  • This is a full practice test for Cambridge Lower Secondary Science, Stage 8: two papers that cover the whole Stage 8 curriculum.
  • Biology: joints and muscles (8Bs.01), blood (8Bs.02), breathing and gas exchange (8Bs.03, 8Bs.04), diet, energy stores and lifestyle (8Bp.01 to 8Bp.03), aerobic respiration (8Bp.04, 8Bp.05), ecosystems, bioaccumulation and invasive species (8Be.01 to 8Be.03)
  • Chemistry: atoms (8Cm.01 to 8Cm.03), purity (8Cm.04), concentration (8Cp.01), chromatography (8Cp.02), word equations and energy changes (8Cc.01, 8Cc.02), reactivity of metals and inert substances (8Cc.03, 8Cc.06), impure products and solubility (8Cc.04, 8Cc.05)
  • Physics: speed and distance–time graphs (8Pf.01, 8Pf.02), forces and moments (8Pf.03, 8Pf.04), pressure, particles and diffusion (8Pf.05 to 8Pf.07), reflection, refraction, dispersion and colour (8Ps.01 to 8Ps.04), magnetic fields and electromagnets (8Pe.01 to 8Pe.03)
  • Earth and Space: the Earth's magnetic field and resources (8ESp.01, 8ESp.02), climate and weather (8ESc.01 to 8ESc.03), galaxies and asteroids (8ESs.01, 8ESs.02)
  • Thinking and Working Scientifically: analogies, testable hypotheses, variables, equipment, risk, repeat readings and means, anomalous results, trends, conclusions and biased sources

Before you start

  • What this is: an end-of-Stage-8 practice test written in the style of Cambridge Lower Secondary tests. The Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint itself is taken at the end of Stage 9; this test checks your Stage 8 science and builds the base for Checkpoint. Every question is new. The contexts are a hospital and a blood test, a food factory, a car journey on the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road, a swimming pool, a photographer's camera and a solar farm near Aswan.
  • Two papers, like the Cambridge Stage 8 Science tests: Paper 1 — 45 minutes, 50 marks. Paper 2 — 45 minutes, 50 marks. That is 100 marks in total. The timer here runs for 45 minutes for each paper.
  • Calculator: the cover of the real Checkpoint Science Paper 1 says "You may use a calculator." For Paper 2, and for your school's own Stage 8 tests, check with your teacher. The numbers in this test are simple, so you can also work them out by hand.
  • Equipment: a black or dark blue pen and an HB pencil for any diagrams or graphs. A ruler helps you read graphs accurately. In the real test you answer on the question paper and no additional materials are needed.
  • Write on paper first if you like. You can also print the question paper (PDF link above the questions), do it like a real exam, then type your answers in.
  • Look at the marks: [1] = one point; [2] = two separate points, or a calculation with working. For a 2-mark calculation, show your working: you can get 1 mark for the right method even if the final answer is wrong. Always give the unit when it is not printed for you.
  • How marking works here: answers you type (a word, a letter or a number) or choose (multiple choice) are checked automatically. Written explanations are marked by you: when you finish, compare your answer with the mark scheme shown and give yourself the marks honestly.
  • Your score is a practice score, not an official Cambridge result. As a rough guide, Cambridge's indicative minimum percentages for the Lower Secondary Science Progression Tests are: Basic 15%, Aspiring 25%, Good 40%, High 55%, Outstanding 70%.

After the test
  • Mark honestly. For each written answer, find the marking points in the mark scheme. Give yourself a mark only if your answer says the same science, even in different words.
  • Make a mistakes list. For every lost mark, write the question number, the topic and the reason: did not know it / misread the question / only one point for a [2] / no working / no unit / read the graph or table wrongly.
  • Biology: Paper 1 Q1 → *Blood and Its Components*; Paper 1 Q2 → *Joints and Antagonistic Muscles*; Paper 1 Q3 → *Breathing, Gas Exchange and Diffusion in the Lungs*; Paper 1 Q4 and Paper 2 Q2 → *A Balanced Diet, Energy Stores and Lifestyle*; Paper 1 Q5 → *Aerobic Respiration*; Paper 1 Q6–Q7 → *Ecosystems, Bioaccumulation and Invasive Species*.
  • Chemistry: Paper 1 Q8 → *The Structure of the Atom*; Paper 1 Q9 and Paper 2 Q3 → *Purity, Concentration and Chromatography*; Paper 2 Q1 → *Word Equations, Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions*; Paper 2 Q4 → *Impure Products and Solubility of Salts*; Paper 2 Q5 → *The Reactivity of Metals*.
  • Physics: Paper 2 Q6 → *Speed and Distance–Time Graphs* and *Balanced and Unbalanced Forces, and Moments*; Paper 2 Q7 → *Balanced and Unbalanced Forces, and Moments*; Paper 1 Q10 and Paper 2 Q9 → *Pressure, Particles and Diffusion*; Paper 1 Q11 and Paper 2 Q8 → *Reflection and Refraction* and *Dispersion and Colour*; Paper 1 Q12 and Paper 2 Q13 → *Magnetic Fields and Electromagnets*.
  • Earth and Space: Paper 2 Q10 and Q13(b) → *The Earth's Magnetic Field and Earth's Resources*; Paper 2 Q11 → *Climate, Weather and Climate Change*; Paper 2 Q12 → *Galaxies and Asteroids*.
  • Investigation skills (Paper 1 Q8(c), Q12 and Paper 2 Q2(e), Q9) → *Thinking and Working Scientifically: Models, Investigations and Analysing Results*. For how the real tests work, see *Stage 8 Science: The Tests and How to Prepare*.
  • Then try again: a week later, redo only the questions you lost marks on, without looking at the answers. When you are ready, try another practice test.
