Before you start

This is a full-length practice test for the Reading section of the enhanced ACT. The real section has 36 questions in 40 minutes. In the real test, 27 questions are scored (three passages of 9 questions each) and the other passage is unscored, but you will not know which one, so you must treat every passage as if it counts. In this practice test, all 36 questions count.

PassageTypeQuestions
ILiterary Narrative (original fiction)1–9
IISocial Science10–18
IIIHumanities — paired passages A and B19–27
IVNatural Science (with a data table)28–36
  1. Sit in a quiet place, put your phone away and keep scrap paper and a pencil ready.
  2. Do the whole section in one sitting. The timer starts when you press Start and the section ends automatically after 40 minutes.
  3. Aim for about 10 minutes per passage: roughly 3–4 minutes to read and map it, then about 6 minutes for its 9 questions.
  4. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question. If you are stuck, eliminate what you can, guess, mark it and move on.
  5. In the real test the section is timed on its own; when time is up you cannot go back to it. Practise the same way.
  6. The score shown at the end is a practice percentage, not an official ACT scaled score.

After the test
  • Read the explanation for EVERY question, including the ones you got right; check that you chose the answer for the right reason.
  • Write your wrong answers in three columns: Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas. The longest column is your weak skill.
  • For each wrong answer, name the trap you fell for: too extreme, too narrow, reversed order, true but not in the passage, or a literal word meaning.
  • Go back to the matching lessons: "ACT Reading Strategy: Read Fast, Answer Smart" (timing and passage mapping), "Key Ideas and Details", "Craft and Structure" and "Integration of Knowledge and Ideas" (paired passages and data).
  • If you ran out of time, redo one passage with a 10-minute timer each day this week before trying Practice Test 2.
