Before you start

  • This is a full end-of-Stage-8 practice test in the style of the Cambridge Lower Secondary Progression Tests and Checkpoint. The Checkpoint test itself is taken at the end of Stage 9; this test checks your Stage 8 maths and gets you used to the same kind of questions.
  • Paper 1: 1 hour, 50 marks. You are not allowed to use a calculator.
  • Paper 2: 1 hour, 50 marks. You may use a calculator.
  • Equipment: pen, pencil, ruler, protractor, compasses (geometrical instruments) and tracing paper if you want it. A scientific calculator for Paper 2 only.
  • The marks for each part are shown, e.g. [2]. A [2] question usually needs working: show it, because a correct method can earn a mark even if the final answer is wrong.
  • You may write on paper first if you like, then type your answers. For questions that ask you to draw, copy the grid or number line onto paper.
  • Marking: answers you type as a number, a word or a choice are checked automatically. Written answers (explanations, working, drawings) you mark yourself at the end with the mark scheme shown for each question — be strict, like a real examiner.
  • Your score is a practice score, not an official Cambridge result. Use it to find the topics you need to revise.
  • Leave a short break between the papers if you want, but do each paper in one sitting with the timer running.
After the test
  • Write down your score for each paper out of 50, then your total out of 100.
  • Go through every question you lost marks on. Read the full solution and write the correct method on your paper — do not just read it.
  • For written answers, check every point in the mark scheme. If you are not sure you earned a mark, do not give it to yourself.
  • Revise the lessons for the questions you got wrong: Paper 1 Q1–Q5 → 'Order of Operations and Calculating with Integers', 'Types of Number and Index Laws', 'Squares, Cubes and Roots (Positive and Negative)', 'Multiplying and Dividing by 0.1 and 0.01, and Significant Figures'.
  • Fractions, decimals and ratio (P1 Q6–Q11, P2 Q1–Q2) → 'Fractions: Recurring Decimals, Mixed Numbers and Order of Operations', 'Factors, Multiples, Primes, HCF and LCM', 'Ordering and Calculating with Decimals', 'Ratio and Proportion', 'Percentage Increase, Decrease and Absolute Change'.
  • Algebra (P1 Q12–Q17, P2 Q3, Q5(c)–(d), Q6, Q12) → 'Algebraic Expressions: Simplifying, Expanding and Factorising', 'Writing Expressions and Formulae, and Changing the Subject', 'Equations and Inequalities', 'Sequences and the nth Term', 'Functions and Straight-line Graphs (y = mx + c)', 'Reading and Interpreting Real-life Graphs'.
  • Geometry (P1 Q18–Q23, P2 Q4, Q5(a), Q7–Q9) → 'Quadrilaterals and Regular Polygons', 'Area of Parallelograms and Trapezia', 'Angles in Triangles and on Parallel Lines', 'Constructions with Ruler and Compasses', 'Bearings and Midpoints', 'Translation, Reflection, Rotation and Enlargement', 'Circumference of a Circle, and Miles and Kilometres', 'Volume of Prisms and Surface Area', '3D Shapes: Euler's Formula and Plans and Elevations'.
  • Statistics and probability (P1 Q24–Q25, P2 Q10–Q11) → 'Representing Data', 'Averages, Range and Comparing Distributions', 'Data Collection and Sampling', 'Probability: Complementary and Combined Events'.
  • A week later, try Practice Test 2 to see your progress.
