Stage 8 Science — Practice Test 1

A full, timed end-of-Stage-8 science practice test in Cambridge style: two 45-minute papers of 50 marks each, covering biology, chemistry, physics, Earth and space and investigation skills, with a mark scheme and worked solution for every question.

Before you start

  • This is a full practice end-of-Stage-8 science test written in the style of Cambridge Lower Secondary. The Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint itself is taken at the end of Stage 9; this test checks the Stage 8 work that Checkpoint builds on.
  • There are two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Each paper lasts 45 minutes and is worth 50 marks (100 marks in total). Both papers mix biology, chemistry, physics, Earth and space, and thinking and working scientifically.
  • Calculator: Paper 1 allows a calculator, as the Cambridge Checkpoint Paper 1 cover says "You may use a calculator". Cambridge has not published the calculator rule for Paper 2, so check with your teacher; every calculation here can be done with careful working.
  • Equipment: a black or dark blue pen, an HB pencil for diagrams and graphs, a ruler and an eraser. No other materials are needed.
  • Answer all questions. The number of marks for each part is shown in brackets [ ]. In questions that say "Show your working", write every step: you can earn a mark for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.
  • You may write your answers on paper first if you like. You can also download and print the question paper and do the whole test on paper.
  • How marking works here: typed answers (numbers, single words and multiple choice) are checked automatically. Written answers (explain, describe, suggest) are marked by you, using the mark scheme shown at the end. Be strict with yourself, just as a real examiner would be.
  • Your score is a practice score to help you prepare. It is not an official Cambridge result.

After the test
  • Read the worked solution and the mark scheme for every question, including the ones you got right.
  • For each written answer, compare your words with the mark scheme point by point. If your answer was only half right, write the full answer again in your notebook.
  • Make a list of the topic tags of the questions you lost marks on, then revisit those lessons. Biology: "Joints and Antagonistic Muscles", "Blood and Its Components", "Breathing, Gas Exchange and Diffusion in the Lungs", "A Balanced Diet, Energy Stores and Lifestyle", "Aerobic Respiration", "Ecosystems, Bioaccumulation and Invasive Species".
  • Chemistry: "The Structure of the Atom", "Purity, Concentration and Chromatography", "Word Equations, Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions", "The Reactivity of Metals", "Impure Products and Solubility of Salts".
  • Physics: "Speed and Distance–Time Graphs", "Balanced and Unbalanced Forces, and Moments", "Pressure, Particles and Diffusion", "Reflection and Refraction", "Dispersion and Colour", "Magnetic Fields and Electromagnets".
  • Earth and space: "The Earth's Magnetic Field and Earth's Resources", "Climate, Weather and Climate Change", "Galaxies and Asteroids". For the investigation questions (variables, anomalous results, means, risks, improvements), revisit "Thinking and Working Scientifically: Models, Investigations and Analysing Results".
  • Check your calculations: did you write the formula, show the working and give the unit? Many marks are lost on missing units.
  • A week later, try Practice Test 2 under timed conditions and compare your scores.
