American Diploma › EST I Literacy — Complete Guide
Before you start
This is a complete practice version of the two English parts of EST I: Literacy Test 1 (Writing and Language) and Literacy Test 2 (Reading). Every passage and question was written for this site by Mohamed Abdelkriem. The test is modelled on the skills that the EST Literacy tests measure; it is not made of official EST questions, and the real test may present questions in a different way.
| Section | Questions | Time | What you do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Literacy Test 1 (Writing and Language) | 44 multiple-choice | 35 minutes | Four essays with numbered, underlined parts. Fix grammar and punctuation, and improve transitions, order, wording and relevance. |
| Literacy Test 2 (Reading) | 52 multiple-choice | 65 minutes | Five long passages (fiction, history, science with a table, a pair of opinion texts, humanities). Answer questions about ideas, details, words, structure, evidence and data. |
These figures are as published by schools; check the latest official EST candidate guide on est.moe.gov.eg before your test.
- Sit in a quiet place with no phone, no dictionary and no help, exactly as in the real test.
- Do the two sections in one sitting if you can. The timer starts when you begin each section and the section ends when the time is up.
- Work through the questions in order. You can mark a question and come back to it while the section is still open, but once a section ends you cannot return to it, just as in the real test.
- Answer every question. A blank is always wrong; a careful guess may be right.
- Each passage is repeated above each of its questions. In Literacy Test 1, only the part that question asks about is underlined and numbered. In Literacy Test 2, the paragraphs are numbered [1], [2], [3] so that questions can point to them.
- At the end you see a practice percentage for each section. It is not an official EST scaled score; use it to measure your progress from one practice test to the next.
- Read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right; a lucky guess is not a skill yet.
- Write down the skill tag of every question you missed (for example Punctuation, Transitions, Inference or Data and graphics) and count which tags appear most often. Those are your weak skills.
- For Literacy Test 1 mistakes, go back to "EST Literacy Test 1: Writing and Language" and open the lesson for each weak skill from its table "Where each skill is fully taught on this site" (for example Sentence Boundaries, Commas and Extra Information, Transitions, Concision and Redundancy, Relevance: Add, Delete and Writer's Goal, Organisation: Order and Transitions, Word Choice and Tone).
- For Literacy Test 2 mistakes, go back to "EST Literacy Test 2: Reading" and its lesson table (for example Central Ideas and Details, Inferences, Words in Context, Text Structure and Purpose, Command of Evidence: Textual, Command of Evidence: Quantitative, Cross-Text Connections).
- If you ran out of time, reread the pacing plans on the two guide pages and "The EST Explained", then retake this test with the timer on, or try a Digital SAT or ACT practice test on this site for extra timed practice.
