Stage 8 Maths — Practice Test 2

A full end-of-Stage-8 maths test in Checkpoint style: two 1-hour papers of 50 marks (Paper 1 no calculator, Paper 2 calculator) set around a family holiday in Alexandria, a garden design, a school canteen survey, taxi fares, a cycling race and tiling patterns — with full worked solutions and a mark scheme.

Before you start

  • This is an end-of-Stage-8 practice test in the style of Cambridge Lower Secondary maths tests. The Cambridge Checkpoint test itself is taken at the end of Stage 9; this test checks the Stage 8 work that Checkpoint builds on.
  • It has two papers, like the Stage 8 Progression Test: Paper 1 — 1 hour, 50 marks, no calculator. Paper 2 — 1 hour, 50 marks, calculator allowed.
  • Equipment: a pen, a pencil, a ruler, a protractor and compasses (geometrical instruments). Tracing paper is optional. Use a calculator in Paper 2 only.
  • Answer all the questions. The marks for each part are shown with the question. For questions worth 2 or 3 marks, show your working — you can get a mark for a correct method even if the final answer is wrong.
  • Do one paper at a time with the timer on, in a quiet place. Write on paper first if you like — you can print the question paper (PDF) below and type your answers in at the end.
  • How marking works here: typed answers (numbers, short answers and multiple choice) are checked automatically. Written answers (explanations, constructions and working) you mark yourself with the mark scheme shown after you finish — be strict, as a real examiner would be.
  • Your score is a practice score to show you what to revise. It is not an official Cambridge result.

After the test
  • Read the worked solution for every question, including the ones you got right — check that your method was efficient and your working was clear.
  • Make a list of the questions you lost marks on and write down why: a wrong method, a careless slip, a missing unit, or not reading the question (e.g. ‘simplest form’, ‘complete turns’, ‘1 decimal place’).
  • Fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio (Paper 1 Q4–Q10, Paper 2 Q1–Q2): revise Fractions: Recurring Decimals, Mixed Numbers and Order of Operations, Ordering and Calculating with Decimals, Percentage Increase, Decrease and Absolute Change and Multiplying and Dividing by 0.1 and 0.01, and Significant Figures.
  • Integers, powers and roots (P1 Q1, Q2, Q6; P2 Q4c, Q7a–b): revise Order of Operations and Calculating with Integers, Types of Number and Index Laws, Squares, Cubes and Roots (Positive and Negative) and Factors, Multiples, Primes, HCF and LCM.
  • Algebra (P1 Q11–Q14; P2 Q3, Q6f, Q7d): revise Algebraic Expressions: Simplifying, Expanding and Factorising, Writing Expressions and Formulae, and Changing the Subject, Equations and Inequalities, Sequences and the nth Term, Functions and Straight-line Graphs (y = mx + c) and Reading and Interpreting Real-life Graphs.
  • Geometry (P1 Q3, Q15–Q19; P2 Q4a–b, Q6, Q7c, Q8): revise Area of Parallelograms and Trapezia, Volume of Prisms and Surface Area, Circumference of a Circle, and Miles and Kilometres, Angles in Triangles and on Parallel Lines, Constructions with Ruler and Compasses, Quadrilaterals and Regular Polygons, 3D Shapes: Euler's Formula and Plans and Elevations, Bearings and Midpoints and Translation, Reflection, Rotation and Enlargement.
  • Statistics and probability (P1 Q20; P2 Q5, Q9, Q10): revise Data Collection and Sampling, Representing Data, Averages, Range and Comparing Distributions and Probability: Complementary and Combined Events.
  • Wait a week, then try the same questions again without looking at the solutions, or move on to another practice test.
