Grammar: Future forms · going to · present continuous for arrangements · will for predictions
be going to + verb = a plan or intention (I'm going to learn to drive.) / a prediction from what you can see now (Look! It's going to rain.)
Present continuous = a fixed arrangement with a time and a place (I'm meeting Omar at six.)
will + verb = a prediction or opinion (I think it will be hot.) / a quick decision (I'll call him now.)
العربي يستخدم «سـ / سوف / هـ» لكل أنواع المستقبل، فيستخدم will في كل شيء: I will meet Omar tomorrow at six (والأفضل: I'm meeting Omar…). الترتيب المتفق عليه مع شخص آخر في وقت ومكان محددين = المضارع المستمر، والخطة أو النية = going to، والتوقع أو الرأي أو القرار اللحظي = will. ولا تقل I will going ولا I'm going to going.
| Form | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| be going to + verb | plan / intention | We're going to paint the flat. |
| be going to + verb | prediction from what you see | Be careful! You're going to fall. |
| present continuous | arrangement (time + place fixed) | I'm flying to Aswan on Monday. |
| will + verb | prediction / opinion (I think …) | I think it will be a great party. |
| will + verb | decision at the moment of speaking | It's cold. I'll close the window. |
Say I don't think … will (NOT I think … won't): I don't think he'll come.
With go and come we usually use the present continuous, not going to go / going to come: I'm going to Luxor tomorrow. · Are you coming to the party?
