Before you start
- This is a full end-of-Stage-8 practice test written in the style of Cambridge Lower Secondary tests. It covers the whole Stage 8 curriculum: Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measure, and Statistics and Probability. The Checkpoint test itself is taken at the end of Stage 9; this test prepares you for your Stage 8 end-of-year tests and builds the base for Checkpoint.
- Paper 1: 1 hour, 50 marks, no calculator. Paper 2: 1 hour, 50 marks, calculator allowed. Answer all the questions. The marks for each part are shown, and most parts are worth 1 or 2 marks.
- Equipment: pen, pencil, ruler, protractor, compasses (geometrical instruments), a calculator for Paper 2 only, and tracing paper if you like. Keep squared paper ready for the drawing questions.
- The timer starts when you begin a paper. Sit both papers in one session if you can, with a short break between them, exactly as you would on test day.
- You may write on paper first if you like, then type your final answer. In the real test you show all your working on the paper; marks are given for correct working even when the final answer is wrong.
- How marking works here: typed answers (numbers, short answers and multiple-choice) are checked automatically. For written answers, drawings and explanations, you mark yourself at the end using the mark scheme shown with each question. Be strict: give the mark only if your answer matches the mark scheme.
- Your score is a practice score to help you see your strengths and weaknesses. It is not an official Cambridge result.
The test
- Read the worked solution for every question, including the ones you got right, and check that your method matches. In the real test the working earns marks too.
- Mark your written answers honestly with the mark scheme. If you are not sure whether an answer earns the mark, do not give it.
- Make a list of the questions you lost marks on, and next to each one write the topic tag and what went wrong (a rule you forgot, a careless slip, misreading the question, running out of time).
- Number mistakes: revisit 'Order of Operations and Calculating with Integers', 'Factors, Multiples, Primes, HCF and LCM', 'Fractions: Recurring Decimals, Mixed Numbers and Order of Operations', 'Percentage Increase, Decrease and Absolute Change' and 'Ratio and Proportion'.
- Algebra mistakes: revisit 'Algebraic Expressions: Simplifying, Expanding and Factorising', 'Equations and Inequalities', 'Writing Expressions and Formulae, and Changing the Subject', 'Sequences and the nth Term' and 'Reading and Interpreting Real-life Graphs'.
- Geometry mistakes: revisit 'Angles in Triangles and on Parallel Lines', 'Area of Parallelograms and Trapezia', 'Volume of Prisms and Surface Area', 'Circumference of a Circle, and Miles and Kilometres', '3D Shapes: Euler's Formula and Plans and Elevations' and 'Translation, Reflection, Rotation and Enlargement'.
- Statistics and probability mistakes: revisit 'Averages, Range and Comparing Distributions', 'Data Collection and Sampling' and 'Probability: Complementary and Combined Events'.
- After two weeks of revision, try Practice Test 1 or 2 and compare your scores paper by paper.
