American Diploma › ACT English and Reading — Complete Course

Before you start

This is a complete practice version of the ACT English section. It has the same length and timing as the real enhanced ACT English test: 50 questions in 35 minutes. You will read six original essays (four of about 340 words with 10 questions each, and two of about 185 words with 5 questions each). The essays are informational, argumentative and narrative, as on the real test.

PassageTypeQuestions
I. The Smell of SemolinaNarrative1–10
II. Keepers of the LightInformational11–20
III. The Dance of the HoneybeeInformational21–25
IV. Give the Centre Back to PeopleArgumentative26–35
V. Reading with the FingertipsInformational36–40
VI. Not What I ExpectedNarrative41–50
  1. Sit somewhere quiet with nothing else open. Put your phone away.
  2. The timer starts when you press Start and runs for 35 minutes. Do not pause it: real timing is the whole point.
  3. Each question shows the essay with only that question's part underlined and numbered. Questions about the whole paragraph or essay say so in the question; numbers in square brackets mark sentences or points in the essay.
  4. Choice A is often NO CHANGE. It is a real option: choose it when the original is already the best version.
  5. Answer every question — there is no penalty for a wrong answer. If time is nearly up, guess on the rest.
  6. In the real test, once time is called for a section you cannot go back to it, so practise finishing inside the time.
  7. The score at the end is a practice percentage of correct answers, not an official ACT scale score (1–36).
Timing guide
  • About 40 seconds per question: roughly 7 minutes for each long essay and 3–4 minutes for each short one.
  • Check the clock after Passage III (question 25): you should have about 17 minutes left.
  • Answer as you read. Read to the end of the sentence that contains the underline before choosing.

The test

After the test
  • Read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right — a lucky guess is not a skill yet.
  • Write a list of the questions you missed and the skill tag of each one: Production of Writing, Knowledge of Language, or Conventions of Standard English.
  • Look for patterns. Missed commas, semicolons, its/it's or verbs? Go back to "ACT Punctuation" and "Sentence Structure", plus "ACT Grammar and Usage".
  • Missed add/delete, writer's-goal or transition questions? Review "Relevance: Add, Delete and Writer's Goal" and "Organisation: Order and Transitions".
  • Missed questions about wordiness, tone or the precise word? Review "Concision and Redundancy" and "Word Choice and Tone".
  • Ran out of time? Reread "How to Attack ACT English" and practise answering as you read.
  • Wait a few days, then take ACT English — Practice Test 1 (or retake this one) under the same timed conditions.
