Used to / Would (Past Habits)
We use used to and would to talk about things that happened again and again in the past but do not happen now. They are useful for describing how a hobby began before it changed into something else.
Used to / Would (Past Habits) Presentation Task («I used to…»)، وفي الـ Writing Task بتاع الـ proposal اللي لازم يكون فيه used to أو would مرة على الأقل.
used to = a past habit or state that is no longer true. We often contrast it with the present simple for now.
- She used to bake for fun. Now she bakes for customers too.
- I used to draw comics every day after school.
(NOT for states).
|---|---|---|---|
| Affirmative (إثبات) | subject + used to + verb | She used to spend Fridays baking alone. |
| Negative (نفي) | subject + didn't use to + verb | He didn't use to take orders from strangers. |
| Question (سؤال) | Did + subject + use to + verb? | Did you use to sell your drawings online? |
| would (أفعال متكررة) | subject + would + verb | She would pipe wonky flowers onto cupcakes every weekend. |
| would نفي | subject + wouldn't + verb | On busy days, he wouldn't stop for lunch.
| Contrast with now | used to … . Now + present simple | She used to bake for fun. Now she bakes for customers. | |
did خدت الـ «d» بتاعة الماضي، فـ used ترجع use: ✓ didn't use to / Did you use to …? ✗ didn't used to. I played ← I didn't play.
Habits / actions are things we do (play, bake, draw, visit). States are situations or feelings (be, have, live, like, love, know, believe, own). used to works with both. would works with actions only.
| النوع | أفعال زي | used to؟ | would؟ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Action / habit (فعل بيتعمل) | bake, draw, practise, visit, play, repair, walk | ✓ أيوه | ✓ أيوه |
| State (حالة أو إحساس أو ملكية) | be, have (= own), live, like, love, hate, know, believe, own, want | ✓ أيوه | ✗ لأ |
- When I was ten, I used to be very shy. ✗ I would be very shy.
- Omar used to have a small workshop in his bedroom.have هنا بمعنى «يمتلك» (حالة)، فـ would ماتنفعش.
- Every Thursday, Hassan would arrive early to prepare the chess boards. وused to كمان صح.
- We used to live near the old pottery workshop.live حالة، فـ used to بس.
- My grandfather would tell us stories about his carpentry work.
- Salma used to love painting, but she lost interest during exams.love إحساس (state)، فـ used to مش would.
(When I was young… / Every Friday… / In those days…).
used to ولا Past Simple؟
Use the past simple for one action, or for actions with an exact number of times or a fixed period. Use used to for repeated habits that have now stopped.
|---|---|---|
| I visited the Khan El-Khalili workshop last week. | ✓ | مرة واحدة ← past simple. |
| I used to visit the workshop every summer. | ✓ | |
| ✗ I used to visit the workshop three times. |
| She practised the violin for five years.
(When I was young, I played football every day).
ماتلخبطش: used to ≠ be used to ≠ get used to
used to + verb = past habit. be used to + verb-ing / noun = be familiar with something (it is normal for you). get used to + verb-ing / noun = become familiar with something.
|---|---|---|
| used to + verb (المصدر) | كان بيعمل زمان (عادة قديمة) | I used to work alone. |
| be used to + verb-ing | متعود على (الحاجة دي عادية بالنسباله) | I am used to working in a team now. |
| get used to + verb-ing | بقى متعود / اتعود على حاجة جديدة | She got used to waking up early for her internship. |
- Mariam used to work at home. Now she is used to working with a large team.
- At first, the new volunteers found it hard, but they soon got used to teaching younger students.
✗ I am used to work late. ✓ I am used to working late. بعد be used to الفعل يبقى -ing، لأن to هنا حرف جر.

In a presentation or a proposal, used to shows the situation before, and the present simple shows the situation now. This makes the change clear to your listener or reader.
في الـ Presentation Task الكتاب بيدّيك جملة «I used to…». وفي الـ proposal لازم تستخدم used to أو would.
Our school used to have no space for students who enjoy fixing things. Broken bicycles and old fans would end up in the rubbish, and nobody would try to repair them. Now, many students are interested in repair skills, so we recommend starting a weekly Repair Club.
لاحظ: used to have (حالة: ماكانش عندنا مكان) ← بعدها would end up / would try (أفعال متكررة) ← بعدها are (دلوقتي) ← وبعدين الـ recommendation.

- ✗ Omar uses to repair radios. ← ✓ Omar used to repair radios.
- ✗ She is used to bake every day now. ← ✓ She is used to baking … أو She bakes every day now.
- الفعل حالة (be, have, live, like, know)؟ استبعد would.
- بعد would وused to الفعل مصدر (bake, spend, decorate).
