Grammar: Past continuous and past simple · when / while

Past continuous = was / were + verb-ing: a longer action in progress in the past (At eight o'clock I was driving.)

Past simple = a short, finished action (My phone rang.)

Together: I was driving when my phone rang. · While I was driving, my phone rang.

الماضي المستمر يشبه قولنا «كنت باعمل كذا»: حدث طويل كان مستمرًا في الماضي، ثم قطعه حدث قصير بالماضي البسيط. الخطأ الشائع عند المتعلم العربي: استخدام الماضي البسيط للحدثين (I drove when my phone rang)، أو نسيان was / were (I driving ✗). تذكّر: بعد while يأتي غالبًا الحدث الطويل (was / were + ing)، وبعد when يأتي غالبًا الحدث القصير (الماضي البسيط).

PositiveNegativeQuestion
I / He / She was walking.I / He / She wasn't walking.Was she walking?
You / We / They were walking.You / We / They weren't walking.Were they walking?
PatternExample
past continuous + when + past simpleWe were having dinner when the lights went out.
While + past continuous, past simpleWhile I was walking home, I saw an accident.
past simple + past simple (one after the other)I opened the door and went in.

Put a comma after the first part when you start with While or When: While I was cooking, the phone rang.

State verbs are not continuous here either: I knew him (NOT I was knowing him).

Write & Speak

Write & Speak — “A journey I remember”: write 80–100 words about a trip. Say where you went, what happened and how you felt. Use the past continuous and the past simple with when and while. Then tell the story aloud without reading.

Example: Last winter my family and I went to Aswan by train. The journey took twelve hours, but it was fun. On the second day, we were sailing on the Nile when suddenly the boat stopped. The boatman couldn't fix the engine, so we waited for an hour. While we were waiting, a Nubian boy sang songs for us. In the end, another boat came and took us to a Nubian village. We had lunch there and I bought some souvenirs for my friends. It was an amazing experience, and I want to go back next year.
