Grammar: used to · be used to · get used to (+ -ing)
used to + verb = a past habit that is not true now (I used to smoke).
be used to + -ing / noun = something is normal for me (I'm used to working at night).
get used to + -ing / noun = something is becoming normal for me (I'm getting used to my new diet).
ثلاثة تعبيرات متشابهة في الشكل ومختلفة في المعنى: used to + فعل = «كنت أفعل زمان»، و be used to = «معتاد على»، و get used to = «يتعوّد على». الخطأ الشائع: ✗ I'm used to wake up early. هنا to حرف جر مثل «على»، فيأتي بعدها الفعل بـ -ing أو اسم: ✓ I'm used to waking up early. ولا تقل ✗ I use to go للمضارع؛ قل I usually go.
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| used to + verb | كان يفعل (عادة في الماضي، ليس الآن) | I used to stay up late. (I don't now.) |
| be used to + -ing / noun | معتاد على (شيء طبيعي بالنسبة لي) | I'm used to working at night. She's used to the heat. |
| get used to + -ing / noun | يتعوّد على (يصبح طبيعيًا تدريجيًا) | I'm getting used to my new diet. You'll get used to it. |
✗ I'm used to wake up early. ✓ I'm used to waking up early.
✗ I use to go to the gym every day. ✓ I usually go to the gym every day.

Write & Speak
Example: Two years ago my lifestyle was very unhealthy. I used to stay up until two in the morning watching series, and I used to skip breakfast because I was always late for work. I drank fizzy drinks every day and I didn't use to do any exercise. I put on twelve kilos and I felt tired all the time. After a check-up, my doctor told me that my blood pressure was high. That was a shock, so I decided to change. I cut out fizzy drinks and took up walking. At first it was really hard to get used to going to bed at eleven, and I missed the sugar in my tea. But slowly I got used to it. Now I'm used to waking up early and walking along the Nile for forty minutes before work. I have much more energy and I've lost eight kilos.
