Listening for Main Ideas and Specific Information
When you listen, you need two different skills: listening for the main idea (the big message of the whole recording) and listening for specific information (small exact details such as numbers, names, dates and reasons).
في الكتاب المهارة دي بتيجي في Unit 2 (الـ research report عن الـ screen time والتسجيل عن الرياضة)، وUnit 4 (الكتاب بيقول: «extract specific information from an audio broadcast» زي The Food Waste Minute، والراديو عن الاستهلاك أونلاين)، وUnit 5 (البودكاست عن الطاقة: «extract key information, including main ideas, specific details»).
Main idea = What is the whole recording about, and what is the speaker's message? Specific information = one exact fact that answers *how many, when, who, where, which, why*.
| Main idea (الفكرة الأساسية) | Specific information (معلومة محددة) | |
|---|---|---|
| السؤال بيقول | main purpose, main message, mainly about, key message, best title | How many? What percentage? When? Who? Which? Name… |
According to / for example |
Today we're looking at…».
So, the key message is… / In the end… / The first step is…».
- The goal is not to stop using screens but to find a healthy balance.
- Teenagers spend an average of seven hours a day on screens outside school.
- In short, enjoying sport matters more than winning.main idea: In short
- The club meets every Thursday at five o'clock.specific information:
- Small changes at home can cut food waste by a third.
- خلي بالك من التصحيح: المتكلم ساعات يقول رقم وبعدين يصححه: «about thirty… actually, closer to fifty».
|---|---|---|
| reduce | cut / lower / bring down | يقلل |
| increase | rise / go up / grow | يزيد |
| half | 50 per cent / one in two | النص |
| a quarter | 25 per cent / one in four | الربع |
| teenagers | young people / students aged 14 to 17 | المراهقين |
| advantages | benefits / the good side | المميزات |
| problems | challenges / obstacles / risks | المشاكل |
| cheaper | costs less / more affordable | أرخص |
- ✗ تكتب 30% وهو قال «thirty per cent of the boys» والسؤال عن girls ← ✓ اسمع الرقم بتاع مين.
1: Research report – Unit 2
1: Weekends Off-Screen: A Research Report
Good morning. In this report, we look at what happens when teenagers spend their weekends away from screens. Our aim is not to blame technology, but to understand how young people can find a healthier balance.
The study took place in three secondary schools in Mansoura and lasted eight weeks. Two hundred and forty students aged fifteen to seventeen took part. Before the study, they spent an average of six and a half hours a day on their phones at weekends.
During the study, half of the students agreed to a simple rule: no phones between ten in the morning and six in the evening on Fridays. Instead, they chose offline activities, such as football, drawing, helping in family businesses or visiting grandparents.
What did the researchers find? First, the off-screen group reported better sleep. About sixty per cent said they fell asleep more quickly on Friday nights. Second, they described their mood as calmer. Several students said they no longer felt the need to check what their friends were doing every few minutes. Third, and this surprised the researchers, the students did not do worse in their schoolwork. In fact, their homework marks improved slightly.
However, not everything was easy. In the first two weeks, about one third of the students broke the rule at least once. Many said the hardest part was feeling left out of group chats.
So, what is the key message? Screens are part of modern life, and they can be useful. But a regular break, even one day a week, can give teenagers more time to rest, move and connect with the people around them.
1: Main purpose (MCQ)
What is the speaker's main purpose?
a. To prove that phones should be banned for teenagers.
b. To report the results of a study on screen-free weekends and suggest a balance.
c. To advertise offline hobbies such as drawing.
d. To explain how group chats work.
الإجابة: b. المقدمة قالت «Our aim is not to blame technology, but to understand… a healthier balance»، والخاتمة رجعت لنفس الفكرة. a فيها banned (متطرفة وعكس كلامه)، وc وd تفاصيل صغيرة اتذكرت مرة واحدة.
2: Specific information (Identify)
How many students took part in the study?
240 students (two hundred and forty).
3: Listen again and fill in the blanks
About sixty per cent said they fell asleep more ________ on Friday nights.
2: Radio broadcast – Unit 4
2: Smart Shopper – Radio Programme
Welcome back to Smart Shopper, the programme about the choices we make with our money. Today: online flash sales. You've seen them. A red timer on the screen says 'Only 2 hours left!' and suddenly you feel you must buy now.
Why does this work so well? Psychologists call it urgency. When we think time is running out, we stop comparing prices carefully. A study of online shoppers found that people spent around thirty per cent more when a countdown clock was shown. Another trick is social proof: messages like '120 people bought this today'. They make us believe that, if everyone is buying it, it must be good.
We asked listeners to send us their stories. Salma, a student from Tanta, told us she bought three pairs of trainers during a midnight sale. 'I only needed one pair,' she said. 'The timer made me panic.'
So how can you protect yourself? Our money expert, Mr Hany Saad, has a simple rule: wait twenty-four hours. If you still want the item tomorrow, and it's still within your budget, then buy it. He also suggests turning off shopping app notifications, especially at night.
The main thing to remember is that a sale is only a saving if you really needed the item. After the news, we'll talk about second-hand clothes markets. Stay with us.
لاحظ: الـ main idea اتقالت في الأول (online flash sales) واتلخصت في الآخر («a sale is only a saving if you really needed the item»). والـ specific information متوزعة في النص: 30%، 120 people، Tanta، three pairs، 24 hours.

- BBC World Service – news summary:
- Main idea =
- التسجيل غالبًا بيقول المعلومة بكلام تاني (synonyms): cut = reduce، one in four = a quarter.
