Grammar: Future forms · will, going to, might / may · future time clauses (when, as soon as, until…)

will = a prediction or a decision you make now · going to = a plan, or a prediction you can see now · might / may = it's possible (about 50%).

After when, as soon as, before, after, until and if we use the PRESENT simple, not will.

في العربية نقول «عندما سأصل سأتصل بك»، فيكتب كثير من المتعلمين: ✗ When I will arrive, I'll call you. لكن بعد when / as soon as / before / after / until / if نستخدم المضارع البسيط حتى لو المعنى مستقبل: ✓ When I arrive, I'll call you. وتذكّر: might و may = «ربما / من الممكن»، وبعدهما الفعل في المصدر بدون to.

How sure?PositiveNegative
100%It will definitely rain.It definitely won't rain.
80%It will probably rain.It probably won't rain.
50%It might / may rain.It might not / may not rain.

✗ When I will finish, I'll call you. ✓ When I finish, I'll call you.

probably comes after will but before won't: It will probably rain. It probably won't rain.

Decision now = will (The phone's ringing. — I'll answer it.) · Plan made before = going to (I'm going to buy a solar panel next month.)

Write & Speak

Write & Speak — “Our environment in 2050”: write 120–150 words. Say what will probably happen, what might happen and what you are going to do to help. Use at least two time clauses (when, as soon as, until). Then give your predictions aloud in one minute.

Example: I think the world will be very different in 2050. Summers will probably be longer and hotter, and in Egypt we might have more heatwaves and water problems. Sea levels may rise, so some parts of Alexandria and the Delta might be in danger. I doubt that people will stop using cars, but most cars will probably be electric. Solar energy is likely to become much cheaper, because we have so much sun. I'm going to do small things to help. First, I'm going to stop buying bottled water and carry my own bottle. When I go shopping, I'll take a cloth bag. I'll switch off the lights and the air conditioner as soon as I leave a room. Things won't change until everyone helps, but I believe that small changes can make a big difference.
