The EST Explained
What the Egyptian Scholastic Test is, how EST I and EST II are organised, how it compares with the SAT and ACT, how to choose, and a 6-week study plan.
American Diploma › EST I Literacy — Complete Guide
The EST (Egyptian Scholastic Test) is one of the tests American Diploma students in Egypt can take for university admission. This page explains what the test is, how its parts are organised, how it compares with the SAT and the ACT, how to decide which test to take, and how to prepare for the English parts in six weeks using the free lessons on this site.
What is the EST?
- The EST is run by Egypt's Ministry of Education. Its official website is est.moe.gov.eg.
- It was launched in 2020 together with Pearson, and the Ministry certifies the results.
- It is computer-based: you read the questions and choose your answers on a screen.
- It is used as an alternative to the SAT and the ACT for American Diploma students in Egypt.
الـ EST هو "الاختبار المصري للقدرات الدراسية"، وبتنظمه وزارة التربية والتعليم. طالب الدبلومة الأمريكية في مصر ممكن ياخده بديل عن الـ SAT أو الـ ACT. الامتحان بيتعمل على الكمبيوتر، والموقع الرسمي هو est.moe.gov.eg — ارجعوا له دايمًا قبل أي حجز أو قرار.
Who takes the EST?
The EST is taken by American Diploma students in Egypt, usually in the upper grades of high school when they start preparing for university applications. If you study at an American-system school in Egypt, your school counsellor will normally tell you which tests your classmates take and when. Always confirm the details yourself on the official site, because rules and dates can change from year to year.
EST I and EST II
The EST has two levels. EST I is the general test (English literacy and Math). EST II is a set of subject tests. The table shows the structure as published by schools; there is no official specification page for these numbers.
| Part | What it covers | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| EST I — Literacy Test 1 | Writing and Language (grammar, punctuation, style) | 44 multiple choice | 35 minutes |
| EST I — Literacy Test 2 | Reading | 52 multiple choice | 65 minutes |
| EST I — Math | Mathematics | 45 multiple choice + 13 short answer | 90 minutes |
| EST I — Essay (optional) | Writing an essay | 1 essay | 50 minutes |
| EST II — Subject tests | Math 1, Math 2, Biology, Chemistry, Physics | — | 60 minutes each |
These figures are as published by schools; check the latest official EST candidate guide on est.moe.gov.eg before your test.
This guide covers the two Literacy tests — the English parts of EST I. A quick calculation shows how different they feel: Literacy Test 1 gives you 35 minutes for 44 questions (under 50 seconds per question), while Literacy Test 2 gives you 65 minutes for 52 questions (75 seconds per question, including the time to read the passages). Literacy 1 rewards speed with rules you know by heart; Literacy 2 rewards a calm, careful reading method.
What a computer-based test means for you
- Practise reading on a screen. Reading long passages on a screen is tiring if you only ever study from paper. Do at least half of your practice on a laptop or tablet.
- Keep scrap paper habits simple. You cannot underline a printed page, so train yourself to note the main idea of each paragraph in two or three words.
- Watch the clock on screen. Decide your time checkpoints before the test (see the strategy sections on the two Literacy guides) so you never have to do maths under pressure.
- Answer carefully, then move on. A click is fast; a careless click is just as fast. Read all four choices before you click.
- Check the official guide for the on-screen tools and rules on your test day — they are not listed on this page because they are not in the published school information.
How the EST compares with the SAT and the ACT
The three tests are organised differently, but as general guidance (not an official statement) the English parts all test the same core skills: correct grammar and punctuation, clear and concise sentences, logical transitions and organisation, and careful reading for main ideas, details, inferences, vocabulary in context and evidence. That is why the full SAT and ACT lessons on this site are excellent preparation for the EST Literacy tests.
| Test (English parts) | Questions | Time | Average time per question |
|---|---|---|---|
| EST Literacy Test 1 (Writing and Language)* | 44 | 35 min | about 48 seconds |
| EST Literacy Test 2 (Reading)* | 52 | 65 min | 75 seconds |
| Digital SAT Reading and Writing | 54 (two modules of 27) | 64 min (2 × 32) | about 1 minute 11 seconds |
| ACT English | 50 | 35 min | 42 seconds |
| ACT Reading | 36 | 40 min | about 67 seconds |
*EST figures as published by schools. The SAT and ACT figures come from the official test frameworks (College Board and ACT).

SAT, ACT or EST: how to choose
There is no single "best" test. The right test is the one your target universities accept and the one that suits your strengths. Follow these steps:
- Write your list of target universities — in Egypt and abroad.
- Check each university's admission page (or ask its admissions office) to see which tests it accepts for American Diploma students and what it requires. Do not rely on rumours or old social-media posts.
- If a university abroad is on your list, check carefully whether it accepts the EST; if it is not clearly stated, ask the university directly.
- Try a practice test of each format you are considering: the EST practice test on this site, an SAT practice test and an ACT English and Reading test. Note which format felt more comfortable and where you scored better.
- Think about pace. If you read carefully but slowly, a test with more time per reading question may suit you; if you are quick with grammar rules, short-time grammar sections will feel easier.
- Decide with your school counsellor and your parents, then plan your preparation and test dates from the official website of the test you choose.
A 6-week study plan for the Literacy tests
This plan assumes about 45–60 minutes a day, five days a week. Each lesson on this site teaches the rules, shows worked examples and ends with a practice quiz. Do the quiz, then write every mistake in a notebook with the rule that fixes it. Lesson file names are given so you can find each page.

- ساعة تقريبًا في اليوم، خمس أيام في الأسبوع، لمدة ست أسابيع.
- بعد كل درس في اختبار قصير — اسأل ابنك: جبت كام؟ وإيه الغلطة اللي اتعلمت منها؟
- اطلب منه كشكول للأخطاء: كل غلطة جنبها القاعدة الصح.
- في الأسبوع السادس لازم يحل امتحان كامل بالوقت، زي يوم الامتحان بالظبط.
- Trusting old information. Question counts, rules and dates can change. Check the official candidate guide on est.moe.gov.eg before your test.
- Studying only reading or only grammar. EST I has two separate Literacy tests; prepare for both.
- Practising only on paper. The test is computer-based; practise on a screen.
- Choosing a test because a friend chose it. Your universities' requirements decide, not your friends.
- Doing quizzes without reviewing mistakes. The notebook of mistakes is where your score actually improves.
- Literacy 1: under 50 seconds per question — trust the rules, choose, move on.
- Literacy 2: 75 seconds per question including reading — read the passage once with purpose, then answer from the text.
- Never leave a question blank if you can avoid it: eliminate, then choose the best remaining answer.
- Bring the confidence of practice: if you have done a full timed test at home, test day will feel familiar.
Practice
Check what you know about the test format, then try four sample items in the style of the Literacy tests. The quiz is untimed.
- The EST is a computer-based test from Egypt's Ministry of Education (est.moe.gov.eg), an alternative to the SAT/ACT for American Diploma students in Egypt.
- EST I Literacy: Test 1 Writing and Language (44 q / 35 min) and Test 2 Reading (52 q / 65 min), as published by schools — always check the latest official candidate guide.
- The Literacy tests check the same core grammar and reading skills as the SAT and ACT, so the SAT and ACT lessons on this site prepare you fully.
- Choose your test by checking your target universities' requirements.
- Six weeks: grammar → style → reading → timed practice, with a notebook of mistakes.
