave / calm | شجاع وهادي في الأزمات | He crosses the tree bridge last, with great balance and calm (Ch 4). |
| has a sense of justice | بيحب العدل | He once helped local workers escape from Pedro Lopez's cruel rubber-trading group (Ch 3). |
| practical / a leader in danger | عملي وبيقود في الخطر | He shoots the ape chief and covers the retreat with accurate shooting (Ch 7). |
| careful | حذر | He keeps the camp separate from the Accala caves (Ch 8). |
| clever with a secret | ذكي وكتوم | He secretly collects diamonds from the blue clay in the pterodactyl swamp (Ch 8–10). |
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| admires courage | بتحترم الشجاعة | She says she loves "a man who has done something brave" (Ch 1). |
| wise about courage | عندها فكرة عميقة عن الشجاعة | She says a truly brave man does not act just to impress someone (Ch 1). |
| changes her mind | غيرت رأيها | She marries William Potts, an ordinary man, and says she perhaps wanted "a quieter life" (Ch 10). |
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| McArdle: experienced / supportive | خبير وبيدّي فرصة | He gives Malone the job: "If you can get through the front door." (Ch 1) |
| Tarp Henry: helpful friend | صاحب بيساعد | He tells Malone not to mention newspapers and finds Challenger's latest paper (Ch 1). |
7) Maple White —
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| the first witness | أول شاهد | His sketchbook shows the red cliffs, the rock tower and a stegosaurus-like animal (Ch 2). |
| brave traveller | مسافر شجاع | He reached a remote village alone "after terrible hardship" and died there (Ch 2). |
Maple White Land.
8) Zambo —
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| loyal | مخلص | After the betrayal he climbs the rock tower and shouts, "Tell me what to do!" (Ch 4) |
| dependable | يُعتمد عليه | He stays at his camp below for weeks: "I stay here!" (Ch 8) |
| cheerful / caring | بشوش وبيحبهم | He meets them with a rescue party: "I knew you would come back!" (Ch 9) |
9) Gomez —
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| treacherous / deceitful | خاين ومخادع | He works for the team while hiding that he is Pedro Lopez's brother (Ch 4). |
| revengeful | بيحب الانتقام | He pushes the tree bridge down: "I have waited years for this." (Ch 4) |
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| strong and clever | أقوى من البشر وأذكيا | They drop from the trees, use clubs and vines, and capture the professors (Ch 6). |
| cruel | قساة | They throw Accala prisoners from a cliff in a cruel ceremony (Ch 7). |
11) The Accala and Maretas —
(Evidence) |
|---|---|---|
| grateful / generous | ممتنين وكرماء | They welcome the explorers and give them shelter in their caves (Ch 7). |
| want protection | عايزين حد يحميهم | They refuse to help the explorers leave because they want them as protectors (Ch 8). |
| Maretas: kind and brave | Maretas: طيب وشجاع | He secretly shows Malone the hidden passage out (Ch 9). |
(Themes)
A theme is a big idea or message that runs through the whole story. It is not one event. It is what the story makes us think about.
|---|---|---|---|
| Evidence vs belief | الدليل قصاد التصديق | الكلام الغريب محتاج دليل قوي علشان الناس تصدقه | Challenger says "I know", Summerlee asks for proof, and only the living pterodactyl convinces London. |
| True courage | الشجاعة الحقيقية | الشجاعة مش إنك تبان بطل، لكن إنك تساعد اللي محتاجك | Malone's solo night walk vs going back with Lord John to rescue his friends. |
| Teamwork | العمل كفريق | كل واحد عنده قوة مختلفة، ومع بعض بينجحوا | Lord John's shooting, the scientists' knowledge, Zambo's loyalty and Maretas's passage. |
| Loyalty and betrayal | الإخلاص والخيانة | الفرق بين اللي بيقف معاك واللي بيغدر بيك | Zambo stays below to help, while Gomez traps the explorers. |
| Curiosity and discovery | الفضول والاكتشاف | حب المعرفة بيخلي الإنسان يواجه الخطر | The scientists study the pterodactyl swamp even while they are attacked. |
| Personal growth | النضج والتغيير | اللي بتكسبه من نفسك أهم من الشهرة والحب والفلوس | Malone no longer needs Gladys's approval and chooses a new adventure. |
ولاحظ إن Malone نفسه ماكانش مبسوط بالمعركة ("I found little joy in it")، وإن Summerlee قال: «We did not come here to join a war».
- One theme of the novel is evidence versus belief. People only accept Challenger's claim when they see a living pterodactyl.Theme +
- The novel contrasts loyalty and betrayal: Zambo stays to help, while Gomez traps the explorers.
- The story shows that true courage means helping others. Malone goes back into danger because his friends need him.
- Teamwork saves the expedition. No single explorer could have escaped alone.

Lord John is brave.» ← ✓ «Lord John is brave. For example, he shoots the ape chief to save Summerlee.»
- ✗ تقول theme كأنه حدث: «The theme is Gomez pushing the tree.» ← ✓ «The theme is betrayal. For example, Gomez pushes the tree.»
Pedro Lopez.
Challenger is determined.
For example / This is shown when he builds a balloon to escape from the plateau.
This shows that he never gives up, even when his plan seems mad.
This shows that… / This suggests that… / For instance… / As a result…
- Q: Is Summerlee's scepticism necessary for the scientific credibility of the expedition?
- A (J): Yes, his scepticism is necessary.
- A (R): A good scientist does not accept a claim without proof, so when a sceptic changes his mind, people trust the result more.
- A (E): At the lecture he asks for "proof that can be tested", on the plateau he says "You were right", and in London he gives the main report as a witness.
Zambo and Gomez are both men hired at Para to help the expedition, but they are complete opposites. Gomez is treacherous. He hides the fact that Pedro Lopez was his brother and waits for his chance to take revenge on Lord John. When the explorers cross onto the plateau, he pushes the tree bridge down and leaves them trapped. Zambo, on the other hand, is loyal and dependable. Instead of leaving, he climbs the rock tower, helps the men pull food and ammunition across, and stays below for weeks.
This contrast shows the theme of loyalty and betrayal. The writer suggests that a person's true character appears in a moment of danger. Gomez chooses hatred, while Zambo chooses faithfulness, and his loyalty helps to save the expedition.
- بدأنا بالتشابه (both men hired at Para) وبعدين الاختلاف (opposites).
- استخدمنا كلمات المقارنة: but, on the other hand, while, instead of.
- ختمنا بالـ theme (loyalty and betrayal) ورسالة الكاتب، وده المطلوب في «What does the contrast show?».
