Before you start
This is a complete practice ACT Reading section in the enhanced ACT format: 40 minutes for 4 passages with 9 questions each (36 questions). The passages are a literary narrative (memoir), a pair of natural science passages, a humanities passage, and a social science passage with a small table. In the real test, 27 of the 36 questions are scored and one passage is unscored; you will not know which one. Here all 36 questions count, so treat every passage seriously. All passages and questions are original.
- Sit somewhere quiet with no phone and no dictionary. Keep scrap paper for your passage map.
- Start the timer and do not pause it. Aim for about 10 minutes per passage (read for about 3–4 minutes, then answer).
- There is no penalty for wrong answers on the ACT, so answer every question, even if you have to guess when time is short.
- If a passage is taking too long, guess on the hardest question, mark it, and move on. Come back only if time is left.
- Your result here is a practice percentage, not an official ACT scaled score (1–36).
- Read every explanation, including the ones for questions you got right: check that you chose the answer for the right reason.
- List your wrong answers by category (Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas) and by trap (too extreme, half-right, reversed, not in the passage, wrong paragraph).
- Weak on main ideas, details and inferences? Go back to Key Ideas and Details. Weak on purpose, word meaning and structure? Review Craft and Structure. Weak on paired passages, tables and evidence? Review Integration of Knowledge and Ideas.
- If you ran out of time, re-read ACT Reading Strategy: Read Fast, Answer Smart and practise the 10-minute-per-passage plan.
- Wait a few days, then take ACT Reading — Practice Test 1 (if you have not yet) under the same timed conditions and compare.
