Concession Language
إزاي تعترف بالرأي التاني وبعدين ترد عليه باستخدام although / despite / while it is true that / admittedly، وتستخدمها في الكتابة المتوازنة.
الدرس ده عن إيه؟
Concession means admitting that the other side has a point before giving your own view. Concession language (although, despite, while it is true that, admittedly…) shows the writer is fair and aware of other opinions.
الدرس ده عن إزاي تعترف بنقطة صح عند اللي مختلف معاك، وبعدين ترد عليه وتقول رأيك. زي ما تقول لصاحبك: «ماشي، عندك حق إن المتحف بعيد… بس الزيارة تستاهل». الكلام ده بيخليك تبان عاقل ومتوازن، مش بتشوف ناحية واحدة بس.
في الكتاب المهارة دي في Unit 3: Echoes of the Past (صفحة 86) جوه Writing in Action: Concession Clauses مع أمثلة عن المتحف المصري الكبير (GEM)، والكتابة المطلوبة discursive paragraph فيها concession clauses (at least 3). وبترجع في Unit 6 (persuasive email و«Concede: Although…» في بوست الـ media club)، وUnit 7 («Although some people believe…, I think…» و«Concede: Although some quick successes are genuine…»)، وUnit 9 (discursive essay، والمقال عن الـ Buddy Bench فيه «Admittedly, …»).
الفكرة ببساطة: «صحيح… بس»
A concession has two parts: (1) the concession = the point you admit, and (2) the main idea = your answer or opinion, which is the stronger part.
أي جملة concession فيها نصّين:
| الجزء | بيعمل إيه؟ | مثال |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Concession (الاعتراف) | بتعترف بنقطة الطرف التاني. ده الجزء الأضعف في جملتك. | Although the GEM is very large, |
| 2. Main clause (الرد / رأيك) | رأيك إنت. ده الجزء الأقوى واللي القارئ يفتكره. | visitors can find their way easily with the help of guides. |
خلي بالك: رأيك دايمًا بييجي في الجزء التاني (الـ main clause). لو قلبتهم المعنى بيتغير! قارن:
- Although online tours are convenient, visiting in person is a unique experience.رأي الكاتب: الزيارة الحقيقية أحسن.
- Although visiting in person is a unique experience, online tours are convenient.رأي الكاتب هنا: الجولة أونلاين أحسن. نفس الكلام والمعنى اتقلب!
أدوات الـ concession (جدول الكتاب + زيادات مهمة)
Each expression has its own grammar. The most important difference: some are followed by a clause (subject + verb), others by a noun phrase or -ing.
| Expression | Grammar (بعدها إيه؟) | Example | ملاحظة |
|---|---|---|---|

| Admittedly, …; however, … | جملة كاملة + ; however, + جملة كاملة | Admittedly, building such a museum takes many years; however, the result is worth the wait. | الـ ; هنا بتربط جملتين مستقلتين |

| …, yet … | جملة + yet + جملة | One small garden cannot feed a whole town, yet it teaches children where food comes from. | yet = بس / ومع ذلك (Unit 9 بيستخدم Yet بنفس الفكرة) |
أهم مقارنة: Although ولا Despite؟
Although / Even though + subject + verb. Despite / In spite of + noun / -ing. Both mean the same thing.
السؤال ده بييجي كتير جدًا. القاعدة السهلة: بص على اللي بعد الفراغ:
| بعد الفراغ | استخدم | Example |
|---|---|---|
| فاعل + فعل (it was, people think) | Although / Even though / Though | Although it was raining, we visited Karnak. |
| اسم (the rain, its size) | Despite / In spite of | Despite the rain, we visited Karnak. |
| فعل بـ -ing (being, having) | Despite / In spite of | Despite being tired, we visited Karnak. |
| the fact that + clause | Despite / In spite of | Despite the fact that it was raining, we visited Karnak. |
إزاي تحوّل من Although لـ Despite (سؤال إعادة صياغة):
- Although the river is polluted, fishermen still depend on it.الأصل: although + clause.
- Despite the pollution of the river, fishermen still depend on it.طريقة 1: حوّلنا الجملة لاسم (pollution).
- Despite the river being polluted, fishermen still depend on it.طريقة 2: اسم + -ing.
- Despite the fact that the river is polluted, fishermen still depend on it.طريقة 3 (الأسهل والأضمن): the fact that + نفس الجملة.
- Although she was nervous, Nour played the violin beautifully. → Despite being nervous, Nour played the violin beautifully.لما الفاعل واحد في الجملتين (she = Nour) ممكن نستخدم -ing على طول.
الترقيم: الفاصلة والـ semicolon
Put a comma after the concession clause when it comes first. Use a semicolon before however / nevertheless only when it joins two complete sentences.
- لو الـ concession في الأول: حط فاصلة بعدها: Although it is expensive, the trip is worth it.
- لو جت في الآخر: غالبًا مفيش فاصلة: The trip is worth it although it is expensive.
- however / nevertheless مش زي although: دي بتربط جملتين كاملتين. يا تبدأ بيها جملة جديدة: …many years. However, the result… يا تستخدم semicolon يربط الجملتين: …many years; however, the result… وبعدها فاصلة دايمًا.
- ✗ متكتبش: Many years, however the result… (فاصلة بس بين جملتين كاملتين غلط).
استخدامها في الكتابة: Concede → Counter → Evidence
In discursive and persuasive writing, a strong concession follows three steps: concede (admit the other view), counter (give your answer), support (add evidence).
| Step | يعني إيه؟ | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Concede | اعترف بالنقطة | Admittedly, wildlife corridors take land that farmers could use; |
| 2. Counter | رد بقوة | however, they protect species that keep the whole ecosystem healthy. |
| 3. Evidence (E of JRE) | دليل أو مثال | For example, corridors have already helped elephants and wolves move safely between habitats. |
ده مرتبط بالـ JRE بتاع الكتاب: الـ concession بتخلي الـ Justify بتاعك أقوى، لأنك بتورّي إنك فكرت في الرأي التاني وبرضه رأيك صامد.

Model: discursive paragraph (150-180 words)
Many people have different opinions about the role of social media in recording our history. On the one hand, some people believe that social media is the best way to share heritage, because a discovery in Saqqara can reach millions of viewers within minutes. Admittedly, this speed helps young people feel proud of their past; however, speed is not the same as accuracy. Although a short video can show a new tomb, it rarely explains the objects or the dates correctly. On the other hand, professional archaeologists record every detail and check it carefully. Despite being slower, their reports remain reliable for future generations, while many posts are deleted or changed. While it is true that experts cannot reach every audience, they can work with social media rather than compete with it. In my opinion, a balanced approach may be the best solution. To sum up, social media can spread heritage widely, but only professional documentation can protect its truth.
- Topic sentence: «Many people have different opinions about…» = نفس الجملة الافتتاحية اللي الكتاب اقترحها.
